This RP is taking place a long time ago so please make sure your character is old enough to participate before jumping in. Thank you.

Curse had been perusing his prey for weeks now. It was a young dragon in his opinion, a demonic probably only a few years past reaching adulthood. The elder dragon was using one of his favorite strategies: a relentless pursuit. Once the poor beast was tired enough it could no longer flee then it would be weak enough to be easily taken down without much protest.

The sun was beginning to rise as the smaller dragon was beginning to have difficulty flying. The younger dragon's wings faltered and it made a clumsy descent. Upon landing it had taken down a few trees and numerous branches. Seeing the moment of weakness Curse dived forward tearing into his target. He no longer remembered why he had been after this dragon only that it was no longer alive. The elder happily began feeding on the fresh corpse oblivious to any disruption he had caused to the surrounding area.

When dawn appeared, Aeterna awoke.

The sun rose as if it were a duty to awaken the sleeping dragon. It was a daily annoyance, however, whenever the Archangel sought to sleep in until the afternoon. She shook her head with a soft murr, the noise churning forth from her throat without pause. Aeterna found herself clutching a pointed rock against her throat, pressing into the velvet soft skin.

She tossed it away lazily, one paw rising to rub against the sore flesh where it had lay. It was a price to pay a safe place to stay, she supposed. Perhaps, it was a premonition, an omen of what the day was going to be like that day. The Archangel rose, slithering out from her sleeping place, and stretched felinely with wings rising to flex against the brightening sky. They folded neatly against her back and shook away the loose feathers there may have been within the pair.

She heard rather than saw the act, first. It was a disorienting noise of slaughter drifting lazily against her ears. Her first instinct was to flee, but she was an adult now with various years under her belt despite her looks and eternal youthfulness. Aeterna was also tired of the senseless fighting of one species against the other. Her constant wandering was an attempt to throw off any dragons wishing her to join in their cause, or to take her life.

The dark dragon threw herself off her current perch, wings opening to flap lazily until she hung steadily in the air.

A soft breeze lulled her senses, but she took it as a sign to move.

Aeterna flew towards the noisy eater and landed gracefully, pressing a claw gently against the fallen trees as she padded towards Curse. Her wings folded again, pressing gently against her back. It was not difficult to recognize the other, who remained more or less the same, except older and larger. She had an excellent memory, even back to her hatching, which was why she even remembered him in the first place.

“Your eating manners are atrocious. Are all your species so messy in their habits?” she remarked patiently. “Then again, I seem to recall your manners are just as horrible as they were years ago when I hatched.”

Curse harrumphed while still tearing into his fresh kill. "I have seen some that ate quite daintily... However I have found this messiness can be helpful. The remaining scent of blood and decay has always aided in me finding my next meal." The large male casually glanced to his side to see who had interrupted his meal. It was a young looking dark angelic female. Could she tell he had no intent to attack her?

"Your scent is familiar..." He strained to recall why and when he had seen this young dragon but it was no use. It seemed scent was the only sense that had not began to betray him.

The mention of hatching only helped clarify the youth must have been one of the numerous eggs he had disturbed. It was a habit that had manifested much later in his life so there was little reason to be concerned of the possible threat of one so young. This belief was reflected in his body language. He was very at ease even without knowing why the other dragon had approached him.

The angelic dragon shook her head gently with a soft scoff. Her socialization skills weren’t the best, considering the lack of interaction with other dragons. Curse would be the first one Aeterna had decided to seek out within the last few moon cycles. It probably wasn’t exactly the best choice, considering she merely interrupting the elder dragon’s meal.

Her silver eyes narrowed in distaste, flickering briefly between Curse and the deceased dragon, who the older dragon was making a meal of now. She didn’t have any false beliefs that this was the first kill of the same species. After his casual comment of the messiness, Aeterna cocked her head at him, sucking a soft breath.

”What, you intend to stay long enough to draw in your next prey?” She clucked her tongue against the roof of her maw, shaking her head with disbelief. The angelic dragon intended to bury the now dead dragon after Curse finished eating, but she didn’t want to if Curse intended to make the land a death ground.

“I hope I would be familiar,” Aeterna said, almost sourly. “I’d hate to think of all the other dragon eggs you snatched and abandoned in some obscure or dangerous setting.” She flicked her tail with mild annoyance, but suppressed her thinning temper. The dark dragon didn’t intend to fight Curse, especially with the high probability that she would lose no matter how powerful her magic. There was a rather unsettling feeling in attacking the person one first laid their eyes on when hatched, anyway.

