The kom'giet are a noble species of moderate consciousness and evolution. While their mental and psychological development is similar to that of a species called 'human' on 'Earth,' their lack of fully operating thumbs or an upright posture have led to a much slower development of civilization.

There are many aspects of kom'giet life which are outlined in the following posts. They are a species of both simplicity and great complexity.

While kom'giet as a whole do not hold much of an organized relegion, they do commonly hold a similar belief and many many stories.

Long ago there was only darkness. After a time, the darkness grew lonely, and weak. Tiny points of light broke through the veil, becoming stars----which burned so very bright.

It was from these celestial furnaces which came the first of we now call life. It came in many wondrous forms. Most acknowledge deep within the very fiber of their being that surely they must not be alone in the universe---for what a great and awesome universe it is! The assortment of life which much be spread across the heavens beyond one's wildest dreams and imagination.

One of these stars created the planet known as Serenity. Some legends claim that it was a star herself who dreamed it all in to existence. Other legends claim that she came to the planet, and that through a faint whisper, no more than a breath, all life came into being.

You are encouraged to think up stories to add to the archive, as we... would like to start an archive. They should be on good terms with the world's lore as a whole, so pm'ing a rough idea to theflyingkitty is always a good plan before starting.

The Tale of the Old Ones
by TFK

The old male shook is shaggy head. Several small insects had taken to living within his fur, and he was not please. He would have to remind himself later to visit the witch up on the hill for a remedy. Well, she wasn't really a witch, but the locals seemed to think so. His eyes glazed over not at the sight og the crackling fire before him, but a thought of her beautiful...

"Torda!" His name. With several blinks the male looked around to see where the sound had came. Indeed, it was Fargus, bouncing up and down beside him.

"Patience, little one." Torda said soothingly. his eyes showed a smile. The young male was always so impatient. He was also talented with the spark, and was responsible for the small camp fire before them. One day, the older one thought, Fargus might end up burning the whole forest down.

He cleared his throat. "Long ago there was nothing in our world but dust and the stars above. A barren place devoid of life and beauty. No kips to play in the stream." Torda offered a small chuckle, his eyes still smiling. "There was even no stream."

Long ago the world was empty and sad. In it's solace it would cry out to the heavens for company. Again and again there was no reply, for the stars in the heavens are great and vast, and had other things to do. It was a single planet with a single moon, resting in what it thought was a singular universe. So lonely it was.

One day a new moon appeared. Our world cried to it, but it's tears only made rain which damped the dust of it' surface. With each passing around it's sun the world cried and cried out again. The second moon never answered.

As time passed, the world stopped trying. It began to drift and become silent. It was a good time after this the Old Ones came. You see, they were so far away that it was hard to hear the small planet. It was they who came in the light of the third moon. They are the ones who woke our world up. It was Serenity who brought our world forth with a whisper. And after all their hard work they joined with the world, taking slumber in the Great Mountain.

You see, that is why the mountain is so sacred, and you should never tread. The world is always listening, waiting for the right time. Do you like being disturbed in your sleep? I think not.

The fire crackled. Young eyes sparkled brightly, widened, as they looked up at him. As a breeze passed through the small camp, Torda looked up at the stars...

Everyone has to eat, you know? In this section we will review everything food. This includes what to eat, where to get it, how to prepare it, what we use it for, and many other questions. If you have any of your own, please don't hesitate to ask HERE.

Kom'Giet are omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and plant matter --- just like we do. They also eat many similar foods, though appearances and such would still remain alien in nature.

Meats*, Nuts, Squash, Berries, Tree Fruit, the inner lining of tree bark, roots, tubers, and more.

*It should be noted that some groups and individuals within kom'giet society refrain from eating meat, getting their proteins instead from grains and nuts.

This is a good time to remind folks that not every kom'giet knows how to start a fire. In fact, the majority of them lack this ability. If food is to be prepared for eating, it is usually a mash of raw ingredients.

It should also be known that most of the kom'giets diet is eaten raw and plan, with no preparation required. There are reasons, however, which are listed below.

Reason #1 - Toxins
Some plant leaves, tubers, or other foods may contain strong acids, bases, or toxins which can be extremly harmful unless neutralized. In this case, the food would be mashed up and mixed with something special or soaked in water containing a special element in order to be safe to eat. An example would be soaking leaves in a bowl of Tufla herb water to draw out the bad stuff, making the leaves quite delicious and safe.

Reason #2 - Flavor
Some foods can be enhanced with a general application of wrapping them in something else.

Reason #3 - Needs Heat
A very few foods are not safe to eat until cooked with fire. These do not include red meat at all, more more certain plant and ocean species. The fire-bearer of the group is usually the only one who knows how to safely prepare these, knowlage handed down the line through those of the position.

Reason #4 - Ceremony
There are various compounds, glues, creams, medicines, and many other things that can be created for ceremonial value. Generally, someone designated in the group holds this knowlage and passes it on to a successor.

As said before, that while the plant and animal life of the valley provides a diet similar to our own, nothing is the same. When writing RP's, you are encouraged to make up names for things, basing them off of things you already know. For example, a Papua fruit may be similar to an apple, but perhaps a rusty orange color with a longer, lumpier shape. It would still grow from a gnobby old tree during summer months, and probably have a similar flavor description.

