All I Can't Say.

there are so many words i cannot say,
when i look into your eyes.
i want to be able to tell you one day,
but i'm left speechless everytime i try.

You must have stumbled across the key,
and discovered so much more.
You found a hidden place in me,
you found my heart and opened the door.
And i cried in pain
of losing my dear friend.

Will it ever be the same again?
If it passes will it be the end?
I realized it was worth so much,
as i lie in bed that night.
so i allowed my soul to be touched,
without even putting up a fight.
Are my eyes decieving me,
when i see you standing there?
are you playing games,
just to prove i care?

You speak my name in a prelude,
in a reference to love,
with such loving attitude,
as if it were a message from above.
with the palms of your hands
pressed firmly against mine,
a white dove lands,
and the sun begins to shine.

Someday i will see,
though that day has not come yet.
You'll say you love me,
but will you ever forget?
If that happens and my spirit dies,
if my emotions drop,
will you want to hold me when i cry?
or will the love just suddenly stop?
We can't expect to fall in love and never cry.

You'll stay and play your part,
but after the beauty starts to die,
will your foot prints still be on my heart?
Though it would be hard to say goodbye,
your friend I'll always be,
as long as we try,
to keep the friendship between you and me.

The letter I will not send
will casually inquire,
how could you have brought it to an end?
I was your one desire.
After this life is over,
you'll be the one person i know i'll miss.

It'll be too late to start over, and so i leave you with this...
I'll hold you for a life time,
if you'll just hold my hand.
We could have a wonderful time,
in the days we have not planned.

so this is my poem i'd like any constructive critizim or just your thoughts about it. thanks.

let me in!

baby i'm just here to help!

i'd do anything for you.
Anything you want i'd do for you.

i'd die for you and that scares the s**t outta me.

you want to do what ever you want and get drunk every night.?

then i'll stay beside you and watch over you so nothing happens to you

you want to know everything?

then i'll go out and figure it out for you so you don't get hurt.

you want to be taller?

then i'll make the world crawl on their knees just so you can look down on it.

you want a perfect relationship?

let me have you.

let me show you how perfect i could treat you.

let me take care or you.

baby just let me in. thats all i ask. let me have that piece of you.

i don't want your body i just want your mind, i want your soul.

i need you to let me in.

thats all i ask.

let me in

idk if it would really count as a poem i was kinda just ranting but she said it sounded like a poem so...voila!

Vampires

NOTES: Vampire’s name is Galen. He’s claustrophobic. He doesn’t sleep in a coffin. He drives a Chrysler 300 silver with reflective silver tint with chrome rims. He also doesn’t care for darkness. When he was turned the vampires that did it locked him in a box for a quarter of a century before they released him. (He was turned in 1437. 569 years ago at the age of 30 making him 599 years old) He was nearly insane from the need to feed. Their master plan. He threatened to walk into the dawn before he would become the animals they were. They killed his entire family then turned him because they knew it would be the worst sort of torment for him to live like them. When they pulled him from the total void of the box he was wild with hunger. His body ached so badly he couldn’t control it. They brought him a little snack to ease the pain. A mortal female they had roughed up so she was bleeding in several places. He tried not to give in but they held her before him and he smelled the rich coppery smell of hot blood.
They laughed as he fed. From the first taste he wondered why he had denied himself the pleasure for so long. For several hundred years after that he fed on whomever whenever. Embracing that which he had so despised. He forgets his family and who he was as a human. A village in Romania draws him for some reason and he eventually gives in and goes there. The village has been deserted for a very long time. It was believed to be a place of great evil. He wonders through it until he comes to a home he remembers vaguely. It was as though everything in it had gone untouched for centuries. Curious. Memories come to him in sudden flashes. Voices heard, laughter, faces sparked like specters around the ruins of the house till he remembers it was his family home. His bloody rampaging is over. He’s amazed to find several items that belonged to his father and mother still hidden behind a false stone in the crumbling fireplace. He didn’t have many worldly possessions. Never felt tied to an object enough to drag it along with him. That day changed many things for him. He still needed blood to survive but he no longer took the kills. He began learning about everything that interested him. Along the way he amassed a tidy sum of money. Which he had invested. He moved to the states when his kind began being hunted in Romania. He settled in Seattle, WA because of the weather. It was misty and foggy most days affording him the luxury of going out during the day as long as he was clothed accordingly. He wears super dark sunglasses when he goes outside due to his eyes being hypersensitive to light. (He can see perfectly in darkness after all.)
Currently he was owner of a club that was widely known for it’s cuisine. He managed the place and booked the bands plus did some of the cooking. He employed a superb chef that was instructing him on the finer ways of food prep. It was his new outlet. Each new endeavor he embarked on he took very seriously. Nothing distracted him. He slept very little. When his employees commented on his lack of sleep he would jokingly say “I can sleep when I’m dead.” They didn’t understand the inner joke. No one did.
He can’t see most colors only the very bright ones. So he wears mostly black and red. Red being one of the colors he can distinguish. Most other colors register as shades of black or gray.

Lead Female : ?Elaina? El for short. She’s 23 years old taking care of her younger brother. She rides a tricked out crotch rocket that she stole from an impound yard where a good friend works. She’s a runner for a messenger service in the city. She wears black Goth style clothes. Has her tongue and eyebrow pierced as well as several in her ears. Her hair is black with several thick chunks of fire engine red. It’s sort of short and shaggy. They live in an abandoned building in a rough part of Seattle. She hides her bike inside the building with them so it doesn’t get stolen.

Brother : Jason she calls him Jase. He’s about 20 and a mooch to her. He thinks he’s a master thief just because he hasn’t got caught yet. She tries to convince him to get a job but he says he can’t be tied down to a commitment like that. He’s handsome and knows it. He’s 5'10" and wiry. He would take off for days without notice. Totally unreliable. He’s intelligent but has a total lack of ethics. They’ve only had each other since their parents died seven years prior. It was a miracle she got him to graduate from high school the way he ditched class.
He mistakenly steals a beaten up leather bag from Galen when he sees him replace a money clip with a large bundle of money into a pocket in the interior of the bag. He thinks he hits the jackpot when he gets away and finds what else is in the bag. A laptop, a PDA, the money clip with just under $2500, a gold pocket watch, and a notebook. He sells the laptop and PDA right off the bat to a local pawn shop. Getting a pretty good sum for them. He pockets the watch thinking to keep it. It looked pretty old and had some cool writing on it. The leather bag and notebook get tossed at a dumpster outside the pawn shop.
He decides to let his sister cool down for a few days cause he knows she’s going to be highly pissed at what he did and want to strangle him. So with $4000 in ill gotten gains in his pockets he boards a plane to Vegas the next afternoon. Where he rents a room and decides to try his hand at gambling. After all, how hard could it be?
At first he starts out betting small to get the feel of it. Then when he begins hitting big he raises the stakes. He seems hot at the tables. He finds himself at a poker table and having observed for about an hour decides he can handle it. He sits down and is dealt into the next hand. He pays rapt attention to everything going on and remembers what cards have been used. He begins winning at that. A casino rep comes to the table and requests he come with him. At first he refuses and the rep wraps a large hand around his upper arm saying now sir. He was caught counting the cards. Unaware that he was being observed from a camera in the ceiling.
He was beautiful. There was no doubt in her mind about that! She sighed just looking at him. He had to be one of the most beautiful men she had ever had the misfortune to meet. It was definitely a misfortune that he was here. Misfortunate for him that is. She really didn’t want to do what obviously needed to be done. She sighed again in regret.
Damn her brother anyway! How did he always get them into these messes? She fumed to herself as she turned to look at the idiot in question. He was crouched behind several barrels watching the man pick his way through the debris on the warehouse floor below them.
“What are we going to do now?” she demanded in a hiss.
He shrugged his shoulders in that insolent way of his. She really wanted to throttle him when he did that most of the time. Now was no exception. Now, her fingers actually curled as though she would really do the deed. But instead of committing murder to her own flesh and blood she merely cuffed the back of his head. His eyes glowed in the warehouse gloom and a low rumble came from his chest.
“Did you just growl at me, Jase?” her voice held a note of incredulity.
He glared at her a moment more without saying a word then stood. Keeping low and to the shadows he stalked the man below them. She had no idea what he was about but she wasn’t going to let him out of her sight again. She had left him to his own devices for less than twenty minutes and look what happened. He gave their hiding place away. The maker only knew what else he had gotten himself into.
“I know you came in here.” a voice from below called out.
She stopped in mid-stride and crouched low on the rickety metal walkway. She looked down through the open metal grate of the scaffolding to find him. He was standing at an angle to the walkway in such a way that she could look down and see his face. He was far enough away that if he raised his eyes he would see the walkway. The sky was only now darkening to dusk but it was too dark in the abandoned building to be able to see into the shadows where she crouched down watching him. She could see him clearly enough thanks to the lights shining in the grimy windows from the street. The scaffolding ran along the walls of the building with intersections through the middle in several places. Below the walkways were windows with beveled glass. Some of the panes were broken leaving in light from the street lamps outside but most of the glass was grimy covered with years of dust. Beneath the scaffolding the building was open except for the office area at the back.
It had been a storage warehouse for a large company that sold textiles. The company had gone under due to a military operation that had sent the area into a recession about ten years back. Rolls of flooring stood on end along one wall. There was enough room between the rolls and the wall for a person to walk through. Along the other wall were stacked boxes of floor tiles. Large blue metal barrels were lined haphazardly around the center of the building. Some of them were laying on their sides from being shoved over by someone ransacking.
She watched from her perch in the scaffolding as the stranger picked his way carefully around the barrels. He stopped almost dead center of the building in a shaft of street light. Her breath caught again at the sight of him. He stood there quietly listening for any tattle tale signs that would give a hiding spot away. She held her breath and leaned her back against the scaffolding trying to shrink. Her eyes were tightly shut as though by doing that she would become invisible to him.
She sat there, eyes closed, breath held for what felt like eternity before she realized he was standing in the light and she was crouched in the darkness. He wouldn’t be able to see her way up here. And you think your brother is the idiot? she thought to herself. Even knowing the shadows were in her favor, she opened her eyes slowly and peeked cautiously through the railing down at him. If she hadn’t been holding her breath already, she would have given herself away by sucking in a great gulp of air in fear. He was looking directly at her. Though she tried to tell herself that he was looking at the scaffolding and couldn’t possibly see her hiding there, she could swear that his eyes locked with hers for a moment.
She could swear also that she saw a slight smile pass across his lips before he lowered his gaze to the floor again. Turning her head back to where her brother had been, she found he was gone. He had left her there. Alone. The big jerk! When she got her hands on him next time she didn’t think she would stop herself from strangling him. He probably didn’t even notice she wasn’t right behind him. She looked along the back of the building and saw that the window at the corner was open. Blast him! He was no longer even in the building.
How was she to get out of here? She could practically feel handsome down there breathing on the back of her neck. She shivered at that thought. She decided she would hide here until the man on the floor gave up looking for her idiot brother then she would find the idiot and give him a piece of her mind. With that settled she turned back to look for the handsome man and found that he wasn’t standing in the place she had last seen him. Looking directly beneath the scaffolding she found he wasn’t there, nor was he at the rear of the building.
Smiling she stood thinking that he must have given up already. That was easy. She dusted the seat of her skirt off where it had been sitting on her dusty boots as she gave another glance around the littered floor of the warehouse. Yep, definitely gave up. Well, heck, Jase must not have done anything that bad to the guy if he gave up the hunt that quickly.
Dread filled her suddenly when she realized she hadn’t heard the heavy industrial door open or close. Surely even in her state of duress she would have heard him leaving. That door couldn’t be opened quietly if your life depended on it. Which with Jase around, sometimes it did.
On tip toe trying to be quiet as a mouse she backed along the scaffolding the way she had come. She strained her eyes trying to catch any glimpse of movement on the floor below. Seeing absolutely nothing on the ground level she raised her eyes to the scaffolding before her. Nothing.
A startled gasp escaped her lips when she backed into something hard that wasn’t wall. Judging by the size of it, it certainly wasn’t her brother either. Oh holy man!
“Hello, little pigeon.”
She spun around nearly losing her balance. When she finally steadied herself she was nose to chest with the beautiful man. Well that was who she assumed it was and craned her neck to look up at him. He was abnormally tall and she took a step back to look at him properly. She still had to look way up at him but at least it didn’t feel like she was breaking her neck to do so.
She had been way off moments earlier when she thought he was merely beautiful. He had a face that would make Aphrodite cry in longing. Not to mention a body to make a saint sin. He was definitely someone to while away the long hours of night with.
He smiled at her darkly as he bowed slightly at the waist like a gentleman from the long forgotten past. His dark gaze held onto hers promising retribution. She stumbled backwards a few feet taking her back out onto the scaffolding. She tried to swallow around the lump in her throat but couldn’t and realized the lump was her heart. It was threatening to leap right out of her body.
As though sensing her problem his gaze lowered to her throat. He stared at the pulse beating erratically there for an eternity. The smile that had been on his lips seconds ago was replaced with a grimace. His eyes took on a light that mesmerized her momentarily before her inner voice told her to tuck her tail and run. Run, you idiot! It screamed at her. Fear held her immobile. Then the adrenaline rush kicked in and her body began to shake. For some reason his eyes on her throat fascinated her a few seconds more before she covered the pulse throbbing there with a hand.
When her fingers covered the evidence of her life force from him he blinked, then slowly looked again into her eyes. Her eyes were huge with fear the pupils dilated fully so that only the merest edge of iris showed in them. He could smell the fear radiating off her. It could be so damned intoxicating sometimes, the fear. He closed his eyes taking a deep breath and slowly licked his tongue over his lips pulling the bottom lip between his teeth. He slowly let the breath out as his lip scraped out from between his teeth.
He could hear her breathing heavily as she turned from him and began running over the scaffolding to the other side of the building. Her heart was beating faster now and so very loud that he couldn’t help but hear it. Why do they always run? he wondered. It only makes the chase that much sweeter. Though he wasn’t hungry her blood called to him. Whispered to him like a siren. She was very lucky that the hunger wasn’t beating at him or she would have sealed her fate by running.
He opened his eyes again when he finally had it under control. His teeth weren’t fully extended, but he knew his eyes would be an unnatural shade of blue almost white from the change. As long as she was afraid they would stay that way. He smiled wickedly to himself. All the better to scare her to death with. He decided to stop dallying and go after her. She was running along the wall on the other side of the building now thinking she was going to make the window at the rear of the building. She couldn’t be more wrong.
With a preternatural speed he took a different path to the window and cut her off. She ran right into him, lost her balance for sure this time and landed on her backside. Stunned for a moment she sat there breathless before looking up and finding him standing over her. His arms were crossed over his chest as he stood looking down at her.
“Did you miss me, Pigeon?” Reaching out a hand to help her up, he growled when she scrambled away from him like a little crab. He had to give her credit though, she had yet to scream. Usually by now his prey would be screaming their bloody heads off. He smiled at his own pun. She was up on her feet again running along the wall towards the front of the building. Again she would make him chase her. She was beginning to really try his patience, this one.

