Ayreon is not a band, but a project by a Dutch composer named Anthony Arjen Lucassen. As a project, it is not a static combination of people, but rather, each new album draws a different band together from unrelated singers and musicians, many of them independently famous, such as Blind Guardian's Hansi Kursch, and which might be of more interest to Krad, Timo Kotipelto from Stratovarius. If you want to see the whole list, which is quite large, you can click on the wikipedia link below, which appears to be accurate. I guarantee that you know at least one of them, or at least one of the bands that one of them comes from.

Ayreon is typically progressive rock, although it combines a diverse array of sounds, ranging from Classical, Jazz, Folk, Metal, etc. All but one album, Actual Fantasy, is designated as a rock-opera, meaning that the others have a story. This is part of the reason for the many vocalists that have been on Ayreon, because each character in each rock operas tends to be sung by different vocalists. The stories of each album seem to be connected, though exactly how is made very cryptic until the most recent album, 01011001. The link below is an interview with Arjen Lucassen concerning Into the Electric Castle. It might not be interesting if you're not a fan yet, but even the first minute will give you a glimpse of Arjen and his funny mannerisms.