That question had not occurred to him. He scanned the area paying particular interest in the damaged plants and shook his head. "No, this body is not viable for that purpose. I have no lairs nearby and the plant growth here is far too dense to drag a carcass without causing undue harm to the area." Curse shrugged. He barely had enough energy to fly no less carry the remains of another adult with him.

The tone the other dragon was using had him concerned. Had he done something wrong? Been rude? That last thought had left him somewhat amused. "Unlike other prey demon meat is tougher and tainted with an acidic taste... I doubt you would want any?" He let the offer stand and continued eating. Curse was not one to be possessive about food, he could always go find more..

There were too many variables around them. It was not possible for Curse to pinpoint what had the other so aggravated. "It is unwise to envy those who were not simply abandoned... The few I have stayed with have grown to become damaged at best. With the eggs I find it is not a very tangible feeling... I sense something wrong and alleviate the problem... That is all." As Curse spoke about this he began unconsciously clawing at the rune on one of his arms. When he was able to remember things the weight of those marks became more acute.

User ImageThe offer was rather nice of Curse, but Aeterna found eating other dragons cannibalistic and sickening at best. There weren’t much prey as large as another dragon, but Aeterna would rather take on smaller prey until she had her fill. Even then, the dragon disliked killing without a need. Aeterna only killed when her survival was at stake, like when others hunted her and for food. Too bad, she couldn’t say the same for many others.

She shook her head, feeling only somewhat thrilled that Curse was not staying in the land. It would be easier to bury the corpse then, later, when she felt like it. It was a hope that it wouldn’t be too long or other carnivores would seek out the scent of blood. Tilting her head towards the elder dragon, Aeterna studied him warily.

There was still a suitable distance between them. Aeterna didn’t trust him to be much closer. Wasn’t it rather silly? The first dragon she had ever seen, who should have been her parent, was someone she couldn’t trust. Aeterna truly hoped that the other eggs that Curse had stolen turned out all right, despite everything.

Her tail flicked in her faint agitation, and she consciously stilled it to prevent any more disturbances in her calm disposition.

At his words, Aeterna released a soft murr. There were some truth to his words, but she wanted very much to question his train of thought. “I don’t envy any of those you somehow raised,” Aeterna muttered slowly, but she still remembered the striking sense of abandonment when it occurred to her that Curse wasn’t going to return as a newborn hatchling. However, if Curse had raised her, she would probably have been a twisted creature. She was grateful for the latter, but still bitter about the former.

“Wrong?” Aeterna stared at him. She tensed when she unconsciously stepped forward. “You’re a… an elder Nightmare. Why would you care what happens to the eggs? What was wrong with my family?” The last question slipped out unintentionally. She gritted her teeth and flinched, but allowed the question to linger.

He smirked. "Even Nightmares have standards of right and wrong we simply have different definitions of the concepts. I personally have a strict code I follow. However many of my kind would also find my actions distasteful... As for your family or how I found you... I can't recall." Curse glowered at the fallen dragon at his feet. His voice tinged with not regret but frustration. "I can't even remember what this fool had done to earn his fate."

Curse had lost interest in his feeding. He slowly approached the angelic trying to get a better look at her. "A family provides as much bias as boon. Without this a dragon can attain a purer form. Without the restraint of these variables the young are able to follow their true natures. It was not too long ago that it was taboo for a dragon to be of an alignment unfitting of its species." He stopped advancing a safe distance away. The other dragon was being relatively civil so there was no reason to be aggressive or actively try to agitate her further.

"I don't like seeing things controlled, young one. Entropy is an aspect of nature. I can feel the auras of some things tugging at me and can not avoid acting on it... If things are cast into the chaos they will naturally find their destined places or are too weak to survive."

User ImageAeterna had held her turmoil against herself like a silently festering wound. Although she had not thought much about ‘family’ over the years, not unless the female dragon thought of Curse, she had still trapped the topic within her for a long time. She couldn’t easily allow the topic to fade from her mind, but it was. The angelic dragon had already predicted the answer Curse gave her; it just never seemed entirely real until the dragon had told her. Traveling, even if she sought the opposite, brought different kinds of dragons to her. There were some not unlike Curse in his concepts. Aeterna had made up hundred of excuses and explanations as to why Curse did what he did.

As for the answer to her last, unexpected question, feelings of disappointment flickered, but faded with the turmoil. She understood, somehow, that there was no way someone who snatched eggs constantly would remember one egg in particular. So, what if she somehow managed to begin hatching the moment he had her egg tucked somewhere dangerous or some other?