vampires continued

He was about to take another path to cut her off again when he noticed a gap in the scaffolding and decided he’d had enough of this cat and mouse game. He caught her by the back of her leather coat and pulled her back against him. Her feet were dangling above the metal walk by at least a foot and a half. She made to kick him and he gave her a small shake before wagging a long finger in her face. She smacked his finger away from her face.
“Put me down, you great lout!” She struggled against the arm he wrapped around her slender waist.
“Now, Pigeon, you are making me feel as though you don’t like me.” His voice was soft in her ear. His warm breath fluttered against her neck giving her shivers. He caught both her hands and held them in one of his.
“I will let you down if you promise not to run again. Surely you know I would catch you anyway and I won’t be so nice next time.” His lips were close to her ear as he spoke. He couldn’t help breath her scent into his lungs. She still smelled deliciously of fear but anger had added itself to the mix. It was very intoxicating indeed. He felt the shiver go through her body when his lips brushed the sensitive area beneath her ear when he spoke.
He held her against his hard body for several more minutes until she acquiesced. Just to be irritating he held onto her a moment longer before placing her feet on the walkway. No sooner had her feet touched the ground then she whirled on him yelling something at him that he didn’t quite catch while punctuating each word with a slap. He would have laughed at her audacity had he not been in such a foul mood to begin with. The theft of his personal belongings had only contributed to it. Making him well and truly piqued.
He wrapped a long fingered hand around each arm above the elbows then lifted her up so she was eye to eye with him. Heaven above she was enough to make a saint sin he thought to himself. Heaven knew he was no saint. He mirrored her thoughts of earlier though his had a completely different meaning. She kicked out at him again. This time the thick sole of her lug boot made contact with his leg just below the knee. He didn’t even groan damn him. Neither did he put her down. She hauled the leg back preparing to give another kick when he shook her almost hard enough to make her teeth rattle.
“Stop that.” he ground out. “I swear to heaven woman I have never wanted to do violence to a female before in my very long life, but you are pushing my limits.” He honestly had never met a woman that didn’t cower at his feet when he was in the midst of the change like he was now. Even when he was human he had never had problems with women like he was having with this one.
He stopped his brooding when he felt her stiffen beneath his hands. She finally had ceased her assault on his person and truly looked at him. She stared into his eyes or rather at his eyes. They were no longer the deep blue they had been when they were first face to face. They were now almost white the pupil a tiny pinpoint in the center of the unnatural iris. Her eyes widened in astonishment. There was no fear in the depths of her eyes that he could make out only curiosity now. He was slightly curious to see if she would cry out in fear if he let the change take him completely while holding her thus. No. He was becoming tired of this game and only wanted his belongings so he could go about his way.
“Pigeon, I will let you go only once more. Do not try me. Do you understand?” She nodded. “I am not toying with you.” He bared his teeth in a snarl that he tried to pass off as a tight smile.
Oh, holy man, he’s sexy even when he’s pissed she thought. His voice was very gruff at this point but still had the ability to turn her insides to mush. She couldn’t place the accent. It wasn’t one she had ever heard before. But she knew she wanted to hear more of it.
He placed her feet on the walkway once again with more gentleness than she probably deserved. She rubbed her upper arms where his hands had held her. She was sure they would hold the imprint of his large hands for days to come. Her eyes were cast down hiding her thoughts from him. He wasn’t so sure he liked that or not. It gave her the appearance of meekness. She was anything but meek. She was a little hellion.
Her gaze traveled to his shoes taking in the black matte leather shoe then moved on to the denim clad legs that seemed to go on for days. He certainly was a tall glass of water. His jeans were black and faded in all the right places. Especially...get your head out of the gutter she reprimanded herself. Her gaze hesitated a moment longer below his belt then continued up his torso. His waist was trim. She could see the six pack beneath the snug fitting cotton shirt. The higher her eyes traipsed the dryer her mouth became. Her fingers longed to reach out and stroke the muscles of his chest. Yes, that red shirt definitely hugged his body to perfection. It should be illegal to look that good.
He stood patiently while she looked him over. He was used to this type of attention from women. They saw the beauty on the outside but failed to see the torment that lived within. He cleared his throat politely drawing her attention back to his face. She looked into his eyes but was slightly distracted when he rubbed his jaw with a knuckle. Her eyes focused on the bunched muscle of his biceps then. He wasn’t overly muscular like one of those tiny brained weight lifters but he was very nicely defined.
Their eyes met and she found his were again the dark blue she had first seen. The pupils were still tiny points and she vaguely thought that unusual. They should have been dilated if only the tiniest bit due to the lack of any real light inside the building. Later she would contemplate that when he was gone.
He didn’t seem overly interested in her and it tweaked her a little. She didn’t know that he’d had plenty of time to observe her when she was hiding above him here on the scaffolding. He had perfect night vision even on the blackest of nights. It was practically daylight for him inside this building. She had seemed like a tiny little bird perched up there hiding in the shadows.
When he trailed the boy into the abandoned building he had known right away that there was another occupant in residence. He entered the open door quietly. Listening for the boys heavy breathing. He heard them argue above him but didn’t give it away. He felt surprise was always the best bet. A sharp sound like a slap was heard then a growl a whispered hiss from the female again then the metal walkway began to make a soft pinging noise. He knew they were on the move again.
He didn’t know why he called out to the boy. The boy didn’t stop but the girl did. She seemed to freeze above him then quickly crouch down from view.
Now here he was with the hellion born of a scaredy cat. No boy. No personal items. He wanted to hit something.
“Where did the boy go?” His voice was rough. He couldn’t help it.
“Huh?” She squeaked.
“Where did the boy go?” he asked again patiently.
“What boy?” she asked innocently. She looked as if she were confused by his question. He couldn’t sense any deceit in her at the moment.
“The boy I followed into this building. The one you were running through the rafters with trying to get away. That boy.”
“Oh. That was my brother. He’s not a boy though, he’s twenty. He acts like he’s twelve most of the time though.” She gave him plenty of information but not that which he wanted to know.
“Where did he go, this highly experienced man of twenty?”
“I don’t know. He’s not very reliable, you should know. What do you want with him?”
He groaned. He didn’t think she quite got the way this interrogation was supposed to go. He was the one asking the questions here. Briefly he thought he liked her better when she was scared to death of him.
“He has something of mine that I want back.” he ran fingers through his hair in frustration before continuing, “Will he come back here looking for you?”
“Perhaps in a day or two.” her eyes widened at the look on his face, “What? I told you he wasn’t very reliable!”
“Look little pigeon, for your sake you better hope he comes back before that.” He took a menacing step towards her.
“Stop calling me that! I’m not a bird!” She didn’t back away when he came even closer to glare down at her. She stood her ground not giving in to the fear that wanted desperately to escape. Her eyes glared hotly right back at him. His eyes were taking on the feral gleam again that had sent her running earlier.
“Pigeon, I don’t think you see the eminent danger you are in right now.” he hissed. The accent became thicker the angrier he became she noticed. She also noticed the blue of his irises becoming opaque again. That wasn’t the only changes happening to him. His perfect white teeth were different. The size of his eye teeth was substantially longer and seemed to her much sharper. This couldn’t be good at all. Oh, holy man!
“You’re a...” she didn’t finish her thought as he now had her pinned against the wall a hand on either side of her head.
“That’s right pigeon. I am.” his voice was like warm velvet over her skin. He confirmed her unspoken guess without putting a name to it himself. He was trying to hold on to his control trying to scare her just enough to make her think. But she smelled so damn good. Not fear this time. Just pure undiluted adrenalin. He was bent down leaning against the wall to look her in the eye as he spoke to her. He leaned closer placing his cheek against hers to inhale more of her scent. Heaven help them if desire should come into this. He didn’t know if he would be able to deny that hunger. It had been so long since he had indulged in that appetite.
She trembled delicately when his breath feathered her ear. Her hands reached for him. Whether it was to pull him closer or push him away she wasn’t entirely positive. But she heard a moan and didn’t know which one of them it came from. Her palms pressed against his chest.
“Ah, little pigeon, you smell so delicious I could eat you up.” he groaned.
When the words sank in to her muddled brain she jumped as though coming out of a dream. That was when her hands on his chest began pushing him away in earnest. She felt the rumble in his chest before the deep sound of laughter hit her ears. He snapped his teeth together next to her exposed neck before he said, “That’s better. Safer for the both of us.” He scraped his teeth over the delicate white skin below her ear in a silent warning. It was a bad move. He knew it in a heartbeat. Her heartbeat. It accelerated beneath his lips. Pulsing wildly. Taunting him.
He growled low in his throat when her fingers clenched digging her nails into his chest. She wasn’t shoving him away any longer. This was very bad indeed. He slid his tongue over the scrape feeling her heart beating madly. Her blood sang to him. He couldn’t help himself. He placed his hands under her arms and dragged her soft body hard against his own. She wrapped her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck.
She showed no hesitation or lack of enthusiasm. She held onto him tightly kissing him full on the mouth. There was no revulsion at what he was at how he looked. She accepted him as he was. His hands slid down her back to cup her buttocks then slid under her thighs. His fingers contacted bare skin where her tights stopped and her skirt fell away from her legs. He tightened his grip on her naked thighs pulling her hips closer to him. His hands glided up her thighs to her buttocks again insinuating themselves under her panties to kneed the firm rounded flesh there.
He felt the heat from between her legs as he pressed her core more firmly against his rock hard stomach. She moan into his mouth from the sharp thrill of their bodies touching so intimately. Vaguely she thought this was insane but couldn’t stop herself. Later she would think about it and wonder what he had done to her to make her so wanton but right now it felt to damn good to worry about it.
Her heat seeped into him where their bodies touched. Even though their skin didn’t touch he could feel her heat wrapping itself around him. Pulling him in. He could smell her and she was like an addictive drug that he couldn’t put down. The need to sink himself into her was so strong he pulled his head back away from her throat. She didn’t stop kissing him though. She placed several kisses along his jaw and down his throat.
His breathing was so heavy she felt each breath he took where their bodies were in such intimate contact. Each breath sent pulses through her body nearly igniting her. She thought she might well embarrass herself if he kept pressing against her like that.
He came to his senses when he felt her teeth against his throat. It was only a tiny n** of his skin but it was enough to wake him up. He slid his hands down her legs which were wrapped around him to circle her ankles at his back. He began to untangle himself from her.
“Release me.” his voice was strained even to his own ears. She continued to hold him close kissing his neck. “Pigeon, if you don’t release me now, you will soon be very sorry.” Letting go of her ankles he grasped her hands from his shoulders and pulled her roughly from him when he felt her teeth brush his neck again.
He had to assume that she didn’t know she had been playing with fire when she nipped him with her teeth. She couldn’t possibly know what biting him would have done to him. He had to stop this insanity before he did something they both would regret when it was over.
He practically dropped her to the metal walkway he let go of her so quickly. He turned his back to her. His breath rasped in his throat as he tried to gain control. His hands shook as he shoved them forcefully through his hair. Cold sweat broke out over his body. He had never let himself get so close to the change without giving in. The way this was tearing him apart inside he didn’t see it happening again anytime soon.
Damn, he was peevish. Before she could catch her breath from his first little lesson, he snatched her up by the front of her jacket with one hand and dangled her over the scaffolding. Though she was reasonably sure he wouldn’t kill her before he could get his precious things back, she wrapped her hands around his wrist in a death grip to be sure. He let her hang there for a moment before he spoke.
“I will give you three days to bring my belongings back to me. My address is in the notebook inside the bag. If I don’t hear from you in three days, I will come looking for you.” he pulled her face close to his before continuing, “ My advice, pigeon, don’t make me come looking for you.” With that he pulled her back to safety and shoved her against the wall with enough force that it knocked the breath from her. She closed her eyes and winced at the contact. When she opened her eyes again he was gone.
She slid down the wall into a heap heaving a sigh of relief. She couldn’t believe what she had just seen. She pinched herself to she if she had been dreaming. No, no such luck.

