~~~*Dahlia Gillspie*~~~
Some people in Silent Hill thought of Dahlia as a profit, but most people think her sanity was hit hard when her daughter was burned in a fire. She leads Harry in the right direction, but she always speaks in riddles. She gives Harry keys to move farther, and a Flauros which was of help later.
She is a priestess of The Order, which is a doomsday cult that worships one major god and many lesser gods and angels. Dahlia used occult rituals to impregnate Alessa with her god. To expedite the summoning of God, Dahlia set their house on fire with Alessa trapped inside. Although she was rescued by Travis Grady, the burns left her totally disfigured. Because of an incantation set by her mother, Alessa lived despite her wounds being fatal.
Alessa's spirit splits in two to refuse birthing the God. One of the halves is discovered by Harry Mason. Alessa realizes her mother intends to use her to birth the god still, and realizes it is a possibility as long as she is living. During this time, Kaufmann grew impatient after waiting for the return he had been promised (wealth, presumably) for his role in the conspiracy, leading to a falling out with Dahlia. Kaufmann had a stash of Aglaophotis to abort the demon incase Dahlia turned on him.
Dahlia gives hints to Henry as to where he might find his daughter, and she tells him the town is being absorbed by darkness. There are seals carved throughout the town which Dahlia calls the Marks of Samael and tells Harry if the seals are completed, all hope is lost. Actually, the seals are The Seal of Metatron which are used to prevent the birth of the god.
Overtime you realize Dahlia is hiding her true motives, and she confesses that the seal is really the Seal of Metatron. It is her motive to find Alessa before she can make anymore marks, so she makes it her responsibility to see to it Harry survives, even though Alessa bends reality to hinder him. Dahlia ransacks Kaufmann's office and destroys his Aglaophotis, but depending on whether you help him live or not depends on whether he grabs another vial or not. Dahlia is killed when Alessa *in either form* sets her on fire, which most view as Poetic Justice.
Dahlia is also responsible for telling Walter Sullivan his mother was room 302. Throughout the diary entries in the Forest World, the writer wrote of an important lady with the beginning syllable "Dah". Further connection of Dahlia and Walter can be found in The Wish House just before the death of Jasper Gein, where Henry finds a note beside a bookshelf close to the stairs asking if Alessa was found and if Walter was ready, possibly implying that Alessa Gillespie and Walter Sullivan were initially intended to be used together in a ritual to descend the god of The Order.
~~Lisa Garland~~
isa Garland is a nurse who worked at Alchemilla Hospital. She was addicted to White Claudia, a drug being dealt by the hospital's administrator, Dr. Michael Kaufmann, and Silent Hill's resident cult, the Order. One of Lisa's duties was to take care of coma patient Alessa Gillespie. Alessa's body was covered in burn wounds which would not heal, and were always oozing blood and pus, requiring frequent bandaging. Lisa did not understand what was keeping the girl alive, and the ordeal of constantly replacing the bandages took a toll on her sanity.
When Harry stumbles into the 'Alternate' Hospital, which is full of gore and demonic nurses, Harry finds Lisa huddled in a room hiding from the monsters. She claims that she has no idea what is going on, explaining that she passed out, and when she came to everything was different. Lisa is a good source of information about Dahlia Gillespie and the old cult that used to reside in the town.
Harry periodically loses consciousness and finds himself back in the Otherworld hospital, without explanation. Interestingly, Lisa does not act startled when he awakens, claiming that he never left and that he was having a bad dream. During one of these episodes, Harry wakes up with a start and finds himself in the hospital again; Lisa emerges over him with her eye twitching.
During the final paranormal trip through the hospital, Lisa explains to Harry that she ventured into the basement of the hospital and began to "understand" what is happening. Lisa realizes that she is in fact a monster, no different than the other nurses roaming the hospital, explaining how she is trapped in the Otherworld and cannot leave. When she begs Harry to hold her, Harry shoves her back, and Lisa starts bleeding from her head and every orifice. She staggers toward Harry until he runs out of the room. Although she sobs and bangs on the door behind him, Harry is too frightened and holds the door shut, leaving her to her fate.
Harry may reenter Lisa's room if the player wishes, only to find that she is gone. Among her things is her diary; In it, Lisa writes that she can't stand being alone with "that patient" in the basement any more and is going to tell "the Doctor" that she quits. A cryptic video tape which Harry found earlier can now be played if he inserts it into a VCR. The tape recording shows a woman covering her face with her hands (but speaking in Lisa's voice) pleading with an unseen figure and promising she "won't tell a soul".
Lisa does not appear again until the end of the game. If the conditions for earning either the Good or Good+ endings are met, she appears after defeating the final boss; just as Kaufmann is about to escape, a bloodied Lisa rises through the floor and drags the horrified Kaufmann down into the pit she came from. Whether this is really Lisa, or an apparition meant to punish Kaufmann, is left unknown.
"The name Lisa comes from an actress who plays a nurse and is a murderer in the movie Sanguelia. Her last name is borrowed from Judy Garland, who plays a character in The Wizard of Oz who has lost her way in a dreamland."
~~Harry Mason~~
Harry is a 32 year old writer. His wife, who still remains unnamed, died four years before the first game. Three years before she died, they found a child on the side of the road outside of Silent Hill, took the child home and named her Cheryl. For the next 4 years, Harry takes care of Cheryl up until the events of the first game. Harry and Cheryl then decide to take a vacation to Silent Hill. While Harry is driving towards the town late at night with Cheryl in the front seat, he sees a young woman walk into the path of his vehicle. He tries to avoid her but loses control of his Jeep and crashes into a ditch. A few hours later in the morning, he awakens to find Cheryl missing. This is where the game starts off.
Harry Mason is the archetypal Silent Hill protagonist. As such he deviates substantially from other classic video game protagonists. He is clumsy, and it is obvious he has never received training in survival or the use of firearms, a deficit which serves both the realism of the game and the horror it attempts to induce in the player. Harry is the father of Heather (the main character of Silent Hill 3). He was brutally murdered in Silent Hill 3 by the Missionary under Claudia Wolf's order.
Harry's radio and pocket clip flashlight serve as the template for all future Silent Hill protagonists, save for the sole exception of Henry Townshend from Silent Hill 4: The Room, who possesses neither.
"When development first began on this project, because of his role as the doting, dutiful father he was given the name "Humbert Mason" sweatdrop , which was referenced from the protagonist of Stanley Kubrick's film Lolita. However since this is such an uncommon name, it was changed by the English staff. The truth is that "Harry" was the nickname of the person who named the character. I thought, "they're the same", but..."
~*Alessa Gillespie*~
Alessa was a kind, but troubled girl who was often the subject of constant ridicule by her classmates for being born out of wedlock. Her mother, Dahlia, refused to give out the name of her father, thus resulting in Alessa being called a witch. She runs away from her classmates and ends up being molested by Colin, the janitor. Christabella finds her and decides that she needs to be purified.
Dahlia fought relentlessly, but eventually gave in. She was taken to the Grand Hotel where she was "purified", which is the town's way of burning things. Alessa got her revenge during her death by burning the town and all its citizens. Alessa was hospitalized but she was never the same. She never forgave the town for what they did to her. So, with the power of darkness, she got her deadly revenge on all those connected to that fateful incident.
She has been seen by Harry/Rose when they go looking for their missing daughter, Cheryl/Sharon. Alessa has led these two protagonists throughout the town and has helped them to discover the truth about the town.
At the end of Silent Hill 1 (PS1), Alessa gives birth to the "god" of the town. After Harry defeats it, she reappears with a baby. The baby is Heather. Then she finally dies.