She tensed slightly as Curse suddenly began to approach. Aeterna was fine as long as Curse remained a fair distance away from her. The angelic dragon couldn’t predict what could happen when the elder dragon was involved, after all- with his sense of ‘ethics’.

“How righteous of you,” Aeterna said quietly, not happy but accepting nonetheless. “Yet… You don’t care about the families you left behind with empty nests. Some of them would have been good parents.” Her tone for the last lines weren’t accusing. She stated them as simply as she said the sky was blue.

The angelic dragon went right up to him then, somehow unafraid of him despite the blood on his maw from tearing apart another dragon. “I don’t understand, however. What kind of feeling do you get that gives you the right to play God?”

((sorry for being less descriptive than I would like. Not much time for this one but I really wanted to get it up before going to work))

"To kill is to feel loss. To feel any more is to have an unhealthy relationship with death." Since they were closer it was more apparent that the elder's breathing was somewhat ragged. The long flight had been catching up with him.

"If I don't act on it the pulling becomes stronger until if feels as if it is tearing me apart... Ignore it long enough and I'll black out. Then what the pulling was leading to will happen anyways... I would expect to feel as a god I would need to feel more control over myself... Yet one feeling godly over meaningless bloodshed is pathetic..." Curse barely understood what it was that had began swaying his actions as of late. He was having difficulty in expressing it in words.

"Child, what is your name?"

She glanced briefly at the corpse, which had begun to attract insects now. If she peered close enough, there would probably be ants crawling through the dragon’s form. Aeterna sighed inwardly, pitying both the dragon and the killer. The dark angelic returned her gaze upon Curse, maw clamped shut as he spoke. Her respect and knowledge that he was wiser kept her silent.

“My name is Aeterna, for eternal.” Aeterna replied dutifully when asked. She tilted her head at him, not exactly thrilled that he seemed exhausted. The angelic dragon could imagine the long flight it had taken to tire the elder out, chasing after prey. Her tail flicked nervously once and stilled to become motionless. “You may be haunted,” she remarked quietly, a flicker of amusement passing her eyes as she spoke.

“I do hope that eternal youth gives me the chance of missing that aspect of an elder’s unfortunate life.”

She refrained from remarking on his state of tire, but figured that he wouldn’t be flying far. Aeterna would have offered him a place to rest at the alcove she had been sleeping at earlier, but she still didn’t know what to make of him.

Was he playing with her? Was he cruel? Was he acting out of some higher decision not of his will?

The elder watched her intently. "The name is fitting." He had been incredibly good with keeping track of information in his more youthful days. When a scent had a particular name attached he was much better at retaining the memory of an individual. "I am known as Curse."

Curses' twin tails lashed back and forth a few times. She kept on looking at the body. It was starting to make him feel uneasy which only reminded him of his growing fatigue. Once he left the remains will probably be disposed of in some manner. If the other dragon had never appeared he would have left the carcass be for the other scavengers to feed upon (while returning occasionally to aid in the task). Once the body was picked clean he would have left as if nothing happened.

"Some age gracefully and some do not. Even though my memory is fading my body still remains resilient." He scanned the area around them trying to remember if he had spotted any landmarks that could make for a temporary lair. There was a stream to the east. At least travel would be easier among it. "I will remain nearby for a few days. My memory might have move clarity once I have had a chance to rest. If you still have questions I should be easy enough to find." The large dragon had no doubt his bulk would have difficulty getting through the forest without leaving a blatant trail.

((Curse is going to try to leave next post so you will have a chance to deal with the body. ))

“Is that so…” She made an uncommitted noise, having already learned his name from countless searches for him when she had been younger. Older now, Aeterna knew better than to search for anyone in particular. The angelic dragon preferred to let the tides flow on their own, interfering only when faced with matters that required it.

Aeterna could sense his unease, almost taste it in fact. She released a soft murr, turning away from his enormous size like a disinterested feline. Her body, much smaller and slimmer than his, was graceful as she padded towards the corpse. The angelic dragon did not bother to disguise her interest in it, but nothing in regards to satisfying any hunger. Lowering her head slightly, she nudged the dead beast as if testing its authenticity.

As he spoke, she craned her head around to look at him. The faint spark of hope bloomed and faded. She forcefully squashed it. What did it matter to him? Curse could easily have forgotten and not bother trying to recall any lost information. It was too strange, especially considering her previous thoughts of him were more than just slight distaste.