Galen was well and truly pissed. He wanted to stay there and wait for the insolent bugger to return and give him the thrashing he deserved. But he was needed back at Romani’s to cook this evening. He was fuming by the time he reached the club. In all his years on this planet no one had ever dared to take something from him. This was new territory for him. One he didn’t really want to explore.
Speaking of something new, what the hell was up with his reaction to that little chit? He was positive he had intended to only frighten her not to almost ravish her. But when she wrapped herself around him like that he nearly lost his head. Even now, he could still feel the lustful craving for her body. Her scent still clung to him. He needed to shower. That would get her out of his head. He was sure of it. Well, it seemed like a good place to start.
He meticulously removed his clothing and placed it folded into the clothes hamper sitting in his bedroom by the door leading to the bathroom. He was strange that way. He was somewhat of a neat freak. Sometimes he would wonder if he had been like that when he was alive or had he picked that trait up along with the others when he was changed. It annoyed him sometimes as well. It limited him. He would be compelled to stop and fix things that were out of place no matter what he was doing at the time. He could be distracted by puzzles. Not able to stop till he figured it out. There had been a time when he had to count everything he came upon. It took him many centuries to curb that compulsion. For some reason though he couldn’t get past the neatness. But he supposed there were worse things in life than neatness.
He stepped under the blast of water letting it take away the haunt of her. He stood beneath the spray for several minutes before he began to wash. The heat from the water soaked into his skin making him feel most alive. It was very late winter now and the sun set early bringing the chill of evening. It was one of the things he didn’t like about the north west U.S. The seasonal chill made his body lethargic. He tired easily in the cold. Though the longer nights let him be active more hours than the summer ones they sapped his strength. The hot shower rejuvenated him nicely.
He stayed in the glass enclosed shower some minutes longer letting the hot water pulse down on his head. Even after several decades with hot running water it never got old for him to just stand and feel it run over him. He loved this century with all its modern advances. He appreciated having hot water at the turn of a knob or lifting of a lever. So much easier than cutting wood, making a fire, carrying water in to the fire and waiting for it to heat. Children of the day knew nothing of hardship nor appreciated their good fortune. He supposed if he had been born with these luxuries he would take them for granted also.
When he finally shut the water off every surface in the room was covered with condensation. He ran the water so hot a thick steam filled the large bathroom. The glass separating the shower from the rest of the room was fogged along with the large mirror over the sink. It would take forever for the steam to dissipate from the room not to mention getting the mirror to stay clear. But it wasn’t like he was going to use that mirror any time soon. He hadn’t been able to see himself now in over 550 years. It was no great loss to him. He remembered what he looked like. Well, ok, maybe he didn’t really remember so much as was told regularly what he looked like. His hair was long enough that he usually wore it back in a ponytail at the base of his head. He could see it. Raven black. Nothing wrong with black hair. Unless you were a female, an actor, or lived in California. Then you wanted blonde hair of course. He found that boring really. Oh, he had been charmed by it at first but when it became what everyone wanted it got old very fast.
His eyes were blue with thick black lashes. When he was alive he didn’t really pay much attention to eye color. They were blue, brown, green, whatever. But women seemed to get weird over his eyes. They would stare at him period but his eyes always brought them back for a second and third glance. He wondered if their appeal came from being vampire. After all when he changed they mesmerized his victims. A man that frequented his restaurant told him once that he had bedroom blues. He later found out that the man was flirting with him. So many things changed with the passing years but many stayed the same. In the past it was just kept behind closed doors. Americans were so bold. He didn’t mind the complement, but he didn’t encourage it.
He was dark complected and so looked as if he had a perpetual suntan. Which helped him blend in with the crowd. He rubbed a thick towel over his arms and down his chest soaking up the beaded water. Thankfully he wasn’t covered with an abundance of body hair. He was muscular from doing much of the physical labor in his club. He unloaded the trucks when they came several times weekly and put everything away. It was the neat freak thing again. No one took offense, they just knew it was one of his weird quirks. Aside from manual labor he was unnaturally strong because of what he was.
At 6' 10" he towered over most. He felt a giant in a world of tiny people. He contemplated basketball at one point in time. But he wasn’t a very good team player. So it didn’t work out. Besides that he was too aggressive when it came to competition. He liked to win. Always.
He finished towel drying his hair then hung the towel on the rack and walked naked out into his bedroom. As soon as he stepped into the room he could smell her scent on his discarded clothing. A growl rumbled in his throat. He had blocked this afternoon from his mind for those few short moments in the shower. Now the pique came back in full force. He wanted his belongings back pronto.
He didn’t care about the $2500 in the money clip tucked in the small inside pocket. Nor did he care about the PDA or the laptop. He could give two shits about them. No, he wanted the pocket watch and the notebook. He would tear that boy limb from limb if he didn’t get them back.
Why didn’t he follow him instead of playing cat and mouse with his sister? He could have trailed the kid on the scent of his adrenaline high alone for blocks. No, he had to stay and torment the little chit. If the boy had any sense of loyalty at all for his sister, he wouldn’t have left her there alone to get caught for something he did.
Perhaps, Galen thought, I should teach him that lesson as well. He would have stayed to protect his sister no matter what the gain or loss.
He dressed himself in a black suit, charcoal grey dress shirt, red silk tie. Brushed his hair back into his customary ponytail and secured it with a leather thong. Picked up the only piece of white clothing he owned, a chefs coat, and took the old open freight elevator up to the office of his restaurant.
It was a Monday evening, so the place wouldn’t be all that busy tonight. Which was why his chef even considered letting him into his own kitchen. Galen would do some inventory and other paperwork before he would go greet and seat some of the patrons. He had regulars throughout the week that he would occasionally step out to chat with. He never thought himself much of a people person before. That had probably been for the best in the early years. He wasn’t very good company back then. Considering he ended up drinking most of the unlucky buggers who stayed too long in his company.
The evening passed quickly for the most part. Until he had some heated words with Grigori about a fiasco from earlier in the day. Galen tried his hand at souffle and it didn’t turn out as planned. Grigori yelled that he needed to get some finesse with his hands. Souffle was delicate and Galen was a barbarian. Of course Galen told him he had more finesse in his pinky than Grigori possessed in his entire body and that he could give him names of women who would attest to the fact. Grigori told him to take his uncivilized behavior from his kitchen.
Galen took off the paper hat he had been wearing crushing it in his large hand and threw it in the trash on his way out of the kitchen. He was scowling darkly, and cursing the fat little dictator that called himself a chef. He should just bite him and get it over with. It would stop his suffering. The little man slapped him with a wooden spoon every time he got a chance. Galen knew when he hired him that the nice biddable facade he put on was just that, an act. But he had hired him anyway and had been called a barbarian pretty much daily from day one. If the little man only but knew how close to the truth he was with that label.
A sane person might say just fire his bossy a**. But Galen was under no delusions about his own sanity. The little Nazi would stay because he was very good at what he did. Besides Galen was getting much better in the kitchen since Grigori took pity on him and began instructing him. He just couldn’t help that he was stronger than humanly normal and when he whipped things he ended up beating them to death. He vowed he would use a lighter hand as he dropped heavily into his office chair.
He fumed silently for a few moments then calmed down by repeating a mantra several times. He studied Buddhism for many years now and found the path to enlightenment not only soothing but also, something he could believe in. He had died a Catholic and had been reborn a Buddhist. He wasn’t afraid of the crucifix nor did it burn him if he touched it. It just held no meaning for him any longer. In the churches eyes he was a demon and damned. He knew he was damned. There were so many unspeakable acts he had committed since his turning he could never atone for them. So many deaths at his hands in the beginning.
He shuddered at the carnage he saw in his minds eye before shutting the memories out and getting down to clearing the paperwork from his desk. In addition to the very successful club he ran he also had a stockbroker that was very good at investing for him. He was extremely wealthy at this point. Money didn’t really mean much to him, but he did like that he could buy what ever item struck his fancy.

vampires continued

NOTE: He books a band called Blonde Maffia. Rap/alternative music. They are a regular popular band on the northern west coast. Three blonde women and two dark haired men. I think they are all vampires, not positive. When Galen talks to them for the first time he realizes what they are and makes the statement ‘This town is going to hell.’

