The latest Batman movie (The Dark Knight) has the first ever Watchmen trailer running before it. Theres huge talk amongst the fans of the Watchmen if they're even going to see the movie in 2009. That's a huge problem cause how can DC Comics make this a success if the core fans are talking about skipping this movie. Then theres the public which most likely wont know the Watchmen and start rifling off about how the characters are a copy of other characters. This is going to happen since the critics were saying how the F4 characters were such a rip of previous Comic Movie characters. That made me laugh cause it would be the other way around. When you do look at it Night Owl can be linked to Batman especially the way they designed Night Owl's costume... really lame. Doctor Manhattan is actually a rip of Doctor Solar and/or Captain Atom. The movie in my opinion looks like it's the same value of Fantastic 4 or the first Hellboy. However, having Paramount, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures backing the film the production could be outstanding. On that note it can go either way, but right now I'm leaning towards not watching the movie.

I'll probably see it, since it's petty much a commentary on caped crusader /super-hero comics in general. I'm wondering if they're going to keep the comic-within-the-comic Tales of the Black Freighter.
If you've read the Watchmen comic, you already know why everyone looks like someone else. Like I said, he's making a comment about the realism of these powerless, caped crusaders who are suddenly usurped by this atomically powered super hero. The discovery of Doctor Manhattan draws the Cold War dangerously close to becoming an all-out nuclear war,
especially when Manhattan abandons the Earth to go live on Mars.
The Russians are afraid to attack America because we are in possession of Dr. Manhattan, the caped crusaders are costumed lunatics compared to his ultimate power, and the woman he loves is terrified of him and some his...different love-making techniques. In the world of the Watchmen, he comes off as being a true freak, as he is the only super hero compared to all the Batman-esque heroes who surround him.

Now if they can actually pull off this and all the other intriguing little sub-plots in the comic, then it'll be a half-way decent film. They've been trying to adapt it into a movie since 1986. It's also one of the most depressing comics I've ever read, due to the realism of the characters and their cartoonish heroic personalities.

My main complaint with the trailer is that they used an old Smashing Pumpkins song off the Batman & Robin OST. Doesn't bode well....

I'm borrowing the comic from a friend. I haven't actually gotten around to reading it yet, but my friend gives it high praise and is excited about the movie.

I think I liked it overall, but it certainly had it's flaws like the over kill on the fight scenes and Manhattan's palace on Mars was kind of cartoony. Loved the opening montage, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, the prison break, and the Comedian's last fight were all really good. Also liked how Laurie and Dan pretty much stayed the same from the comic. Got the same feeling when watching their scenes as when I was reading the comic. I wish they would have shown more about why Viedt's new World Peace wasn't such a great thing what with the newspapers unwilling print criticism of the USSR, now allied with the US.