If you fail or are unable to make up such things, it is up to the reader to acknowledge that the "apple" you write is most likely only something similar, but still vastly different in some way.

The valley is very large, covering an area roughly 1/3 the size of the United States. Natural obstacles on all sides keep it fairly isolated from the rest of the world.

There are currently four great nations taking up residence in the valley. Nearly all kom'giet belong to one or another, even if they don't know it. Rogues are often tolerated on the borders of territories, but not to stay for long without belonging.

The Torbu are a strong, family-oriented, group located in the southern mountain range just east of the coast line, and not extending past the great rift. Their southern most border fades into the high altitudes of the mountains themselves, while their northern range extends just beyond the tree line at the valley floor. They endure harsher winters by holding out in deep caves located in the mountain side.

They are often the easiest for most beginners to play. Personalities are often oriented to honor, family, strength, and perseverance. Other things to note about this group is a stronger genetic pull to large knobby horns, thicker fur, and the realms of Earth and Stone within the Mag'Ud circles of discipline (See Mag'Ud)

This group has few qualms with anyone, but does not allow outsiders to reside in their territory for long. The only exception to this rule being the Ca'saan.

And on further note, it is from the Torbu that the current leader of all nations is derived. However, this political power rarely comes into play.

The Lu'Befri are the only nation developed almost purely be genetic difference. This being that 95% of them have bird-like wings which allow them to glide, and to fly on stronger currants. They're bones are hollow allowing for a lighter weight. Their diet is also mainly fish, kelp, and other sea things

Territory for this group extends only along the coast from the southern mountains to the top, and several smile islands out in the bay. They allow visitors to come enjoy the beaches, as long as they don't take up any long-term residence.

This is a very laid back group, and very easy to play. They tend to belong to the Mag'Ud discipline of Water. Breedings taking place between two Lu'Befri members (Either both winged or one not) have an extremely higher chance that all offspring will have wings, compared to a winged pairing elsewhere.

It should be noted that the young of the lu'befri are often born in the small caves covering the cliff face. Those who are unable to fly are taken, once weened, to a small settlement at the top of the cliff to be raised by the community. Once old enough, they may choose to leave the Lu'Befri to join the Torbu or another clan of their choosing.

This is a female dominated group which exists in the southern mountains from the Great Rift to the west to the Great Lake to the east. The area is mostly sandy and rocky, with much volcanic activity closer to the mountains. In this society, a female is allowed to keep only one male per litter. Extras are to be expelled at a young age from the territory by right of abandonment or death. For this reason, many male kips are discovered in the Torbu's western border, just on their side of the rift.

Males who remain within the Ramus clan are generally kept as breeders. They will align themselves to one female, a pair of females, or a group of them. In this respect, it is almost like a marriage. In this, he will be in the chosen female's care. If another female should like to use him for children, she would have to ask she who owns him. Male roles in Ramus society, outside of sex/breeding, often include caring for the young and guarding the home.

This is a harder to role-play choice, but offers many wonderful and deep opportunities. Kept males are often more passive and gentle, with females being stronger in will and spirit. Mag'Ud influences tend 'tward Fire and Earth. Males who are able to join the Mag'Ud are often given more rank in society, and allowed to leave and return as they please.

Outsiders are generally not welcome anywhere within the territory.

There is little known about the inner workings of this group, though there seems to be some ranking system within it. Their only true territory exists around a small like high in the northern mountains near the Great Mountain itself. They are the only clan, by right of tradition, allowed into ANY territory. Only the most sacred places of any nation may be bared from Ca'Saan passing.

They vary in nature, though are not allowed to cause true violence of any kind. They are not allowed to side with any other group in case of war, choosing by tradition to retreat to their home territory until it is over.

Members of this group are often found staying with various family units offering services for shelter and/or food. This may include story telling, babysitting, crafting/mending, and other such things.

Males of this group who travel into Ramus territory are treated as a sexless being for all social standing. They have neither the power of females, or the right to be owned like Ramus males. It is allowed for a Ca'Saan male to breed with a Ramus female, though this is frowned upon by Ramus society due to strength of genetic quality.

Due to their travels, Ca'Saan hold no higher probability twards any element if they become Mag'ud.

Calendar

Kom'giet have a rough idea of the passage of time. While they have no words for specific days, they do have names for each month. Months have no set number of days. They begin on each new moon.

January: Month of Icicles
February: Month of Awakening
March: Month of Brisk
April: Month of Showers
May: Month of Newness
June: Month of Blue Skies
July: Month of Fireflies
August: Month of Heat
September: Month of Grain
October: Month of Hoarding
November: Month of Storms
December: Month of Night

As well as the four primary seasons, four subseasons have made their way into the kom'giet lexicon. They are the few intermediate weeks between the seasons proper, and go as follows:

Snowmelt
Spring
Deepening (so named for the deepening of the green color of the leaves)
Summer
Leafchange
Autumn (or Leafdown)
Chillwinds
Winter

Generally only poets and agriculturalists worry much about the intermediate seasons.

The kom'giet are not in the habit of naming or numbering their years. Historians will refer to epochs based on what's been happening in recent memory (the current epoch is Epoch of Tempests), but these are mostly unofficial.