* * * *

When she finally ceased shaking from their encounter, she grabbed her motorcycle from under the tarp she used to conceal it on the main floor of the warehouse and pushed it through the small side door. Clearing the door she jumped on it and started it in one smooth motion. The engine roared as she screamed down the alley. Tires squealed on pavement.
She alternately tried to think of the places where Jase may have gone to try to fence the stolen goods, and worrying about what would happen if she couldn’t find him and return the items to the owner. She shivered uncontrollably at the barest thought of that.
She didn’t bother to seek out some assistance for two reasons. One, her brother could get into some heavy trouble if she went to the authorities, and two, if she told anyone what she had seen, they would believe she was crazy. She thought she was crazy for goddess sake!
A vampire! Geeze Louise! She laughed, somewhat hysterically. Wishing she had a drinking problem. Or maybe even a drug problem. Something she could use to attribute the fading scene in her head to as a hallucination. Sadly she didn’t have either of those addictions. She began talking herself out of what she saw. What she thought she saw, she corrected herself.
It could have been her imagination. She had been scared out of her wits when he appeared suddenly on the scaffolding behind her. She had imagined hearing things before why not seeing things? The building had been pretty dark. Maybe the glaring light from the street lamps had cast a glow in his eyes. They must have been just pale blue and she let her imagination run away with her. Sure. And the reason he had seemed so tall was easy to explain. She was short. Everyone seemed extremely tall to her. He really hadn’t been freakishly tall at all. Her state of fright had given him a sense of height the way he loomed over her like he had. And he wasn’t really all that strong just because he could hold her suspended like that with one hand. She weighed less than a buck ten soaking wet. He must have been a weight trainer or something like that. Nothing extraordinary about it.
She relaxed back in the seat and eased back on the throttle a little. Convincing herself that she had made more of the man than was true. Everything that happened was explainable. Calmer now she smiled.
The teeth. How could she explain them away? Another trick of the lights? Sure. Why not? Or they could have been longer than normal and she likened them to a vampires. Neither of them had actually said the word. He probably just went along with her to scare her completely out of her mind. Never mind that he had succeeded. Now that she was away from him she could see it more clearly.
Glancing at the speedometer she realized she was driving as if the hounds of hell were after her and she slowed the bike even more. It wouldn’t do to get stopped for speeding. She would be in a whole world of trouble then. Forget imagining vampires. She’d probably get thrown in jail.
Though it wasn’t reported stolen, the 1100 Ninja she was straddling wasn’t exactly hers either. It belonged to an impound yard. Confiscated during a routine traffic stop when the driver failed to yield at a traffic light. The plates were run and the bike came back stolen out of state.
She acquired it from the impound yard through a friend. No one was looking for it, but she couldn’t afford to get stopped with it either. So she tried to keep it as low profile as possible.
Reaching her destination she idled the bike into a parking space in the low rent housing complex. The place was really Seattle’s version of the projects. Neighborhood kids knew who’s bike it was so she wasn’t worried that anything would happen to it as it sat waiting for her return.
She climbed three flights of stairs before finding the apartment of the juvenile delinquent her brother spent most of his time goofing off with. She rapped on the door and waited impatiently for someone to answer it. The television was blaring behind the closed door and some kids were arguing in the apartment next door.
She rapped again and received a harassed, “I’m coming! Hold your pants on!” A minute later the door was opened by an older woman in a ragged house coat with a cigarette hanging from her mouth.
“Wadda ya want?” She squinted at El through cigarette smoke.
“I need to know if Richie has seen or talked to Jason tonight.”
The woman looked at her for a few seconds before bellowing, “Richie get your a** out here.” Then walked away from the door. She didn’t invite El in. Truth be told El was glad that she hadn’t. The place smelled of stale cigarettes and there were tabloid magazines on every vertical space.
Richie finally came to the door. He looked kind of embarrassed when he saw that it was El. She never came up to his place. Just dropped him or Jason off in the parking lot then took off. He quickly grabbed his jacket before stepping outside and closing the door behind him.
“What’s up?” He asked.
“Have you seen my brother today?” She cut right to the chase.
“Why?”
“Richie.” there was a touch of malice in her voice. She didn’t have time to play their games.
“I haven’t seen him today.” When she gave him a pointed look he exclaimed, “Honestly!” and held up his hands.
Truthfully she hadn’t expected Jason to be here. Had hoped, but known it wouldn’t be that easy. It was never easy when it came to locating Jase. He could fall off the face of the earth for days. Then reappear like nothing ever happened. Usually she knew he would be with one of his friends. Richie was the first one he ran to. Most of the time they were together when Jase was stirring up trouble.
“Do you know Mike’s number?” She asked hopefully.
“Yeah. But it was disconnected a few days ago.” He informed her.
“What about Lee’s?”
He rattled off the digits and she punched them into her cell phone. It rang six times and she was afraid no one was going to answer. On the seventh ring it was picked up mid-ring. She felt a moment of relief. It was short lived though when she found out that Jase hadn’t been seen there either.
She doubted seriously that he was seen at Mike’s either. She didn’t want to waste the time trying to find Mike’s house only to be told no he wasn’t there. But she didn’t want to leave any rock unturned. She had to find her brother.
She believed the man when he said she didn’t want him to have to come looking for them. He was intimidating as hell. She wanted to find his precious “things” and get them back to him. She wanted him off her back.
“Can you give me directions to Mike’s?”
An hour later she was feeling slightly agitated and depressed. He brother wasn’t anywhere to be found. She had three days to find him and the mad man’s belongings. She refused to think what would happen if she failed. She would wait to start panicking until she was down to the wire.
It was 9:45 p.m. on Monday. She had till Thursday evening. At least she hoped he wasn’t counting today in those three days. There wasn’t much left of it. She had to work tomorrow and that would take up several precious hours that she should use to find Jason.
It was late when she made it home. For several minutes she let herself hope that Jason would be inside waiting for her. Empty hopes. He was hiding out somewhere. Not even aware of the havoc he was causing.
As she was waiting for sleep to claim her, the thought that he had left her to face his music alone pained her. She couldn’t believe he would do that to her. And on top of leaving her there alone he didn’t have the decency to come back to check if she was alright. The man could have murdered her for pity’s sake!

* * * * * *

She woke up early the next morning, having spent a lousy night tossing and turning. Worrying what she would do if Jase didn’t show up in the next day or so. Surely the man couldn’t hold her responsible for the actions of her brother? Could he? What would he do to her if he did?
Instead of laying there worrying any further, she decided to get ready and leave for work early. She had an idea of where to look next. Her brother would undoubtedly take whatever was in that mysterious duffel and try to pawn it somewhere. She knew of a few pawn shops in the area. She would try them today.
It was too early in the morning for them to be open on her way to work. She decided to skip lunch and leave work early to start the hunt. Perhaps she would get lucky and be dispatched to a place near one today.

* * * * *

Galen woke up on the wrong side of the bed at noon that day. He was surly with anyone unlucky enough to get too close to him. He growled at the hostess when she asked him a question. Then sent a new waitress into a crying fit.
He was in a fine fit of rage by the time the evening came. No one said a word to him by then. Except for Grigori of course. He gave as good as Galen dished out. He didn’t know how close he came to Galen draining him at one point during the evening. Grigori knew what buttons to push and he did it with great relish.
Galen was standing over Grigori shouting at him when the hostess walked into the kitchen. She stood there quietly looking frightened. Galen stopped yelling and looked at her pointedly. Her fear was a palpable thing to him. Instead of the usual quickening of his senses from that emotion, he felt only irritation at her. That angered him further.
“What?” he asked harshly when she continued staring at him.
“The, um, manager of Blonde Maffia is here to see you.” she squeaked out.
“Tell him I’ll be out in a few moments.” No sooner had the words left his lips than she was out the door like a shot. I wish they all moved like that he thought. He turned his attention back to his high handed chef. Grigori didn’t have the presence of mind to even feign fear. He stared Galen in the eye a moment before he turned his back on him to attend to something on the flames.
Galen briefly contemplated twisting the little man’s neck. Grigori was lucky the hostess had seen them arguing or Galen may have done more than contemplate it. He felt like ripping something or someone apart. His hands were clenched into tight fists and he was breathing harder than necessary. He needed a drink.
Sid Murphy sat at the bar waiting for Galen nursing a club soda. He stood stretching out a hand in offering when he saw Galen approaching. Galen took the proffered hand applying slight pressure. The man winced and Galen noticed the small skin colored bandage covering the webbing between his thumb and finger. He raised the hand and looked curiously before asking, “Did one of the girls get frisky with you?”
“Uh, something like that?” he answered vaguely.
“Come on.” Galen directed them to his office. He indicated a leather seat across from his on the other side of the desk. Beside his chair was a small refrigerator that he bent down and opened. He pulled out a bottle of wine with a foreign label on it.
“Do you mind?” he asked Sid indicating the bottle. Sid shook his head no waving his hand for Galen to continue. “Would you like something Sid?”
“No, thanks. I don’t drink alcohol lately.”
Galen poured the dark liquid into a wineglass made of deep garnet glass. The wine was thicker than was customary and the glass kept it from sight. He took a deep drink then replenished the glass before putting the bottle back. He closed his eyes momentarily savoring the velvet feel of it on his tongue. It calmed him slightly.
It wasn’t merely wine. It was a mixture of wine, blood and herbs. Something he had discovered when he was traveling decades ago. It was made by a family of vampires in a European country. They made it for their kind alone. They also bottled wine for humans as a cover for their large vineyards.
He sat down across from Sid setting his glass down beside him on the leather blotter covering the desk.
“How have you been?” Galen asked. Displaying his habitual manners.
“Honestly, pretty good. How about you?” He went by Galen’s example, getting the pleasantries out of the way.
“I had a bit of trouble last evening. But nothing that won’t fix itself in a few days. If it knows what’s good for it that is.” Sid noticed the hardening of his face and thought enough pleasantries.
He snapped the lid of his briefcase open and withdrew a document from it’s contents. Making a show of double checking the article for errors. The man behind the desk drained his glass and set it aside. As soon as Sid left he was thinking about killing the rest of the bottle.
Hell, he could take the rest of the evening off if he wanted to. It was his place. If he wanted to drink the night away, it was his right. Then maybe if he had enough he might be able to sleep without dreaming. Dreaming wasn’t the problem. He didn’t do it often but when he did, it was with vivid clarity. Like last night. No it wasn’t dreaming that bothered him over much. It was what he had dreamed about. Her.
Sid cleared his throat to get Galen’s attention then handed him the document. Galen accepted it then glanced at it long enough to see the signatures. He nodded his approval. He had a contract with Blonde Maffia to play his club on designated dates for the next year. As yet he didn’t have the pleasure of seeing them live but he did have a copy of one of their shows. They were very good. He liked anything with a strong beat and they were heavy on it.
“Thanks for getting them to sign, Sidney. I appreciate you bringing this over personally.”
“My pleasure. You offered an amount the group couldn’t refuse. I wouldn’t let them.” he laughed and stood. “They’re all yours next week-end as previously agreed upon.”
Galen stood and they shook hands over the business deal. He was sure not to squeeze the man’s hand too hard this time. Galen let him know he’d contact him later to set up the specs for the upcoming show.
He didn’t bother to see him any further out than his office door. Rude, he knew, but he was having a difficult time keeping his temper in check. He didn’t want to see anyone tonight. The only person he wanted to come through the front door, he knew wouldn’t be. He would be lucky if he ever saw his things again. No, he would be lucky if he didn’t have to see her again.

vampires continued

He didn’t know for sure if he didn’t want to see her or if he did. He tried to tell himself he didn’t care one way or the other. She meant nothing to him except the means of getting his personal items back. He was making too much of his reactions to her. Making it more than it was. Sure. And the dream last night of her wreathing beneath him was her death throws. Except there was no blood and they had both been naked.
He pulled the leather thong from his hair letting it free and then ran his hand through the thick mass. He sat in his chair pouring a fresh glass of the blood wine. Loosening his tie he sat back in the chair and decided to get drunk.

