------------------------------------------------------•°¤§¤°•--------------------------------------------------------

.::This is a list of Naruto and Shinobi terms that you might want to know. Please note that some definitions have been modified to fit the current plot :3 ::.

.::Terms A-G::.

.::A::.

Amaterasu- The sun goddess in the Shinto religion. Its the name of Itachis jutsu activated by his mangekyo sharingan. It creates black flames.

ANBU- Short for Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai, which means: special assassination squad. ANBU members perform special assassination missions and are under the direct command of the Kage. They usually wear animal masks to hide their identity

.::B::.

Bloodline Abilities- A rare trait one is born with which is usually activated either from time of birth or at a young age. Bloodline abilities can take the form of an eye technique such as the Sharigan or Byakugan, or physical body manipulation such as being able to manipulate one's own bone structure. It can also be an ability to manipulate multiple chakra elements at once to create 'new' elements such as Ice, Wood, or Sand. Bloodline abilities are very rare and usually exclusive to a clan, and are only passed down through the generations. They are highly valued by shinobi villages and are carefully guarded secrets

Bunshin- a clone or copy created by a ninja to distract and/or confuse the enemy. Unlike Kage Bunshins (Shadow Clones), regular clones are just illusions and cannot perform physical tasks.

Byakugan- translated as "White Eye", is a bloodline limit ability unique to the Hyuga clan of Konoha. It has a very distinct appearance where the eyes are white colored and pupil-less. It is believed the Sharigan originated from the Byakugan. Unlike the Sharigan, the pupil effect of the Byakugan affects those of the Hyuga clan continuously. The Byakugan is a powerful sight ability which allows the user to detect motion, chakra, even temperature changes, over a radius of hundreds of meters around him. This makes Byakugan users excellent scouts and trackers, as well as expert hand-to-hand combatants. The Byakugan's ability to view the chakra channels in the human body is especially deadly. A skilled user can aim his attacks directly at vital chakra points in the body to completely stunt an opponent's chakra flow, thereby preventing him from performing any jutsus

.::C::.

Chakra- the basic energy used to perform techniques such as ninjutsu or genjutsu. Chakra is formed from a mixture of spiritual and physical energies and be used to power an ability or expelled in a form that can used to attack. The amount of chakra a person has varies but the important point is not how much a person has but how well he can control and manipulate it. Depleted chakra will be recharged after resting, but completely depleting one's chakra reserves will endanger that person's life

Chuunin- A chunin is the second level of shinobi ranking. A genin can advance to the chuunin rank by passing the chuunin exam. Unlike genins, who accomplish missions which are C-Rrank and below, chunins can take on missions from A or B- ranks. They normally have gained an average of 5 justus

.:: D::.

Daimyo- the supreme ruler of one the five great countries (Fire, Earth, Wind, Water, Lightning)

Doton- meaning Earth type or Earth release, the term is used to classify an Earth element based attack or ninjutsu

.::E::.

Ero-Sennin- it means 'perverted hermit' and is the term Naruto uses when referring to Jiraiya

.::F::.

Fuujin- translates as Wind god, one of the gods of the Japanese shinto religion

Fuuton (Futon)- meaning Wind type or Wind release, the term is used to classify a Wind element based attack or ninjutsu

.::G::.

Genin- is the first and lowest rank of shinobi, and signifies that the individual has completed his training from a Ninja Academy. Though sometimes there are certain tasks or tests to be completed before one is allowed to graduate. On average, genin usually have a repertoire of three jutsus. They are normally assigned into a team comprised of three genin and a jonin instructor. Normal genin are only allowed to be given C-Rank or lower level missions

Genjutsu- are illusionary techniques which manipulates the target's senses in order to create illusions. Genjutsu are accomplished by controlling the target's chakra flow, specifically those in his nervous system. In effect, genjutsu uses a person's own chakra against him, but the genjutsu user also consumes his own chakra to maintain the control. Ninja with high intelligence are best suited at using genjutsu and are more resistant to its effects

.::Terms H-P::.

