So...

Any thoughts on Stephenie Meyers' "Breaking Dawn"?

Hey Pixie! If this is a book you'd like to talk about, be sure to post over here! That thread is for book discussions of any kind and it's at the "Writer's Circle". I don't know if many of us have time to read but I sure don't. It's really quite a shame that I don't have much time or interest to read anything lately. sad

You know, since I know nothing about "Breaking Dawn" could we discuss about "Breaking Wind"? rofl Don't mind me, I'm usually this silly. Ha-ha! lol

I read the book. I have to say it was interesting but she (in a way) breaks the rules of her own world. Not getting into full details since I'm sure many haven't read it. I liked the book but parts of it are different.

You mean that it's like it was written as fanfiction. xD That's what I thought about it. Still good though.

It is essentially a giant fanfiction that wasn't entirely neccessary. It was vastly inferior to the rest of the series and it finished up in a very neat, convenient, and sickly sweet manner.
I mean the twilight series is acceptable if you have nothing better to read except for that, and you are stuck sick in the bathroom for three hours, but other than that, the series has no real literary merit.

I apologize in advance for the wall of text.

I actually enjoyed reading the Twilight series, but it was a shallow enjoyment, much the same as when I pick up almost any YA novel. Something to escape with. Then again, I don't tend to get offended when people break imaginary rules made up by some other person that was just making s**t up in the first place. Because the original myth had to come from somewhere, didn't it? It was someone's idea, and somewhere along the line people adopted it as a standard. I say meh! It's all just imagination anyway, so who are we to judge it? "OMG, Vampires are supposed to be like X! Werewolves like Y!" Nope. They're fictional. They can be whatever they want to be.

I feel that people are being too harsh on Meyer. You don't see anyone going around bashing Meg Cabot because she wrote The Princess Diaries, even though I would lump her into the same literary category as Stephenie Meyer. What the haters seem to forget is that not every book has to have a big huge hidden meaning behind it. Most authors don't write with that intent to begin with, and most people who read for pleasure tend to want a book where they can get into a story and lose themselves in something that is not their own life. Not everyone is the same, so if someone really adores Twilight while another person really enjoys The Great Gatsby, it's fine. Let them be. Seriously.

Moving on, something I enjoyed far more than the Twilight series was The Host. I found that book fascinating, but it was probably due to the subject matter. Regardless, her writing seemed much more matured in that book than in the Twilight series. Her characters seemed far more developed and the plot was more original (and in my opinion, far more polished).

When people go and bash Stephenie Meyer, I shrug. I can see their point, but I also sit back and think to myself, "Twilight is the first book she's ever completed, and here it is, published." A lot of authors don't get their first book published, and what we see is a much more polished, experienced "first book/series" from them. So I am personally not all that offended by her work; I actually am happy with the direction in which her literary skill is evolving. I bet if we give her about ten years, she'll write something really good. Most authors do.

I'm also not telling you to hold your breath waiting. People are free to feel what they feel about the topic. I'm just speculating.

And just to clear something up, I think that the hype given to Twilight is vastly unneeded, but since the series has encouraged a lot of people to start reading for pleasure, I don't really say much about it. I'm glad to see people cracking a book, even if it is just Twilight. It's a step toward literacy either way.

Yeah authors do get better after their first book. I loved the series. I just didn't like the unneeded hype that it was given. I can't wait to see what she comes out with down the road. The Host was very good in my opinion.

So Twilight was good for you Alanora? Hmm, I suppose the movie is not as good as the book, is it?

Oh God, no. The movie was godawful. It was...ugh. Trash.

Then again, I don't really like Kristen Stewart's flavor of acting very much. She's so deadpan.

Gee, I suppose I should avoid the movie but if I actually catch it on cable I'll give it a shot. mrgreen
Kristen Stewart, huh? I wonder if she's a relative of Patrick Stewart... neutral

On the topic of Twilight, and for those who have seen the first movie, I found an AWESOME parody video made to Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold." It's fantastic! These people cracked me up!

If you want to check it out, it's at www.thehillywoodshow.com

I thought it was good long but good. You can really tell in the end what Jacobs whole purpose of being in the book series was with this book. It answers all your questions really.