* * * * *

Elaina was kept busy all day at work running around the city. She didn’t have a chance to even take lunch let alone skip it to leave early. The dispatcher managed to give her an assignment 20 minutes before quitting time. It took her almost to the edge of the city. It would take her until 6:30 p.m. before she would get back to the building to turn in her paperwork.
This day was getting worse as it went. The last assignment didn’t go well. The gentleman was on the phone with a client and he kept her waiting. He was the only one there to sign for it so she couldn’t drop it with someone else and bail. Then when he finally finished with the phone call he made her wait until he opened the package and checked it for damages before he would sign the release form. She was a relatively patient person but she was ready to strangle him by the time she got his signature.
It was 7:30 p.m. by the time she turned in her paperwork and left the building for the day. She made decent tips for the day, but hadn’t made any dents in the brother problem.
She stopped at two of the pawn shops on her way home. No one at either shop had seen anyone matching her brother’s description. The third shop she stopped at was closed for the night. She looked at her watch and realized it was after 9:00 p.m. Damn! All the others would be closed by now too.
She felt so frustrated she wanted to cry. Damn, damn, damn! A whole day down the drain and nothing new to go on. She sucked at this investigative stuff. She was almost as bad at it as she realized she was at raising her brother. She should have throttled him half the times she threatened it. Maybe now she wouldn’t be in this predicament.
She gave a frustrated sound deep in her throat and roared the Ninja down the road toward the place she called home. A niggle of hope springing eternal inside her that Jason would be there to put her out of her misery. He wasn’t of course.
She prepared for another night of uneasy sleep. The thought that she was down to 48 hours kept running unbidden through her head. She had to find her brother.
The last thought she had was of the tall beautiful man that had done the most erotic things to her in the brief moments they were together. She didn’t sleep around like most young women her age felt the need to do. Oh she had her share of boyfriends, but only a select few had bragging rights when it came to sex and her. It took more than a look from a man for her to consider him as a bed partner. But she had responded to him like a cat to cream. Letting him man handle her as if he had the express right to.
She considered that maybe it had been too long since her last romantic encounter. She had to admit he looked too inviting for her own good. She lay there with her eyes closed seeing him in her minds eye. It had been dark but she was able to see the blue of his eyes.
She punched her pillow bunching it up and forcefully lay her head back down on it. Huffing out an impatient breath she tried to make herself think of something other than the hottie that threatened her existence. But all trains of thought lead back to him. Thinking about her missing brother brought her back to him. Thinking about the situation at hand took her back to him. Heck, thinking about the weather took her back to him. It was frustrating.
Finally she fell into a fitful sleep in which she dreamed about him. NEW: May 12, 2008 Like the night before the dream started out with her running from something huge and menacing. Most of the dreams she had were of her running away from something frightening. It was never anything she could see. Just something she knew meant her great harm. She would run and run until she finally had no where else to run. Then she would be forced to turn and fight. But no matter how many weapons she had, she always missed what ever it was that was trying to get her. She would wake up shaking, sometimes on the edge of her bed, knowing that it would be a long time before she went back to sleep again.
This night the dream started out like all the rest. It was dark and she was running down a deserted alley when it suddenly became dense woods with underbrush so thick she could barely run without stumbling. Her heart was pounding so loud that she couldn’t hear anything over the sound of it. Her breath came so ragged and harsh it pained her chest.
She stumbled over a fallen log and found herself tumbling down a small incline. She came to a stop beside the large trunk of a tree that had bushes growing close to it. She rolled quickly beneath the bushes to hide and tried to listen for whatever was following her. Her back was to the tree and she could feel the rough bark biting into her skin through her shirt.
She tried to listen over the pounding of her heart but only heard the swishing of the wind through the trees. Slowly she peered around the tree to see if it was safe to come out of hiding. At the top of the incline she could barely make out the hulking shape of a man. She hoped that whatever was after her couldn’t see any better in the dark than she could but realistically she knew it didn’t work that way. She could only hide for so long before it would be back on her trail again.
The figure stood there for several moments as though not knowing which way to go giving her time to catch her breath. She was slowly losing her mind waiting. Finally the figure moved in a direction away from her. She waited a few moments longer then made a run for it back the way she came trying to make as little noise as possible. It was hard running up the small hill through the trailing multi-floral rose and the bramble bushes. They seemed to grab at her feet and pull her back. The sharp barbs of their thorns tearing through her clothes and ripping her skin.
Behind her she heard thrashing and couldn’t stop herself from looking back. The figure loomed large in the darkness seeming ready to swallow her. She screamed and tried to run faster but she wasn’t watching where she was going, her foot caught in a root and she felt herself begin to fall. Her hands flew out to stop her fall. Her eyes were closed tightly and she braced for the impact of the ground. A large hand grabbed her from behind stopping her fall.
It was fight time. She had no where else to go. Finding her footing she spun on her toes and came up swinging. The hand holding her was attached to a long arm and she wasn’t having any luck connecting with any body parts. She settled for clawing at the hand and pounding her fist on the wrist. With a muttered curse she was flung to the ground.
She realized that her pursuer was human. At least that was a step in the right direction. Usually she never saw her attacker. She braved a look up in the direction of the face. Her breath sucked in and she tried to scramble away. She was looking into those ice blue eyes. The wind grabbed at the long black hair flowing loose around that beautiful face. Galen. Looking harassed and just as angry as she remembered. It was probably because his shirt was torn in several places and somehow she was the reason for it.
She didn’t know where he came from but for a moment she was grateful that he was there. He ruined that feeling by reaching down and grabbing her by the upper arm and yanking her to her feet. The next thing she knew she was naked and falling back on to something soft. He was standing over her speaking in a language she didn’t understand but appreciated all the same. He was looking at her as though he couldn’t look away and hating every minute of his weakness.
He turned from her and she called out to him to come back. For some reason desperate that he stay with her there. Reluctantly he removed his torn shirt and dropped it to the floor. His obsession with neatness forgotten there on the floor with it. His pants found themselves in a crumpled heap next before he made his way to where she now sat.
His hand caressed the top of her head, the fingers sliding through the short soft layers. The color was curious to him. Nothing that color occurred in nature. Why did she choose that red? It was one of the only colors he could differentiate from others. He looked at her face and decided it suited her. She was fire. He burned when he was near her. He didn’t like it.
His hand slid to the back of her head and pulled her closer to him. It was a little rough but he made up for it by massaging her scalp. His lips touched hers and he felt himself ignite in a slow burn. It was all the invitation she needed. Her hands landed on his chest and worked their way slowly up to his neck. They wrapped around his shoulders and pulled him closer. Fingers tangled in his hair. Her nails scraped his scalp and he shuddered in anticipation of other body parts feeling the bite of them.
He kissed down her throat, his lips covering the pulse that throbbed strongly there. A growl escaped his throat when he felt it pick up in tempo.

broken hearts

He’s 35 divorced. Ex-wife is in jail for killing their three year old baby.
“Lisa, not only did you take Bella from me but you took yourself from me as well. I can’t stand to look at you anymore. I can’t bare to hear your name mentioned.” He was turned away from her in the tiny investigation room standing as far from her as the cramped room would allow. “I tried to let myself believe you didn’t do this to her, that you couldn’t do this.”
The anger was beginning to show on his normally calm features and he was gripping the metal ledge of the window so tenaciously his knuckles were white. He feared if he let go of that ledge he wouldn’t be able to control himself where she was concerned. His thoughts swung back and forth between his anger at her for being so weak and the anger he directed at himself for not stopping this from happening. He had thought they were working through her inability to cope with little Bella. They discovered there was a problem about a week after he brought them home from the hospital. At first it just seemed as though Lisa were tired from getting up with the new born to nurse her but at their first week checkup the doctor was concerned that the baby wasn’t getting enough milk and was losing weight. They decided to put her on formula and Aden began getting up with her to feed and change her at night.
Lisa became noticeably depressed then and started dropping all the weight she had gained during her pregnancy. She was moody and snapped at Aden over the slightest things. She would leave Bella crying in her crib for long periods of time until she couldn’t stand the sound anymore then she would impatiently grab her up to shut her up. By that time, the baby was well and truly worked up and couldn’t be consoled easily. She would be crying still when Aden came home from work, her tortured sobs sounding hoarse in her tiny throat. She would be shaking and her tiny little body would be red from the exertion. He would wrap her snugly in a blanket then cradle her in his arms gently rocking her as he whispered soothingly in her ear. Her crying would calm gradually until only soft tired sighs could be heard. By then he would have her bottle ready for her and she would drink it greedily as if she hadn’t eaten all day.
He would look at Lisa who sat miserably scrunched up in the recliner. She would sit there shaking with her hands over her ears staring at the floor. He looked down at his daughter still trying to get all the milk she could then back at his wife.
“Lisa,” his voice was soft without any trace of accusation in it, “did you give her a bottle today?”
She looked at him wild eyed at first before a touch of anger came to her face, “Yes! Aden I did give her a bottle today. She wouldn’t drink it. I tried several times to give it to her.” She got up then pacing her hands flying wildly about her slim body. Her voice rose until it was a shrill yell.
He glanced down at the bundle in his arms when she flinched at her mother’s voice. Bella’s eyes were wide open, her mouth quavered as if getting ready to let out another cry. He caressed the silky soft hair on her head and whispered reassuringly to her. She quieted immediately and finished the formula in her bottle.
“Honey, don’t yell. It scares her.” He lifted the baby slowly to his shoulder to burp her. She was falling asleep even as he did so. He sat there watching his frustrated, tired wife continue to pace and seemingly talk to herself under her breath. When the baby finally burped he stood and took her to her room where he laid her gently in her crib on her side.
He bent low and kissed her softly saying, “I love you, Bella.” and placed a light blanket over her sleeping form. He made sure the monitor was turned on before he shut the door to her room and went back to his wife.
She was huddling in the corner recliner again rocking herself forward and back. When he stood in front of her and she wouldn’t look up at him, he kneeled before her. She jumped when he placed his hands on her knees indicating she hadn’t even been aware of his presence.
“Lisa, what’s wrong? You haven’t been yourself since you came home. What can I do?” his voice was soft as he caressed her knee with his thumb. Her agitation was evident in the way she held her body stiff and didn’t answer him. When she continued to stare at the floor he stood and offered his hand but she continued to ignore him.
He was about to ask her again what was wrong when the anger suddenly left her and was replaced by tears. He stood there helplessly watching the tears catch for a moment in the thick black lashes fringing her eyes before they swelled and overflowed to slide silently down her cheeks. He didn’t know what to do for her. He hated to see her cry whether it was from pain or sadness it didn’t matter. It still broke his heart to see her like this.
Leaning down he wrapped his arms around her shoulders and under her legs then lifted her slight body to his chest where he cradled her as he had Bella. Holding her tight to him he sat on the couch rocking her. Trying to comfort her as he had his daughter.
“I’m sorry, Lisa. What can I do?” His hand gently smoothed over the dark hair hanging limp over her face. It was usually wavy with a healthy shine and so soft to the touch it felt like silk to him. But when he took a closer look he noticed how dull it seemed and there were knots in it in places. That was so unlike her to not brush it. It was the first thing she did in the morning, brush her hair then put it in a pony tail or braid.
He glanced at her clothes and found them to be rumpled and old. He could understand her not feeling like getting dressed up to stay at home but she didn’t look like she put much effort into her appearance. She had been wearing jogging outfits since she came home but they had been the cute fashionable ones designed by some actress or singer. He couldn’t remember which.
When had she stopped worrying about her appearance? He hadn’t noticed. He had just been so happy to be home from work to see her and Bella he hadn’t cared what they wore. Then when he came through the door he could hear Bella sobbing uncontrollably and all he worried about was making sure she wasn’t sick or hurt. Sitting here holding his wife he realized something was very wrong.
He had tried to believe that Lisa’s lack of enthusiasm for the baby was due to the hard labor she went through. Then when she started losing all that weight he thought it could be blamed on her not being able to nurse Bella and it had depressed her. But that had been weeks ago and she still wasn’t starting to feel any better if anything it seemed she was getting worse.
She was trying to talk to him but he couldn’t understand the words through the tears. The words were muffled and disjointed as she hiccupped and sniffled. Bending his head he tried to make sense of what she was saying but only bits and pieces could be heard. She seemed to be saying, “I’m sorry, Aden. I don’t know what’s wrong.” over and over again.
He sat back against the sofa cushion pulling her with him. He leaned his head on the back and stared at the ceiling wondering what he could do to fix this. As he thought he began gently massaging Lisa’s tense back muscles. Her crying stopped finally and she began to relax slowly as his fingertips eased the tension from her body. By the time she had fallen asleep he had decided what he was going to do.
He eased out from under her sleeping form being careful not to wake her. He stood there a moment or two watching her sleep. A curtain of hair had slid forward to hide her face from his view. Kneeling beside the sofa he slowly brushed the dark mass back from her face. He saw the dark circles under her eyes and the paleness of her skin. He berated himself for not paying enough attention to her to see this coming on. This was his fault and he was going to make it better no matter what he had to do.
He picked up the cordless phone on his way to Bella’s room to check on her. She was sleeping peacefully her sweet little mouth puckered up making occasional sucking noises.
God she’s so beautiful he thought. He couldn’t believe how quickly he had fallen in love with her. The moment she was born he had crashed. She had opened her eyes and he swears to God she looked right at him. Right then he knew he would do anything for her and heaven help anyone who hurt her or made her cry unnecessarily.
That thought brought him back to the moment and his wife. He checked the monitor again then pressed speed dial as he closed the door.
It was answered in the other end before the first ring was through. He knew it would be and yet he was grateful they were there.
“Hello.” it was the no nonsense voice she always used when she first answered the telephone until she found out who the caller was. That way she could put the telemarketer’s in their place swiftly or anyone else she didn’t care to speak to at the moment. He smiled slightly as he pictured his mother standing by the small letter desk that held the phone. She would sit in the chair a smile on her face when she found it was him calling.
“Hi there.” he said softly.
“Oh, Aden! How’s my darling grandbaby doing?” he heard the pride in her voice as she called to his dad that she was talking to him.
“Oh, I’m fine, Mom. Thanks for asking.” He decided to put a little levity in the call at first because he knew it was going to get serious quickly when he got to the real issue of his call.
“Honey, I’m sorry. How are you?” she didn’t stop to let him answer just breezed right ahead, “I know you’re fine or someone else would have been calling me.” She laughed softly at his snort of indignation.
“Now, how is Bella doing?” She paused slightly and he heard his father talking in the background. “Your Father wants to know when you’re bringing her over. He can’t wait to start spoiling her.”
“Mom that’s what I need to talk to you about.” He was speaking softly so as not to wake either of his girls. “There’s something wrong with Lisa. I don’t know what it is but I know it’s serious.” He slumped down on one of the kitchen chairs as he swiped a hand recklessly through his hair. He glanced through the arch that connected the kitchen to the living room where he could see Lisa’s resting form.
“What do you mean there’s something wrong with Lisa? Is she hurt?” his mother asked several more questions rapid fire like a military drill sergeant. He again heard his father in the background asking questions of his own. He heard the worry in their voices it matched his own.
“No she’s not hurt. Not that I know of. She won’t talk to me, and when she does I can’t understand a word she’s saying because she’s crying so much.” He raked his hand through his hair again and sighed heavily before continuing. “She cries or rants depending on the mood swing of the moment. She’s lost so much weight, it can’t be normal. I thought she was upset because she couldn’t nurse Bella, but it’s been weeks since we found out and she hasn’t gotten any better. Mom you know how meticulous Lisa is about the way she looks. Hell she made me wait till she had her makeup on and her hair braided before we could leave for the hospital when she went into labor. But now you wouldn’t recognize her, Mom. I don’t know when it started exactly but she hasn’t worn so much as chapstick in weeks, her hair is a mess I don’t know the last time she brushed it let alone washed it. And her clothes...don’t get me started on that.” He gave a disgusted sound then that was directed at himself not at his wife. “The sad thing, Mom, is that today was the first I’ve noticed all of this. Where the hell have I been?”
He lowered his voice when he caught sight of Lisa shifting position on the sofa. He didn’t want to disturb her sleep. Even though he was the one to get up with Bella at night he knew she wasn’t getting much sleep. She would toss and turn beside him in their bed until the wee hours of the morning when he would get up to get ready for work. When he got out of bed she would curl into a ball in the center of it and finally sleep without moving. She would sleep like the dead then. He had tried to wake her a few times to tell her he was leaving but the only response he received was a gentle snore. She wouldn’t even move when he shook her.
Bella would be up cooing in her crib waiting for him to come get her. He would bathe and diaper her then feed her. If she didn’t go back to sleep while he was burping her he would put her in the baby sling and carry her around the house while he got ready for work. He loved having her close to him like that. When he sat down at the table for his coffee he would read the newspaper softly aloud to her. The comforting sound of his heart and soothing voice always put her to sleep by the time he had to leave. After tucking her in her crib he would wind the stuffed bear that sat on the dresser next to the crib so that it played a soft lullaby.
He didn’t worry too much about leaving for work with Lisa still sleeping. He knew Bella would sleep for several hours into the morning and by the time she would wake Lisa would be up to take care of her. He would call the house before noon to make sure and to see how they were doing. Lisa always said everything was fine. What he thought was busy noise in the distance was usually cover noise. She would turn the television up over the babies cries or run the vacuum to drown her out.
He was totally out of the loop concerning what happened while he was away at work. What he was beginning to find out was just the tip of the iceberg.
“Adenson?” His mother’s voice brought him out of his revery.
“Yeah.”
“Have you called her doctor about this? He could probably shed some light on the problem.”
“Not yet. I just got hit with this today. When I got home the baby was crying so hard she couldn’t stop. I finally got her quieted down and gave her a bottle. She drank it down like she hadn’t eaten all day. I asked Lisa if she gave her a bottle during the time I was gone. She said she tried several times but Bella wouldn’t take it from her.” He stood to pace the floor in his agitation. He wished he knew what to do. He wished he had given more attention to his wife.
“Why don’t you bring Bella over here to stay for a few days. Maybe Lisa just needs a break. You can call her doctor and see what he has to think. It sounds like postpartum to me but I didn’t think it lasted this long.” The worry had increased in his mother’s voice at what he had told her. But her suggestions seemed sound to him. If Bella stayed at his parents house he knew she would be well taken care of and he wouldn’t have to worry so much about her. He could focus totally on his wife and do what he could to help her get better.
“Thanks mom. I’ll run it by Lisa when she wakes up. I don’t think I’ll say anything about calling her doctor until I talk to him and find out what he thinks. I don’t want her thinking we’re ganging up on her if it’s a little case of the blues. I’ll stop by in the morning before eight to drop the little one off. Her first slumber party.” He attempted a laugh but it failed miserably and only succeeded in sounding sad.
“Alright honey. We’ll be up waiting for our girl. Your dad is going to have a ball. See you in the morning. Bye.”
“Bye, mom.” He sat back down in the chair looking like a man that was just hit by a bus. He didn’t know what he would do without his infant daughter in the house for a few days. He had to tell himself it was only for a few days. Until they got this problem solved then they would bring her back home again.
He walked into the living room to replaced the phone on the charger and check on Lisa. She was sleeping deeply now. He thought he could carry her to bed and she would sleep through the night but he wasn’t going to move her yet just incase he was wrong. He placed a kiss on her head before going to his daughter’s room to check on her. When he got to her room he found her sleeping quietly. He had intended on taking a quick shower while they both were out but he couldn’t get himself to leave the room. He sat on the antique rocking chair that his mother had given them. She had sat in this chair rocking him when he was a child. She would sing to him and read to him in this chair after he was fed and changed. Now here he was sitting in it watching his own baby sleep.
He had grown so attached to her that he didn’t know how he would wake up in the morning knowing she wasn’t going to be there to greet him. Looking at her so innocent in sleep he dreaded tomorrow. Aden, it’s only a couple of days for goodness sake. It’s not a life time. She’ll be home before you know it. He repeated over and over in his head, it’s only a few days. Only a few days.

