Prologue

They say that there is one person out there who was made for you. A person who you are supposed to fall in love with. A person who fits you so perfectly, it’s shocking. A soul mate. I don’t believe in soul mates. I hardly even believe in true love.

When I was in high school, I earned the nick name “Ice Princess.” The “Princess” part comes from the boys thinking I was prettier than any other girl they had ever seen. I could care less if I was pretty or not. The “Ice” part comes from me hardly ever accepting to go on a date, or invitations to parties. I’m not a cold person, but I honestly don’t care about boys, or parties. The truth is, I had developed a point system for boys. Each boy starts with zero points, and over time, they gradually gain points for various thing they do. Once a boy reaches one hundred points, he gets to go on a date with me.

Of course, there are levels under a date. At thirty points, he gets to walk me to class, fifty points, and I will spend five minutes at lunch talking to him, things like that. But the chances of a boy making it to fifty points, or even thirty points, are very slim. In my entire high school career, only three boys made it to one hundred points.

And due to this fact, I never thought that college boys would be different than high school boys. And for my first semester, I was right. But when the spring semester started, a new boy came into my life. And in the first two days I had known him, he had collected two hundred forty-seven points. Two hundred forty-seven points, in two days, when most boys couldn’t get past sixty in four years.

Is it possible that I, Jessica Jeong, the girl who doesn’t believe in true love, had found her soul mate in Chang Min Shim? Chang Min Shim, the Korean boy who doesn’t like his given name of Max, and uses his traditional Korean name instead? Chang Min Shim, the boy who made my point system falter, then fade.
