While it makes a very good movie and play, i just don't believe that there was a barber that kills people for his accomplice. There just isn't enough proof. I haven't seen anything to make me believe that Sweeney is real..

Not exactly the story as we know it, but Sweeney Todd HAS existed. Really.

I actually saw an episode od Cities of the Underworld (if I remember the name correctly) that under the streets of London, there is an area under some buildings that could have been used of Sweeney Todd and Mrs.Lovett's work. So I believe he might have been real.