Chapter Two

Last night hadn’t gone well after Lisa woke up. He guessed it started off badly and steadily went down hill from there. He had packed a case for Bella and finally convinced himself everything would be fine then left her room to shower. By that time it was after nine and he felt wrung out emotionally. He locked the doors then shut off the lights as he carried Lisa up to bed with him. He didn’t turn on their bedroom light for fear of disturbing her but ended up doing just that when he slammed his big toe into the heavy oak post at the foot of their bed.
He managed to stifle the oath so that it came out a low grumble instead. It was enough to wake the sleeping woman in his arms coupled with the slight jerk he did when his toe connected with the wood. A small scream escaped her lips as she startled enough in his arms to make him almost drop her. He realized what was happening quick enough to compensate for the shifting of weight to stop her from falling.
“What are you doing, Aden!” she fumed struggling to be free of him.
He slowly put her down when he was sure she was awake enough to know where she was and not fall. He reached out and snapped the bedside lamp on to provide some light in the dark room. It wasn’t much in the way of illumination and at the moment he was strangely glad of the fact. She was showing him a side of her he hadn’t seen before. It wasn’t very flattering towards him either. She acted as if she didn’t want to be touched by him or rather couldn’t stand to be touched by him. This attitude could be over looked by him later but he didn’t want to see her too clearly to see a look on her face that he wouldn’t be able to forget ever.
It dawned on him suddenly that her lack of wanting his touch probably contributed to her sleeplessness when he was in bed next to her and why she slept soundly when he was gone. Did she think he was so callous as to expect intimacy from her so soon? He wouldn’t force himself on her and especially not when she was sleeping and unaware. What kind of man did she think he was? The anger took hold of him then and he had to turn away from her. He went to his closet to get clothes for the next day. His hands were shaking as he tried to calm himself. There’s something wrong with her. She wouldn’t act like that if there wasn’t something really wrong. She knows I would never hurt her or belittle her.
When he felt he was calm again he hung his suit on the hook beside the closet door and turned back to her. She had turned on the lamp at her side of the bed. Since she used to read before going to bed at night the light from it was much brighter lending a soft glow throughout the room. It might have been romantic any other time but it wasn’t looking like it would be used that way for a long time to come.
He watched her turn and stalk into the bathroom connected to their room. His eyes narrowed when she pointedly shut the door and locked it. They never locked the door when they were in there. He couldn’t imagine what she was thinking in that head of hers. Where the hell had his sweet adoring wife gone? Who was this shrew that took her place? If someone had told him this morning that his life would be changed so drastically before the end of the day, he would have told them there was no way. He went to work this morning and everything was seemingly normal. What the hell had happened between then and now?
He threw his hands up in the air in a clueless gesture then got comfortable in the chair facing the bathroom door. By the looks of things this was going to be quite a wait.
When she finally opened the door again he was glad to notice she was still showering. Her hair was a wet tangled mess hanging down her back but it appeared washed. She had full pajamas on under her terry robe. That was something else new for him to get used to. Well he really hadn’t expected her to go right back to her tank top and boxers or even the simple t-shirt she used to wear before getting pregnant but damn it flannel pajamas? Ok maybe the ones she had on right now weren’t flannel, but he was sure they would rear their ugly head sooner or later. He made a mental note to search out any such offending night wear and dispose of it posthaste.
She smiled at him when she realized he was sitting there watching her. That stopped his mental tirade. How could she do that? Go from spitting mad one minute to smiles the next? He wondered how many mood swings she had in the average day. And if she yelled at him like that for nothing what did his baby daughter go through while he was gone?. That thought scared him to death. He looked at her speculatively as if seeing her in a new light. Did she scream at their daughter when she wouldn’t stop crying? Did she abuse her in other ways like neglecting her not feeding her or changing her?
How many days a week did he come home to Bella crying, tired and hungry? Too many to be comfortable with. When he was home on his days off he took full responsibility for the baby. He didn’t complain though, he loved spending time with her. He loved her little smiles and the way she held her head up to look at him. Whether she was actually smiling or it was just gas he didn’t care.
The question here was: could the woman who gave birth to her come to actually hurt her if she were in one of her moods?
He was glad now that he called his mother and that Bella would be safe there for a few days until they worked this out.
“I talked to my mom today.” he said casually.
“How are they doing?” she asked absently as she turned down the bed covers.
“Fine. They thought we could use a little break by now with the baby and wondered if she could stay with them for a few days. I said I would run it by you but didn’t think it would be a problem.” He watched her reaction to his news from hooded eyes.
She spun to look at him obviously aghast at the suggestion, “What? Don’t they think I can take care of a small baby?”
He continued to sit there quietly as she ranted until she exhausted the topic. “Are you done now? It has nothing to do with your abilities to take care of our daughter. It’s their way of getting to spoil their only grandchild, Lisa. They also remember how it was for them when they first had me. They would just like to help us out some by giving us some time off. You’re not going to deny them that small pleasure are you?” She stood silently contemplating the idea a few minutes before sitting on the bed to face him.
“I suppose she could go if they have their hearts set on it.” she sounded hesitant, “How long would she be gone?”
“Only a few days honey. We would be able to sleep through the night for a change and you would have some time to go do what you want while I’m at work. Maybe go get your hair cut and styled. Go shopping...”
Whatever he had said set her off again. He just couldn’t win for losing today. What woman starts crying and screaming at you when you tell her to go spend money? He wondered what time the doctor started taking calls in the office tomorrow.
Looking back this morning he had to admit it hadn’t been that bad all in all. His daughter would be safe and loved at his parents house for awhile and his wife had agreed to it with minimal amount of fuss. She had been sleeping as usual when he left so he didn’t have to deal with any last minute change of mind.
His father met him in the drive way to help carry her things into the house but it occurred to Aden that the only thing his old man carried was the car seat with the baby in it. What was it about babies that turned grown adults into blabbering idiots? He didn’t know but he was proud of the little one already and the only thing she did so far was spit up and gurgle when she smiled.
When he got to work he asked his secretary to call the doctor’s office and put it through to him when she had him on the line. He told her to say it was extremely urgent. Then he got down to the work on his desk. He was trying to work out a money problem and lost track of time until Julie buzzed him that the doctor was on line one.
For some reason he felt a nervousness kick in as he reached for the phone on his desk.
“Hello, Dr. Mike. How are you today?” he was stalling for some reason making idle chit chat and basically wasting both their time.
“Good morning Aden. I don’t think you called me just to ask how I am, huh?” His English had a barely noticeable accent.
“No sir.” Aden cleared his throat.
“Well then what’s troubling you enough that you had your people call my people?” he chuckled softly at his own joke.
“I think there’s something wrong with Lisa. She’s having these mood swings and the ups and downs are getting worse. She’s lost a good bit of weight also since their last appointment. She’s not bonding with our baby either. I can’t say she’s done anything harmful to Bella, but I come home and the baby’s crying so badly she shakes. Lisa says she can’t get her to eat for her when I’m gone. Lisa, um,she....” He couldn’t bring himself to tell the doctor that his wife didn’t want him to touch her so badly that she couldn’t sleep at night.
“She what, Aden” The doctor prodded. He wasn’t going to let Aden off the hook that easily. He was going to make him come out and tell him everything.
“She doesn’t sleep well at night and it’s not from getting up with the baby. It’s from me being in the bed next to her. When I get up to go to work she sleeps like the dead, I can’t wake her.” He stopped to settle the uneasy feeling in his stomach, “I don’t know what to do with her. This all came to a head last night and I’m worried about our baby being at home with her alone.”
“I see.” the doctor sounded thoughtful, “I think she should come in to the office as soon as possible.”
“I didn’t tell her I was calling you. When I ask her what’s wrong she starts crying and saying she’s sorry she doesn’t know. I don’t want her to think that anyone is blaming her for any of it. Do you think your secretary could call and tell her that a test was missed the last time she was in? Then I’ll bring her in right away.”
There was silence on the line so long he thought Dr. Mike hung up. He must have stepped away from the phone to check on something because Aden heard scraping as it was picked back up. “Aden, could you get her in here this afternoon? I don’t want to postpone this too long. My nurse is making the call as we speak. Will three this afternoon be okay? We can squeeze her in then.”
Aden let out a pent up breath he hadn’t known he was holding, “That would be fine Dr. Mike. I appreciate this so much.”
“See you then.”
After the call he informed Julie his wife would be calling soon and that he needed to speak with her right away. She asked if he would like for her to call his home instead of waiting for her call. He smiled at the efficiency of his secretary. He told her no, he could wait. He didn’t tell her he had to wait.
He went back to work but couldn’t really concentrate on the task before him. He was becoming worried when she hadn’t called for a few hours. When the call finally came he breathed a sigh of relief before picking up the receiver.
“Hey there, honey.” he said with more cheer than he felt at the present.
“Aden the doctor’s office just called.”
“Oh yeah? What’s up?” His voice sounded casual even to his own ears.
“Something about a test they missed at our last scheduled appointment. They want me to come in this afternoon.”
“What time this afternoon, hon?”
“The nurse said they could squeeze me in about three o’clock. Will you be able to leave early today?” Now she was sounding a little worried. He wondered what part of this bothered her.
“That won’t be a problem. I can stop at mom and dad’s on the way home to pick up Bella.”
“No!” she said quickly before he could go on. “I mean, she said that they only needed to see me not the baby so you don’t needed to get her yet.”
“Oh, okay. I’ll be home at two.” They said good-bye and hung up.

