Physical Description: Born into Clan Martuk, Jag possesses the dark green shoulder hump characteristic to his bloodline. A large individual even by an elcor's standards, Jag stands a good head taller than most other sentients. His skin is thick and leathery, studded with small scales of an emerald-brown hue, and his musculature is almost stereotypical at it's size. His gaze, red due to the lack of pigmentation in his eyes, is intense and analytical but always active, darting around the room whenever he isn't focusing on something. His body language suggests someone with a deep-rooted suspicion of everything around him, and when in public he knows how to look inconspicuous, even for a krogan.
Background Summary: A relatively large group, the Martuks were one of the numerous clans that had established themselves on previously rachni-occupied worlds. Their numbers bountiful and their organization strong, Jag's clan had grown accustomed to the relative peace before the krogan rebellion and, thanks to the shrewd thinking of a wise matriarch, had begun a tradition of hiring out it's strongest warriors for income. Back in those days, having a "savior of the galaxy" as a bodyguard or even as an escort would guarantee a safe and peaceful trip.
Eventually branching their services into other fields of specialization, the various internalized businesses of clan Martuk became the closest thing the krogans had to a merchant family. Continuing the krogan tradition of being almost entirely self-sufficient, the Martuks became armorers, weaponsmiths, doctors and researchers so that their warriors could become some of the finest in CItadel space. They reached this goal, as many a battlemaster graduated from their academies to lead their own mercenary groups. A Martuk krogan was someone you were proud to know, even as a business relation. This all changed with the beginning of the rebellions.
During the krogan rebellions, clan Martuk was responsible for sponsoring an entire systems' worth of warriors. Strongly in favor of krogan expansionism, the Martuk Matriarch maintained friendly relations with many other clans and supplied them their tools of war. Asking for their strongest warriors in return, she ensured that the Martuk bloodlines stayed strong, and that those allied with her would rule the fields of battle wherever they went. The genophage ended this.
Crippling their entire economic structure, the genophage hurt clan Martuk more than it could ever imagine, affecting not only it's workforce but also it's target market. The sudden shift from weapons manufacture to intensive research hurt many a krogan weaponsmith, and caused social tensions to rise with inflation. Soon, every krogan was on every other krogan's death list and a fiery civil war erupted. Now a shadow of it's former self, the million or so surviving Martuks settled on breeding and attempting to cure the genophage. Having enough personnel to maintain but one of their formidable academies, all following krogans born into the clan were quickly indoctrinated into lives of scientific research and breeding. Unsurprisingly, this meant that most Martuks became emotionally imbalanced, animals barely kept in check by critical thought. Now the clan slowly dies, continuing to hire out warriors for capital and raising it's young to live in a world that excludes them.
Martuk Jag was just one of these children. Born after the genophage, raised as a scientist, taught that nearly the entire universe was out to get him. He finished his studies and joined the Martuk labs only a few months before the last academy succumbed to territorial squabbles. Coming from a long line of incredibly strong battlemasters, though not biotic himself, Jag was then able to escape with hundreds of years of genophage cure research as clan Martuk finally consumed itself by flame and blade.
Continuing his research on his own with what little capital he had at the time of his escape, he soon realized that his savings were not going to be nearly enough. Going through extensive physical retraining, he was able to gain adequate motor skills to go with his sheer physical ruggedness. Thus ready, he began to take degrading security jobs and very light mercenary work to fund his projects. His life continued without advancing much through most of his late hundreds.
Recently, however, Jag has been able to devote himself completely to his research. A salarian investors group has approached him with a gift of extensive research facilities as well as generous funding. Claiming to be repentant for the role their species played in the downfall of the krogan, the salarians have provided Jag with everything he needs to make his clan's dream come true. Thinking of a brighter future, though wary due to the strange nature of his funding, Jag continues to work on a cure, tantalized by rumors of Saren Arterius' success at finding the same.
