Muse stretched and looked at the setting sun. The colors bled into each other, reds into oranges, oranges into pinks and so forth, as the moon and stars made their appearance. How long had it been, she wondered, since she last saw any hippogriffs? Since she had anyone to speak to or fly with?
Since before the cold season, that much she knew. Amethyst eyes stared out across the scarred landscape. Ever since the phoenixes came, the Valley had suffered greatly. Many had fled the Valley, leaving never to return and some had gone to the Mountains. She wondered if Ona was one of those who had fled...
Standing and shaking out her wings, Muse took to the air in search of food.

Down below on the ground, Onarasuto slowly approached the cavern he called home. It was the same place where he had lived at for all his life; the place he had known since his birth. Though every now and then he would leave for various periods of time, this was always the place where he would return.
With a soft sigh, Ona, now an adult, carefully pushed aside some of the vegetation that started to take over the entrance once again. It had been awhile since he had been here, but he was glad to be back.
Since his return, he noticed that many hippogryphs were no longer around. He supposed it was because of the arrival of the phoenixes, but he couldn't really point the blame at another race just because. It could have been something else that drove his own kind far from these lands...
Before entering the cavern, he paused to look up at the empty skies. However, they weren't so empty now. There was a familiar figure up far ahead, and he almost couldn't believe his eyes for what he saw.
Muse...?

Muse lazily did loops and swirls in the air. The air currents were strong today and carried her well. Soon, she would have to come down to eat. Not that there was much left in the Valley. After the big fire destroyed much of the northern valley, all the life had pretty much fled. Including other hippogriffs.
She had pondered more than once returning to the SharpTooth Mountains and seeing her clan. Maybe leadership had changed and she would be allowed back in. But was that what she really wanted? "I want companionship again."
Looking down, she noticed a large shadow moving below. She was near Ona's old den. Blinking once or twice, she realized that she recognized the shadow. "Ona," she called out loudly.

From below, Ona watched the flying hippogryph, and his assumptions were soon confirmed as he heard her call out his name. Feeling a sudden rush of joy from this, he quickly began to beat down his wings to join her in the sky.
"Muse! Is that really you?" he replied as he ascended above the treetops to make his way over by her. From the looks of things, his old friend had not changed much, but he couldn't quite say the same for himself, who had grown considerably since they last saw one another. Still changes or no change, he was very happy to meet up with Muse once again.
"It's been so long..."

Chirping happily, Muse flew close up against Onarasuto. To see someone she knew and recognized after so long! Had it been so long? About a turn of the seasons, she supposed. Heading down towards the ground, "It has been a while since we have been together. How have you been?"

The male chirped in return before following her towards the ground. Oh how elated he was to see his old friend once again. Or to see anyone familiar for that matter. But perhaps this was a sign that life would return to the valleys once again...
"I've been well. You weren't hurt at all last year during the heat wave were you?"
Onarasuto didn't want to admit it, but while he enjoys solitude to some extent, he was starting to feel quite lonely without any contact with others like himself.

Muse hissed at the reminder of the heat wave and the big fire that wiped out a lot of life. But to see Ona meant that there still had to be others out there. Not that any else had ever mattered to her. But that fact that life was continuing was a good thing.
"Better now. I was away but I saw the giant fireball strike and the huge fire that wiped out so much. Nothing but sparse grasses to the north."
Muse was not much for being around others. But there was something calming about being this close to her friend.

Nodding to what Muse had to say, Ona let out a small sigh as he heard of the destruction. He hadn't witnessed it himself, but he could only imagin how terrifying it must have been to be in the area of the fire. And he was glad to know that Muse hadn't gotten caught up in the fire as well... It'd only mean more lonliness for him, if he were to lose the only one he was close to.
"That's good to hear... and at least now things are starting to be restored... Out here... destruction will only lead to new life... and that's what the phoenixes are all about correct?"
With a slight smile, he continued to descend towards the ground.
"And I'm very happy to be able to see you again Muse..."

"Destruction and renewal. It is part of the cycle just as life and death are... So yes, the forests will one day again sweep the Valley. But there is a purpose to the meadowlands as well. I have seen a new clan forming in that area... Perhaps new blood and new youngsters to repopulate...." Muse stopped for a moment, looking at Ona.
She landed lightly on her feet and looked around. "Our old cave is still around here, yes?"

The sound of a new clan forming was good news, and he supposed he should go and meet with them sometime. But for now, he was a bit weary from travel.
Ona nodded lightly to Muse's question before looking over in the general direction of the cave.
"Indeed. It's right over that way in fact.. I was about to go rest for awhile there but I found an old friend flying above," he said with a smile as he stood by her, "You're more than welcome to rest there as well... as it's your home as much as mine."

Muse chirped happily in response. Her steps were lightened at spending some time with her old friend who had grown up so quickly it seemed. His fur and wings reminded her of the nuts that fell off trees... A deep reddish brown color. Dipping her head, she started to make her way towards the cave.
"Another clan to the meadowlands up north and a clan to the very south it seems with hippogriffs that wear the skins of giant cats. The colors, not the actual skins." Why was she feeling so flustered?