Chapter Three

The drive to the office was uneventful almost pleasant. They talked about mundane things, the weather, the traffic but neither of them broached the true issue that was on both of their minds. The coming appointment was running through both their thoughts only for different reasons. He was hoping the doctor would see the difference in her and be able to tell him what was causing the problem. She was hoping they would just do the test and they would be able to leave.
He notified the receptionist they were there then lead Lisa to the waiting room. The room held about fifteen chairs and all but one of them were taken. He indicated that she should take it then carefully so that he didn’t touch her helped her out of her coat. He stood beside her silently contemplating the other people in the room. There were a couple pregnant women looking at parenting magazines and comparing notes. A few children were playing a noisy game of I-spy across the room from them.
His gaze stopped for a few minutes on a lone man with a little girl. She was hopping up and down between his sprawled legs pleading with him. Her tiny hands were clasped together in front of her chest as if she were praying. The blonde pony tails at either side of her head were swaying along with the skirt of her dress. “Oh daddy please can we? Pleeeeease?” Her dad closed his eyes faking sleep snoring loudly. He groaned just as loudly when she banged her clasped hands into his stomach and laughed. Even though she couldn’t have hurt him as tiny as she was he played the injury to it’s fullest.
When the little girl began saying she was sorry he surprised her by snatching her up in his arms and tickling her. She giggled over his monster growls as he pretended he would gobble her up. Aden found himself smiling at the display and couldn’t wait till Bella was old enough to play like that. He glanced down at Lisa wondering what she was thinking. She was totally ignoring their antics and he caught the scowl she directed at the children making all the noise.
They had been waiting for twenty minutes by now and he could see the wait was wearing on her. When someone came out of one of the patient rooms another was ushered quickly in. Finally the room began to thin out and he was able to grab one of the seats next to Lisa. She was starting to grumble quietly to him about how long they were waiting. He just nodded his head not really listening.
It was nearly another twenty minutes before her name was called and she was asked to follow the nurse back the hall to an open room. At her previous appointments he had always accompanied her and so he followed her into the room. The nurse told them to have a seat and the doctor would be with them in a moment then left them alone.
“You all right?” he asked softly leaning forward and placing a hand on her knee.
“Yes. Why wouldn’t I be?” The words were snappish as she jerked her knee away from his touch. To cover the act of moving away from him she made a show of brushing at imaginary wrinkles on the front of her slacks. When she stopped fussing with that she looked pointedly at her wrist watch then at the door. “What is taking that doctor so long? Couldn’t one of the nurses have taken care of this?”
Aden merely shrugged his shoulders wondering how he was to deal with this woman sitting next to him. He sighed and realized he would do whatever it took to make things better for her. She was his wife and the mother of his child. He loved her more than anything in the world. He would get them through this.
The doctor opened the door with the customary smile on his lips that Aden had come to associate with him. He was carrying Lisa’s file which he laid on the small desk beside the seats he and Lisa were sitting on. Aden stood and shook hands with the smaller man, “Hi Doctor Mike.”
“Hello Aden. How are we today?” the doctor let go of his hand and looked down to include Lisa who still sat in the chair quietly.
“Fine.” they answered in unison though neither sounded convincing to Dr. Mike’s ears. He raised his eyebrows while looking from Aden to his quiet withdrawn wife. The last time he had seen her at her post-natal checkup she had been quiet as well which wasn’t like her. At the time he had contributed it to the early days of parenthood which could tire a lot of new mothers. But now looking at her today he noticed several differences in her countenance.
He remembered her being outgoing and very excited about the baby they were expecting. She would laugh at her husbands bad attempts at jokes concerning what they were experiencing. Her appearance was as radically different as her bearing seemed to be. Normally he didn’t take much notice to appearances. In his line of expertise he dealt with more pregnant women than anything else and he had found that the closer to their due date they came the less they cared about appearances as well. That hadn’t been the case with Lisa she had always appeared in his office beautifully dressed and styled. She had even continued shaving her legs when many other expectant women would have stopped for the simple fact it was too awkward to continue doing so.
The woman sitting before him today though nicely dressed lacked all other adornments. Her dark chestnut hair had been washed but little more than a few half hearted swipes with a brush had been done with it. Her face looked washed out and pale without any make-up and the dark smudges under her eyes gave evidence to her lack of sleep. When he began taking her blood pressure he saw how painfully thin she was becoming under the long sleeves of her blouse.
“How have you been feeling, Lisa?” he inquired as he listened to the stethoscope.
“Fine.” She rolled her eyes when he gave her a pointed look clearly telling her he wasn’t buying it. With an exaggerated sigh she stepped up on the stool to take a seat on the exam table where he had indicated. When she hadn’t volunteered anything else while he was weighing her he decided to try again.
“Really? You look a bit tired. Are you having a hard time sleeping?” He placed the small round disc of the stethoscope against her skin as he asked her to breath deep and exhale slowly. Her reaction to his touch didn’t go unnoticed by him or Aden and even though she claimed the instrument was cold he knew it hadn’t been the cause of her jumpiness. He made a habit of holding the metal piece in the palm of his hand to warm it before using it.
“Dr. Mike, is this really necessary? I thought you needed to take some blood or something...” her voice trailed off as he continued to examine her. The expression on her face was hard to identify. She looked as if she couldn’t make up her mind whether she wanted to yell at him or start to cry. Of course she was tired! Who wouldn’t be with a baby that did nothing but cry all day long? She didn’t sleep well at night with worrying how she would get through another day like the one she had today. She jumped at everything Adenson did. He was so perfect the way he took care of the baby. He didn’t know what it was like spending everyday alone with a screaming infant. When she thought she couldn’t possibly take one more minute of the noise and might do something drastic he would come through the door saying he could hear the crying outside. She knew he blamed her. She could see it in his eyes when he looked at her as he picked the baby up. Of course the baby would stop crying then, she was too tired from driving Lisa crazy all day.
“Adenson,” Dr. Mike said briskly without turning from Lisa, “can you wait outside for a few moments? I’d like to speak with Lisa alone.”
Aden didn’t really want to wait out in the hall. She was his damn wife for God’s sake. He had a right to know what was going on with her didn’t he? He made as though to question the doctor but agreed when the older man made him the recipient of one of his stares. He tried to send his wife a reassuring look but she wouldn’t look at him just stared at the sight chart on the opposite wall. He leaned against the wall outside the room after closing the door quietly behind him. He closed his eyes and lightly banged the back of his head against the wall in frustration a few times.
Inside the room Lisa suddenly burst into tears and buried her face in her hands as she rocked slightly on the table. Recalling the way she had reacted earlier to being touched he stayed a safe distance from her and let her cry uninterrupted for a few minutes. When he thought he had given her just enough time to get over the worst of her crying he began talking softly.
“Lisa, if you let me, I can help you with this.” She tried talking but it seemed to make her start crying harder again so he asked her to just answer yes or no could she do that? Nodding her head yes he gave her an encouraging smile then began asking her several questions. Twenty minutes later he was writing some notes in her chart and informed her the nurse would be in to take some blood.
Adenson was waiting impatiently outside the door when he came out shutting it behind him. He waved Adenson to follow him stopping for a second at the reception desk to ask one of the nurses to take blood samples from the patient in room four. That was the exam room Lisa was in and Aden wondered why he needed blood then hoped he was about to find out.
Shutting the door the doctor indicated a seat in front of the large wooden desk after which he took his place in the seat behind it. He did several references and some note jotting before finally looking across the desk at Adenson.
“Adenson,” he began forming the words slowly so there would be no mistaking them with his accent. “Your wife is suffering from a form of depression brought on by the birth of your child.” He held a hand up when Aden would have interrupted, “It’s not uncommon for some women to experience post-natal depression. Most times it goes away quickly and isn’t even noticed. The mother will naturally overcome the feelings of sadness when love becomes predominant for the infant. Sometimes it lasts longer and can bring serious problems if not dealt with properly. The mother may feel the child is a rival taking attention from her. She may not feel a connection with the newborn for some reason, perhaps a difficult birth or the child isn’t the gender she expected maybe it cries too much, whatever the cause she may feel desperation when dealing with the child. Frustration can lead to desperate acts on the mother’s part and she may do something drastic when she feels pushed beyond her limits while under normal conditions those thoughts would never enter her mind let alone be acted upon.”
The doctor paused realizing what he was saying to the younger man sitting at the opposite side of the desk made his wife sound like a potential monster. Michael could tell the man hadn’t expected this and went on to reassure him that with proper medication she would get past these feelings and eventually recover. This condition was somewhat new and studies were being done that would help diagnose it sooner and help treat it more efficiently. Right now he would write her a prescription for the depression and expect to see her in a month. Adenson heard him say if anything came up that concerned him before her scheduled appointment he should feel free to call to discuss it.
Adenson nodded as if in a daze then the thought from the night before came to mind and he asked, “Should I be concerned for Bella’s safety while she’s alone with her?” Truth be told that scared him more than anything else in this situation. He could handle Lisa’s outbursts and mood swings, but could his infant daughter? She was so tiny and could be hurt easily. All Lisa had to do was shake her roughly when she was upset from her crying and Bella could be brain damaged. He shuddered to think of the many other things that could happen as well.
“I think we should start the medication and while we see how she responds to it you should have someone there to help her with the care of your infant. If she responds well to the medication you could try short periods in which she would be alone with her. Right now she’s going to need help until she gets used to how her body reacts to the medicine. She may sleep more or be somewhat groggy at first so don’t be alarmed.” He wrote out the script and handed it to Aden before asking if he had any other questions. Aden drew a blank still not believing what was happening. He shook his head slowly no taking the prescription that would drug his wife.
“We discussed this and she understands what the medicine is for and that she must take it everyday without fail. If you think of any questions I urge you to call. Here are a few articles on
her condition.” He stood and handed them to Aden as they walked to the door. Aden thanked him for his time and shook his hand again.
After they were in the car on their way from the office he noticed the small white paper bag she clutched in her hands. Both hands were white knuckled from holding the bag so tightly. It seemed to him that she held it as if it were her life line. The desperation on her lovely face made his heart hurt. He wondered not for the first time how long she had felt that way. Which sent him head long into berating himself for not noticing sooner. He shifted gears too quickly and ended up grinding them before getting it to go into gear.
“What’s in the bag, honey?” He was pleased to hear his voice sounded normal and he effected a smile that he didn’t quite feel but felt necessary when he looked over at her. Her smile was just as shaky and she hesitated before answering him.
Looking down at the bag in her cramping fingers she carefully opened the top to pull out a small foil bubble card with a pill sealed inside. She slowly handed it to him saying, “The nurse wasn’t sure if we would make it to the pharmacy before it closed tonight so she gave me some samples of the medicine I need. She said I should take one when I wake up in the morning before I eat anything.”
He took his eyes off the road before them to look at her. He swore he caught a glimpse of the woman he had married and winked at her. “It’s going to be okay, honey.” He glanced at the road to make sure they were still on it then back at her. “Are you hungry? We can go where ever you want.”