She turned back to the corpse now, giving it most of her attention. In part, some of it stayed on Curse, just in case the other dragon decided to turn to her for prey. Aeterna opened her maw, tongue flicking out to taste the liquid red of the dead dragon.

Immediately, both disgust and hunger took over her senses. She gagged silently in response to flood. As she thought, her dislike for cannibalism overrode her taste for flesh. The angelic dragon wouldn't be able to even stomach trying to eat it, if she had agreed to Curse's earlier invitation. Shaking her head somewhat, Aeterna sank back on to her haunches gracefully and debated on how to rid of the large, very dead dragon.

The ribcage of the fallen dragon had been haphazardly ripped open and the body gutted. It seemed the elder had focused on depriving the fool of his organs before dinning on other tissue.

Curse was annoyed with his decision to leave the body and was barely aware of his tails slowly lashing back and forth reflecting this. All remaining flesh was a loss. It didn't matter since he could not eat more without being gorged to a vulerable degree so it was not a huge loss. He was simply missing out on slowly rotting seconds later. The fallen trees were slowly dying. There was still time to take advantage of their potential energy but he disregarded this opportunity. It was unwise to do anything that could be considered strange while he was still fond of the idea of further observing the angelic in a peaceful manner.

The overall waste was a pity but would be tolerated. For now Curse was tired and his attention span had died. As he finally made up his mind to leave Curse glanced back at the angelic as she investigated the body. He snorted disdainfully. "Once dead all a body becomes is meat, nothing more, nothing less." Since Curse could tell she wanted to dispose of the body he felt like he was doing her a favor by handing it over and leaving.

He lumbered away not feeling a need to expend any extra energy on a faster gait. His lashing tails left sporadic small nicks and gashes in the surrounding obstacles as he carefully pushed through the brush trying to keep extensive damage to a minimum. ((His tails never got the memo I suppose.)) After traveling for a short distance Curse began to pick up the scent of water. He lazily followed it. Casually on a downward sweep of his tails Curse subtly aimed 2 of the gashes while keeping the same timing as before. They both landed on an earlier mark so all 3 strokes overlapped. The marks had landed on the base of a moss covered tree. Its sap oozed from the 3 wounds and slowly evaporated away like steam expending a small amount of energy in the process. After a few seconds the steaming ceased and the state of the newly created sigil became dormant. The marks reverted to the state of all the others. Mundane wounds marring a surface.

((Whatever it is, it's inactive now. The sigil will be closer to your current location then where I will be resting))

Aeterna did not feel inclined to use magic to bury the body. However, the corpse was easily several sizes larger than hers. It would take unnecessary energy lifting and rolling the corpse physically, even with missing inner organs thanks to Curse. Casting another lingering glance at the larger dragon as he lumbered off to find a place to rest, Aeterna lifted herself up and padded around the decimated area.

She pressed her claws against the ground heavily, looking for a soft area to begin digging. It was perhaps some hours later, as Aeterna didn’t find the need to hurry, that she finally looked satisfied. With the body buried, Aeterna smelled heavily of earth and blood, similar to the surroundings all around.

She sniffed quietly and shook her head, hauling herself towards the direction where she could easily pull herself up into the air. Water ran nearby and her thoughts moved towards Curse. Tired, he wouldn’t move too far from the river where it would be easy to drink. It was an accurate assumption, given the direction the mild bouts of destruction from Curse’s body moved in one general direction.

Aeterna flew towards it, sweeping herself in graceful arcs in the air and landed with a splash in the water. The water overrode the overwhelming scent of earth. She pressed her head downwards, lapping up the cold spray where she could. Her gaze followed the marks on the trees, only absently noting them in her mind before sweeping out of the water.

Perhaps, she would return in a couple of days.

His annoyance was starting to fade. Curse was sated and knew he could rest soon once an appropriate location was found. The scent of water was growing stronger. Soon he found the stream that had been spotted earlier. Traveling along the stream greatly reduced the degree of the damage he was causing by just being there.

Curse followed the stream until he came across a large clearing. This would work for now. He stretched his tattered wings enjoying the gentle warmth of the morning light. Curse would not let how far he was away from any of his lairs bother him.

He lumbered towards the edge of the clearing and curled up there. The old dragon had very little concern for stealth when not hunting so his choice reflected comfort and not protection. He could easily be spotted snoozing there from overhead. Curse was a light sleeper but prone to hibernating in long bouts.

((technically he is going to forget about this whole "leaving" thing and sleep until something feels a need to wake him up.))
