A lot of my friends that play Persona are gay, and a lot are girls. So I'm wondering something. Since the game appeals to both men and women, gays and straights, and since gay men are so popular among teenage girls in Japan either way, shouldn't there be options to date male characters? Or at least choose your characters gender?
Megami Tensei has always had main characters that reflect the personality of the player, and social links never affect the story directly unless they advance automatically, so I think this would an innovative, yet simple way to reach out to a broader audience, and reassure some people who are already fans. What do you think?

No comment. It never bothered me the slightest bit. If we are forced to play as a girl, I'd still play either way so long as the game has stellar content as usual. Never much of an annoyance, really.

Well, I wouldn't mind a character who's a girl either, but I'm referring more to being able to choose the gender and maybe a few other things about your character. Making the MC more customizable prior to the game beginning would immerse the player more.
As for the sexual orientation choice, I think they should try to appeal to homosexual audiences as well, since the Megami Tensei series has an avid fanbase of gays and lesbians, especially in contrast with other games.

Well, that'd make the game leaning towards the Dating Sim genre and Atlus will be dumped with work of making various versions of the game script to coordinate with the main character.

During the day, the gameplay is that of a dating sim. It doesn't affect the main story directly, and almost acts as a 2nd game. As for making more versions of scripts and all that, you are right on that point, but it's only a thought. My friend bought it up while he was playing P3 the other day, so I wanted more input on it *shrug*

It be a lot of stuff adding into the game. They might have to add a lot of alternate things depending on the gender you choose. Well, doesnt matter to me, this has been debated before, but it mostly comes down to the other character's personality or sexual preference.
You cannot force a straight guy to like a gay guy, or a gay guy to like a girl, etc. etc.
I just think they should add some gay characters, and you can choose whether to have a romantic S. Link with them. Also the complications i can see with persona 3, the "she might get upset if you go out with another girl". THey would have to fix it to make a response so it would be less awkward, cause if it is, "She might get upset if you go out with someone else" then its almost like limiting you to 1 S. Link
Its possible choice, but its just a lot of stuff to add onto a CD, and most likely they cannot fit it all on 1 CD.

None of your girlfriends will be upset if you hang out with another girl. Seriously.

Link and maxing it, instead of trying to waste a day at a shrine to mend the relationship.

So, uh, yeah, more liberty. If you initiate the Normal or True Endings with more than one girlfriend, they'll meet up at the train station to send *spoilerS* MC *spoilers end* off ... and, uh, you can guess what happened ...

Um...I sort of agree that, I'd kill if there was a way to choose the gender or something that lets you change your character sexuality....(ex. straight or bi)...I'd have played it a long time ago... sweatdrop XD
Any way It would be more fun to have a bit more freedom when it comes to the social links and who I wanted to date in the game..
Like for one...there were a lot of people I'd have wanted to date..(like Akihiko *drool*)....and never got the chance...T_____T......
oh well...maybe next time..

Well, now that I have thought about it more, I dwell more on the idea of gender choice. Since marketing is first priority, and only 10% of the world's population is gay (supposedly). Whereas women make up close to, if not, half of the population.

The Protagonist being male, I don't think is much of a problem. Usually, I'd prefer to have female characters (I like all-female teams), but playing the Protagonist did not bother me any bit. And I guess something that might be useful, the Protagonist appears very wimpish; Slender with emo hair and even a slightly girly mannerism. He makes for several yaoi doujins (I'm not kidding).
As for orientation, I suppose P3 was kinda limited, but I'm not going to make a big deal out of "OMG I can only date girls???" (Bebe's social link didn't really count as a date). I had a lot of fun seeing how the different girls react, it was fun. And as far as I've heard, you can be homosexual in P4 (anticipating..... anticipating......)

I think Akihikos gay for Shinji... if that counts as something...(Im not really being serious.) Im not sure if its credible or not, but in the first Persona Atlus had to edit the game because of hints of sexuality between the main charecter and A male friend. And their remaking Persona 1 for the PSP. I hope its true cause im totally buying it!
