I've heard a lot about Gelatin. But what is it really made out of? I've heard that it's made out of Cow and Horse hoof, I've heard that it's made out of Chicken fat, I've heard a lot of things. All I know is that it's not Vegetarian and they put it in a lot of stuff. So anyone know what exactally it's made of?
And also, is some one really a vegetarian if they eat it? I know a Vegan definately wouldn't eat it, and I sure don't eat it. But a lot of my "Vegetarian" friends stuff their mouths with Starbursts and Skittles. And I've told them it's not vegetarian too, but they just keep on eating it.

"Cecil" Cowhides are used for gelatin because they contain a semi-nutritious substance called collagen. They don't molder in the open air, but instead are immersed for a month in vats of lime, then dumped in acid, washed in water, and finally cooked. Pig hides get an expedited version of this process, but the result is the same, namely a uniform proteinaceous goo. The gelatin is then filtered, dried, and shipped off for manufacture into Jell-O, marshmallows, candy, and what have you. "The Straight Dope" website says this, and I really hope it's not true, cuz I just lost my appetite.

The most common definition of vegetarianism is not eating meat, and meat is muscle so I don't think gelatin is meat, and if it is most people don't count it as such. So yes, they are vegetarian. What it/they isn't/aren't is vegan- avoiding all animal products, by-products and whathaveyou entirely. That can be a tough job if you buy processed foods, not only are they often hidden away in long ingredient list in the tiniest hard to read print they can probably legally print in, most of them are hard to pronounce and even harder to define. What makes the situation even more difficult is the fact that certain companies like Boca, Silk, and Morning Star are rumored (or perhaps proven, I dunno) to be owned by dairy companies, and that's very discouraging for not-so-rich kids like me.

I've read that Carol Adams (author of living with meat eaters and sexual politics of meat) say that gelatin isn't vegetarian.
For me, gelatin is no different than beef broth or something - it's something made out of an animal.
I dunno - set your own ethical standards. You can eat it, but eventually, if becomming vegan, you'll kick it out. There are lots of candies out there that use no gelatin (like Jolly Ranchers), or use Agar Agar (which is just like gelatin in texture, but made from seaweeed).
Also - koscher gelatin is still made of the hoof.

Witchkatt The most common definition of vegetarianism is not eating meat, and meat is muscle so I don't think gelatin is meat, and if it is most people don't count it as such. So yes, they are vegetarian. under that arguement, one can justify eating chicken broth and bones (like the bone char processing in white sugar or for soup stock). ewwww... those are definatly not vegetarian.

What also concerns me is that treatment of the animals. I mean obviously those animals, whatever they are, are treated badly.

I eat geletin, but I'm really trying to stop. I'm failing miserably, but atleast I'm trying. I have to believe that it still counts as vegetarian if you eat geletin, as I've been a vegetarian all my life and I'm not about to change that. If it's made out of cow hides, as that website says, then it's as vegetarian as leather, which I'm also trying to eliminate. sweatdrop

I was trying to work at whether or not it kills the animal to get it. And I suppose it does. I looked up "vegetarian" at dictionary.com and came up with many results. Too many in my oppinion, but oh well. 1. Quote: eater of fruits and grains and nuts; someone who eats no meat or fish or (often) any animal products From this I can say, Leather is "vegetarian" because no one eats leather. But I can also agrue that fish is indeed meat. But is gelatin is not considered a meat, is it? Only an animal product, as is leather. 2. Still, no one eats leather, but this eleminates gelatin because it is certainly not a plant. Quote: Herbivore - An animal that feeds chiefly on plants. 3. Quote: Consisting primarily or wholly of vegetables and vegetable products. This is basically saying the same thing as the others. Gelatin is not a plant. But it does say primarily. But that could also mean that some one who eats meat occassionally is still a vegetarian. Which is certainly not true! Well I did all that typing and research and have come to no conclusion. I wonder how many people will actually read this. sweatdrop Note: I don't use leather or eat gelitan.

I found something useful. I finally realized I should look up gelatin in dictionary.com. Man I should have done that a long time ago. Results: Quote: a colorless water-soluble glutinous protein obtained from animal tissues such as bone and skin Quote: A colorless or slightly yellow, transparent, brittle protein formed by boiling the specially prepared skin, bones, and connective tissue of animals and used in foods, drugs, and photographic film. Quote: A derived protein formed by boiling collagen of animal tissues. You'll have to look up the big words for yourself I'm too lazy to.

I don't think gelitan is vegitarian asits made from the hoof/skin/bone of an animal... but then again theres still the arguement of wether or not refined sugar is vegitarian as it is processed using animal bone. I still eat refined sugar, but I'm trying to cut back on it, and in the end eliminate it from my diet.

I up gelatin, and I found a very disturbing definition... Gelatin:is created by prolonged boiling of animal skin and connective tissue
Personaly I don't eat it unless my parents force me to. Which is really annoying by the way...

Lots of people become vegetarian because they love animals/ how the animals are treated, so, even if they arent eating it, it would still be against their views. I try not to wear leather and i'm cutting down, but its very hard as i'm a dancer and jazz shoes are generally made of leather crying Ooh, and thanks for the information about the refined sugar, i've never heard this before, thank you! xd
