From a literary standpoint, stories like IwtV, TVL, and QotD or incredible. They're well-written, the characters are developed, the word choice is lovely, the descriptions are right on par, and they're all-around fantastic books. But it drives me crazy that a nut-o like Anne Rice was the one to write them.

For a long time I've heard again and again that she strongly discourages fanfiction. So much so that she will have her lawyers pounce on your before you can type, "And then Lestat left Louis for a beautiful girl writing fanfiction who read all his books and loved him . . ."

Fine. Go ahead. If you are truly offended at the thought of other people manipulating character that you created, then go ahead and ban it. If she has a legal claim to her characters, then legally she is well within her right.

But how stupid can you be? Honestly. Banning online fanfiction doesn't stop anyone from writing the stories. It doesn't stop anyone from developing their own stories about the characters in their head. Books are written to be read, correct? Well each reader is going to interpret a book differently. For instance, some readers pity Armand. Some hate him. Some think he's the most awesome creature alive. Characters are going to be interpreted by readers either way, so what difference does writing fanfiction even make?

More than that, I can't believe what a hypocrite Rice is. I MIGHT respect her and actually believe her when she says that her ban is for the sanctity of her characters, but then why the movies? QofD was probably worse than any reader's interpretation of the work, and even IwtV manipulated the characters and events away from their original portrayal in the book. I simply can't believe that she is honestly trying to protect her characters, when she's allowed movie production houses to write fanfiction in the form of screenplays.

How can I respect an author that limits her fans, the readers who buy her books, who go to her book signings, who grow to know and love her characters, and yet allows big production companies to manipulate and desecrate her precious characters? The only difference I can see is that the production companies have probably made her millions. It's sickening. She's a hypocrite. Why couldn't someone normal have written the VC?

very valid points. Personally if I wrote a book that people were so enthralled with that they wanted to use my characters I would be thrilled. I would read the fanfictions and be like..."hmmm...they think my character would do this...never thought of it."
I don't know maybe the fame went to her head?

On QofD, yes that was one of the worst vampire movies I've seen. On IwaV, I don't agree, I think it was her that wrote the screenplay. (don't quote I may be wrong) But I do agree that having a ban on Fanfiction is both pointless and stupid. It's like trying to outlaw sex, the more you try to stop it from happening the more they try to make it happen.

Yes, she's crazy. Anyone so uptight, shouldn't be sharing their ideas. If you are that attached to your chars, keep it to yourself.

She isn't bat s**t crazy or a nut-o...she's greedy. Fanfiction doesn't make her any money whereas horrid bastardarzations of her books in movie format make her millions. Clearly this is a person motivated by money.

I wonder if her stance on fanfiction has changed now that she's all in touch with god now writing for him (and pretty much not doing jack s**t with the vamp books anymore). rolleyes

I have to disagree. No one could have written the VC but her. Think about what you just said. Masterpieces are rarely if ever created by normal people. About fanfiction, while I do like and would feel honored to have stories written about my characters, I do understand her view. You must think how close the characters may be to her, it varies with authors. Some authors put a piece of their soul into their works/characters. For some, they are like children. Any author has that right. About the movies, she wrote the script for Interview with the vampire, she even offered the script for Queen of the Damned but they rejected it.
Technically, on your logic, you could call any author greedy. Publishing is about money for the most part. Authors seek to publish their work for recognition and to some extent money. If they didn't, they would just post or give it freely. (Fictionpress/Deviantart anyone?)
Also, contrary to the popular view, fan based works show the popularity of an author thus gaining said author more recognition and money.