.::H::.

Hand Seals- are specific hand patterns used by ninja as a way to manipulate and combine spiritual and physical energies with chakra nature composition in order to perform jutsus. Officially, there are twelve hand seal patterns, each named after an animal in the Chinese zodiac. Each animal/seal also signifies a specific element, for example the tiger seal = fire, dog = earth, bird = wind, horse = sound. However, there are also some ninja use rare and unusual seals to activate their jutsus; one example is Naruto's seal for activating 'Kage Bunshin no Jutsu.' Hand seals are typically performed using both hands, but specially trained ninja can perform seals with only one hand; Haku was revealed to possess this skill when he fought Sasuke Uchiha. Higher level techniques require more hand seal combinations to activate. The last seal formed in a combo usually denotes the elemental attack type of the jutsu and therefore the chakra type of the user. High level ninja can perform hand seals so fast that the normal eye cannot read each individual seal, but ninja with special abilities such as the Sharingan can decipher them

Hitai-ite- the actual term for the ninja headband / forehead protector

Hokage- translates as 'Fire Shadow'; is the Kage (leader) of the Hidden Village in the Leaf

.::J::.

Jonin (Jounin)- is the third level of shinobi ranking after chunin. Shinobi are only given the Jonin rank if they have gained a wide range of techniques as well as battle experience and knowledge. Also, most Jonin are capable of manipulating at least two different types of chakra elements. Jonin are a ninja village's most dependable shinobi and are given the most dangerous missions. They can take on any missions including those of A and S-Ranks. Jonin can also be given the responsibility of becoming the instructor/team leader of teams of genin or chuunin

Jutsu- translated as "technique", ninja are trained in three primary schools of techniques: ninjutsu, taijutsu and genjutsu

Jyuuken- also known as the Gentle Fist, it a special taijutsu practiced by those of the Hyuuga clan

.::K::.

Kage- translates as "shadow" but is also the title given to the leader of one of the five most powerful shinobi villages. The position is usually given to the most powerful ninja in the village

Kage Bunshin- or Shadow Clone is an advanced form of the regular cloning technique where the clone is actually a duplicate body of the original. However this technique also requires substantial amount of chakra since the orginal shinobi's chakra needs to be evenly split amongst all clones in order to sustain them. A Shadow Clone is released (destroyed) when it receives damage, but all the experience it gained during its existence is returned to the original

Katon- meaning Fire type or Fire release, the term is used to classify a Fire element based attack or ninjutsu

Kekkei Genkai- see Bloodline Abilities

Kirigakure- is the proper name for the Hidden Village in the Mist - the official ninja village for the Land of Water and one of the five great ninja villages. It is sometimes referred to as the Hidden Village in the Bloody Mist due to one of its old traditions of initiating new ninja cadets by forcing trainees to battle each other to the death

Konohagakure- often abbreviated as Konoha, is the proper name for the Hidden Village in the Leaf - the official ninja village for the Land of Fire and one of the five great ninja villages. It is the home of Naruto and all the other Leaf shinobi

Kuchiyose no Jutsu- translates as summoning techniques. By making blood contracts with different creatures beforehand, a shinobi can summon them at anytime and anywhere he wants. It is technically a space-time ninjutsu and usually involves a small amount of blood from the shinobi in order to perform the technique

Kumogakure- is the proper name for the Hidden Village in the Clouds - the official ninja village for the Land of Lightning and one of the five great ninja villages

Kunai- are dagger-sized weapons that are common to almost any ninja's arsenal. Most kunai are made from iron with a sharpened trowel-shaped blade and bandages wrapping the handle to increase the grip. The small loop at the blunt end of the kunai can be utilized in many ways by resourceful ninja such as threading wire through in order to make a trigger trap

Kunoichi- a female ninja

Kyuubi- the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox which had been sealed by Konoha's Fourth Hokage inside Naruto. Kyuubi's physical form is that of a red/orange fox with nine tails

