Right now, I'm desperately trying to convince my parents to let me get my first piercing.
My navel...
I need help since they're so conservative...
I'm trying to learn ways to sway them by listening to other people's stories...
Assistance? heart

Haha umm ok please don't count this as an idea. i just went and got it... if your folks have real strong convictions about peircings then this aint a great idea... i guess i was lucky having an ex-biker for a dad and an ex-hippy for a mum...

their arguement will be that your too young to make such a perminant choice, (wether theres truth behind that or not im not to judge). if u want something simple and relitively conservative (ear, belly button or tougne? i dunno how conservative is conservative really) but the truth is none of them are irreversable. the scaring involved is near invisable unless u really look for it. also those kinds of peircings have little to no affect to carrer options.

if your looking for something a little more drastic (facial peircings and alike) it is probabley best that u hold fire for a while. wait till u have a better argument (like age). in the long run if u want them nothing can stop u. if u have to wait a few years till u get them that will only make u appreciate them that much more.

Well, as a mom I'd say that 15 is a bit young for piercings past the ears or nose. I wouldn't have allowed my kids to have that done at that age and I'm in between conservative and liberal. When my middle daughter turned 18, her dad and I took her to our tattoo artist, Fish. She got her first tattoo on her lower back and we paid for it. That was her birthday present. I paid for my oldest daughters first one too for her first Mother's Day and if my son who is 17 wants one for his 18th birthday, I'll get him one too. But, I do feel that tattoos and piercings should be done only after alot of thought and at the proper age. At 18 you are legal to do it without your parents permission, but, if you still live in their home, you still need to be respectful of their wishes. I would recommend at that time if you still want to get a piercing or tattoo, that you speak respectfully and maturely with your parents. Explaining to them what you want to do, that you will be paying for it with your own money and that you wanted to be upfront with them since you are of legal age, but you also want to be respectful of them. If they are still against it, then it is up to you what you will do then depending on their concequences.

I am sorry that your parents are such as they can't see past the "stigma" that others have imposed on people with tattoos and piercings, but I am sure that they love you and really only want what is best for you. I advise my children also, not to get their tattoos in places that may cause them to loose out on oportunities in life. They will have time for that after they establish themselves in their future work fields. They don't really care too much about piercings, not yet anyway, but their dad, who doesn't care if they are covered in tattoos, forbids them while they are living in our home to get piercings other than the regular ear ones. It is just his thing. He has tattoos, but piercings, uh, no.

So, I know, I am probably rambling at this point, but I just wanted you to see it from both sides. I totally understand where you are coming from, tattoos and piercings are great! But, honoring your parents, even though frustrating at times, that is truly great! You are young, enjoy just being a kid, adulthood happens all too fast and even with it's advantages, I'd still love to go back and be your age all over again. I hope I wasn't too preachy, that isn't my intent. I as a parent, want what is best for all young people, not just my own. biggrin

My parents have always been quite leanient, because at least piercings can be taken out, whereas tattoos are permanent, but unfotunately I have a very strong rebellious streak and a habit of doing stupid things when I've had a bit to drink so most of my piercings I drunkenly did myself, however when I was 8 I got my ears pierced because I promised my parents that I'd learn to swim, I have a phobia of water but I showed them in the house that I KNEW how to swim, I just had no intentions of ever actually doing it! When I was 14 I wanted them done again higher up, so I saved up half the money from my paper round and my parents gave me the other half so I got them done that way, if you really want a piercing then TALK (dont shout) it out with your parents and maybe try to reach a comprimise, like after you finish a certain task they set you (like me with the swimming) or if you wait until after your 16th birthday or something, unfortunately what might seem unfair to you at the moment is really just your parents worrying for your safety and wanting the best for you, but if you point out that piercings can be removed at least then that might help your cause, but talk to them and see what they have to say, discussion wins more wars than bombs, good luck!

That is very good advice! Look at you, the wee one isn't even out yet and you are already on the road to be a great mom! biggrin

I didn't really have to; my mothers got six piercings and five tattoos herself.
I just told her I wanted my navel, she asked if I had money, and we went.
I have 13 piercings & 2 tattoos, i'm 16, never fought for any of them.

D':

but, try the personal expression approach.
or the "no one can see it under my shirt, so it'll only be seen when I want it to".

Ah... maybe if I wait till next year...
I'll be 16 by then so it might just work.

Tried the "no one can see it under my shirt, so it'll only be seen when I want it to" before... she's quiet about it, and its getting harder for me to bring it up...
Thanks though!

How do you have tattoos at the age of 16?
I thought the age was 18, even with parental permission.
Unless you don't live in the lameass US of A.
No offense to those patriotic Americans here.
I'm just a Canadian who happens to have to live in California for the time being.

Well... I did a bad thing with my second lobe holes, and just got them done at the mall. Then called Mum (sleepovers are wonderful things) and casually mentioned that I'd had them pierced. Oops. (Mind you, I was 17)

With my double helix, I was out of home and 19, so I didn't see any point in telling her for the first hole. I did end up warning her about the second, but that was mostly just because I had the opportunity over a lunch.

With my imminent tattoo, I'm currently back at home so I told Mum out of respect that it was what I wanted. She understood that it's not her choice, and I think she appreciated the forethought, even if she doesn't appreciate the action.

She's pretty allowing when it comes to self-expression. She makes it clear when she doesn't approve (she hasn't really approved of any of my piercings past the very first lobe piercings, I don't think) but she also accepts that it's my body and that I'm at least getting everything done professionally.

So I don't really have all that much advice for you, sorry. gonk I'd suggest maybe waiting another year, or making a deal with your parents: Your grades will be above such a point, and you will earn the right to get your navel pierced. If your grades are not above such a point, the navel is not pierced. Perhaps something like that? Bargain for it. Don't demand it, don't cause a fuss about it, but calmly and relentlessly put forth suggestions. Eventually they'll either let you get it done, or you'll be old enough to get it done without their consent.