Mangekyo Sharingan- or Kaleidoscope Sharingan, is the ultimate evolution of the Sharingan revealed so far in the series. The eye pupil takes on a different appearance than the regular Sharingan but can vary between users. The new abilities the Mangekyo Sharingan can differ between different users but some of the most dangerous ones are related to the warping of time and space. However, the cost for using the Mangekyo Sharingan is that it gradually deteriorates the user's eyesight

Medical Nin- are ninja who specialize in both the knowledge of the human body and medicines. They practice medical jutsus that can be used to heal allies, but are also effective in combat to damage their enemies. Medical ninjutsu attacks can be especially dangerous as they can cause permanent internal injuries. However, on most teams the medical ninja is not a frontline combatant. During a fight the medical ninja's priority is to avoid damage at all cost because they are considered a key member to their squad. If the medical ninja is injured, then he will not be able to heal himself nor his teammates. Kabuto, Shizune, Tsunade, and Sakura are examples of well known medical ninja in the Naruto series for their medical knowledge and the techniques they use. An important quality that good medical ninja possess is having perfect chakra control

Mizukage- translates as 'Water Shadow'; is the Kage (leader) of the Hidden Village in the Mist

Mokuton- means Wood element techniques. It is a bloodline limit techniques by fusing Earth and Water element chakra together. The user has the ability to grow trees spontaneous and use large pillars of Wood to crush the enemy. The only people known to possess the Mokuton ability are the First Hokage and Yamato

.::N::.

Ninjutsu- are ninja techniques that cover a broad range of attacks and abilities. However, unlike genjustu, ninjutsu are real and cause direct physical effects. Performing ninjutsu requires chakra and are usually (but not always) activated by performing the correct sequence of hand seals. Ninja with large chakra reserves and skilled at performing hand seals are best suited at using ninjutsu

.:: O ::.

Otogakure- is the proper name for the Hidden Village in Sound. It was created and led by Orochimaru and does not officially belong to any country. Orochimaru uses the organization solely for collecting and recruiting subjects for his forbidden jutsu experimentations

.:: P ::.

Puppeteer- is a ninja who specialize in the art of crafting puppets for combat as their weapons. Using chakra strings they can animate their puppets in combat. Their puppets are often equipped with weapons and loaded with traps and poisons. As the skill of a puppeteer ninja increases, so does the number of puppets he can control simultaneously. Puppeteers devote most of their time to creating and fine tuning their puppets, so they are generally weak in hand-to-hand fighting. So far in the Naruto series, puppet jutsu seems to be a technique unique to the Hidden Village in the Sand

This eye technique allows the ninja to use all techniques and manipulate all chakra elements. Pein is the first character seen in the series to use the Rinnegan in combat. Sharigan translates as 'Copy Wheel Eye' and is a special eye ability which grants the user increased perception, the ability to memorize and copy certain abilities, and the ability to use hypnosis (a type of genjutsu). The use of the Sharingan consumes chakra, however the amount varies on the skill level of the user. The Sharigan also can evolve as the user ages or gains experience. So far, the ultimate form of the Sharigan has been the Mangekyo Sharingan, which is highly difficult to obtain but grants the user powerful new abilities. The Sharingan also appears to be transplantable as this was how Kakashi gained his. However, Kakashi's non-Uchiha body is not compatible with his Sharingan eye, so using the ability exhausts him rapidly

.::U::.

Uchiha- at one point the most powerful clan in Konoha and founders of the Konoha Police. Those of the Uchiha clan were famous for their mastery of Fire-based ninjutsu and their exlcusive bloodline limit eye ability, the Sharingan. In another pronounciation, Uchiha can mean paper fan, specifically those used to fan flames. A red and white paper fan is also the symbol for the Uchiha clan. The entire Uchiha clan was nearly wiped out in one night by the actions of Itachi Uchiha. The only other survivor was Itachi's little brother, Sasuke Uchiha, who he had spared