NOTES

1. Bella learns at a very early age not to upset her mother when her father is away. Even though she is barely three years old she knows to play quietly in her room until her mother comes to get her. She had made the mistake of waking her mother only one time. The spanking she received that morning left her unable to sit comfortably for hours. She had cried silently in her room already knowing what would happen if her mother heard her sobbing. Her mother told her only babies cried. Bella wasn’t a baby.
When daddy had come home that day and picked her up she had winced when he wrapped his arm under her bottom to brace her in his arms. He had asked her what was wrong when tears came to her eyes. She had merely whispered that she had been bad today. Daddy looked sharply at her mother then and asked her what had happened. Suspicion had laced his question and even Bella had understood something was wrong with his voice. He never talked to her mother like that in front of her.
Her mother had stopped setting the table for dinner to look at him reproof on her face at his tone. “She wouldn’t take no for an answer this afternoon Adenson, so I paddled her butt. She can’t always have her way even though you seem to think she should. You are spoiling her rotten and I have to deal with her tantrums when you’re at work.”
Daddy had put her down and told her to go wash her hands and face before dinner was ready. He had smiled at her but his voice had been strange still. When she finished washing up and shut the water off she heard muffled yelling. She had never heard Daddy raise his voice and it made her afraid. She was accustomed to her mother’s ranting though and usually could avoid it if she were careful. But this was new with Daddy and she didn’t like it. She had stood there shaking until Daddy came looking for her.
When he saw how afraid she was he kneeled in front of her and carefully hugged her to him whispering he was sorry. He asked where she hurt and she pointed to her bottom which he checked. He winced when he saw the bruises that had formed on her pale young skin. Tears came to his eyes then when he thought how hard Lisa must have smacked her to cause that kind of coloration. He crushed her to his chest again nearly squashing her saying he wouldn’t let it happen again. But Daddy couldn’t be everywhere at once and he had to go to work so he didn’t see and couldn’t stop what happened at home while he was away.
After dinner that night Aden played with Bella for a while before getting her bathed and ready for bed. He had tucked her under the covers then sat beside her on top of them. They were propped up on her pillows his arm held her next to him as he read from the nursery rhymes and stories book she held. She always made him read the same rhyme after he was done with the story. It always made her laugh when he made funny faces and silly voices to act it out. When he was through reading she would close her eyes pretending she was sleeping and he would call her a faker then tell her he loved her. She would say she loved him more and they would start the game of arguing over who loved who the most before he would say good night and kiss her. He would turn on her music box and make sure her nightlight came on when he shut the light out before leaving her room.
That night after Bella was tucked in he confronted Lisa in the living room. He hadn’t said anything more after he had found his baby girl shaking in fear in her bathroom. Aden had nearly seen red when he checked Bella’s bottom and found the bruises. He had wanted to throttle Lisa then and there but for his daughter’s sake he had held onto his control. Now she was sleeping safely in her room where she wouldn’t hear what he had to say.
He had found Lisa sitting innocently on the sofa watching a program on the television. She seemed oblivious to anything being wrong with her husband. She was about to find out differently and very quickly. He stood between her and the television to get her attention.
“You’re in the way Aden.” She didn’t even bother looking up at him merely tried to find a way to see around him. When he continued standing there she finally moved her gaze to his. The coldness in his eyes nearly made her shrink back into the sofa cushions.
“What?” she asked. She truly sounded as if she didn’t know what had him so hot under the collar. He could not believe that what she had done to their child today was forgotten that easily. How could she have lost control and beaten her own child that way then shown no remorse for what she had done? Had she even bothered to check Bella when she had calmed down again? Somehow he didn’t believe Lisa had given the baby a second thought afterwards.
“We agreed you would never touch Bella like that.” his voice was strained from trying to keep from raising it. He cut her off when she started saying she had needed the spanking. “She is only two and a half years old, Lisa. She couldn’t have possibly done anything to deserve what you did to her. She’s just a baby for God’s sake.”
He closed his eyes briefly taking a couple deep breaths to calm himself before continuing, “If you ever touch our daughter like that again, I will leave you Lisa and take her with me. Do you understand me?” He leaned down close when she hadn’t answered him and repeated, “Do you understand?” He didn’t sound angry anymore but the way he asked that question made her quake inside. She knew he was deadly serious. He wasn’t a man to make idle threats about anything. His daughter meant everything to him and he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her not even the woman that gave birth to her.
He had left her sitting there without another word and went to bed. When she had finally gone up to their room his eyes were closed apparently sleeping. Sliding under the blankets she was careful not to touch him for fear she would disturb him. Laying there in the dark sleep wouldn’t claim her and she began to think. What he said had worried her. Oh, not the part about him taking the baby if he left. No she didn’t really care about that. She didn’t want him to leave. What bothered her most was what she would do if he left. She didn’t have a job and knew she wouldn’t have anywhere to go if her family found out why Adenson had gone. They would disown her for sure.
She didn’t know what the big deal was. She had only disciplined her when she started to throw a tantrum. She had to learn that what Lisa said went without question. Aden wasn’t around during the day, he didn’t see how bratty she could be. She very nearly drove Lisa crazy with her constant need to be entertained and she was constantly hungry or thirsty. The more she drank the more she had to use the bathroom and the more she was opt to have accidents that Lisa had to clean up. She was sick to death of trying to potty train her. She was tempted some days to either strap her to her potty chair or deny her more than one cup of juice. Actually she had tried the latter once and found all the kid did was whine all the more.
Yes she thought, her animosity towards the little girl growing by the second, this was all her fault. If she hadn’t whined when Aden picked her up earlier he wouldn’t have threatened Lisa with leaving. Somehow laying there seething to herself in the dark Lisa convinced herself that she really wasn’t to blame for how she treated the girl. She began to believe that the girl was out to get her. It didn’t matter that Bella was only two and a half, in her mind the toddler was coming between her and her husband. None of it would have made sense to Aden or anyone else for that matter but it was real for Lisa.
Paranoia was fast settling in around Lisa as she lay in the dark. She imagined she could hear someone talking in the hall outside their bedroom door. She knew they were whispering about her. The more she strained to hear the voices the more obscure they became until they became hissing sounds. Ignoring them finally she squeezed her eyes shut willing sleep to overcome her. Reality slipped back into place and she told herself she was just tired.

Next Chapter

The next thing she knew Aden was shaking her mercilessly telling her to wake up. He must have shook her for fifteen minutes before her eyes fluttered open briefly then closed again. Her name was called louder and the shaking became more earnest until she finally sat up groggily. She yanked away from the hand on her shoulder as she asked what in an angry tone.
Aden was standing by the bed with a glass of water in one hand and her pill in the other. When she pushed her hair out of her face and finally opened her eyes more than a slit he thrust them both at her with a terse command to take it. Not fully awake she snapped several choice words at him while rubbing at the sleep in her eyes.
Ignoring her foul words he made a sharp motion with the hand holding the pill and said, “Take this now, in front of me so I know you took it.” the steel in the command expressed no nonsense.
Lisa glared at him a moment before snatching the pill from his palm and placing it on her tongue then took the water to wash it down. “Happy?” she asked sarcastically.
“Ecstatic.” he returned just as sarcastically before turning to walk away from her. At the door he stopped to throw over his shoulder, “My mother will be coming over later this morning. Be up and have Bella ready to go out shopping with her.” He didn’t give her a chance to reply just slammed the door behind him cutting off her objections.
Bella was sitting in a booster seat at the table eating cereal somewhat sloppily. She dropped quite a bit of the gooey instant oatmeal on the bib she wore but she looked happy enough scooping it back off to try again. He smiled as he watched her learning to work with the spoon. Every few minutes she would want some to actually make it to her open mouth so she would use her other hand to make sure it stayed on the spoon then used both hands to guide the spoon to her waiting mouth. When she saw him smiling at her she smiled back showing off two rows of perfect white teeth. She had strawberry oatmeal smeared all around her mouth and had somehow managed to get some on her forehead too.
He grinned at her stupidly still amazed at the intense feelings she brought out in him. He went to the sink and took out a washcloth that he held under the warm water making it wet enough to wash her face with. He pretended to sneak up on her making her giggle. Holding the washcloth for her to see he asked her if she got as much in her as she had on her. He said this to her often enough that she knew what was coming and shut her mouth blowing out making a rolling brrrr sound as he washed her face. When he took the cloth away from her face her eyes were as wide open as her mouth in a look of surprise. It had him smiling down at her as he went on to wash each little hand when she offered them one at a time to him.
“Are you done, little one?” He wiped the gooey mess from the handle of the spoon then picked it up. He scooped a spoonful of oatmeal up making a circle in the air before her eyes. She didn’t like to be fed by anyone anymore. She preferred to do that for herself unless her dad was making airplane noises and circles then she would open her mouth for the food.
When she finished what was left in the bowl he cleaned her up then set her down on her feet on the floor. She stood watching him clean up the mess she had made on the floor. He was crouched down at her eye level as he did so. He looked at her, “I think we should get a puppy to clean up the floor after you’re done eating, little one. We wouldn’t have to feed him anything else.” he tweaked her on the nose before rising.
“A puppy?” happiness at that idea was evident on her tiny face.
“No. You probably wouldn’t like having a puppy.” he teased her.
“Oh, yes Daddy.”
“No, a puppy would chase you around. It would want you to play with it all the time and try to lick you. It would probably slobber all over you making a nuisance of itself.” He stopped teasing her when she began jumping up and down begging please.
“We’ll see.” He patted her on the head. “How are you feeling this morning? Feel like going shopping with Nanny?” She nodded excitedly beginning to dance around again.
“She said she would come get you before lunch and you two could have a ladies day out. Sound good?” He was readying his things to leave as he talked to her now. A glance at the clock displayed on the microwave confirmed how late it was getting and that it was time he left. He walked to the stairs and hollered up for Lisa to get moving. He called to her twice more before she opened the bedroom door telling him she was coming.
He picked up his briefcase, keys, and light trench coat then bent to place a kiss on Bella’s head saying, “See you later gator.” To which she answered, “After while crocodile.” She didn’t quite get crocodile out instead it sounded more like “crocdile”.
Lisa watched the exchange between the two and felt jealous at their closeness. There was a time when he would kiss her passionately before leaving for work. He would say ‘See you later gorgeous.’ and wink at her as he walked out the door. Now he didn’t have time to even acknowledge her presence let alone say good-bye to her. All he cared about now was the little girl standing there watching him adoringly as he walked out the door.
“I’m going for a ladies day out with Nanny.” she was saying in a sing-song way. She was carrying a small soft baby doll that she danced around the floor with.
Lisa was getting a headache quickly listening to her chatter. Trying to drown the singing out she turned on the television to watch one of the morning talk shows. When a commercial aired she entered the kitchen to get a mug of strong coffee and lit a cigarette. Taking a long drag on the cigarette she inhaled deeply closing her eyes enjoying her first nicotine of the day. The kid was still talking to her damn doll none stop.
Lisa took her mug of coffee and the pack of cigarettes to the sofa where she parked herself. She could blocked out everything but the sound coming from the television for several hours at a time. Another commercial came on as she reached for the pack of cigarettes. The paper of the pack crumpled up when she squeezed it to see where the cigarette had gone. The pack was empty and she had to go look for another one.
The carton that she took from the kitchen cabinet where she stored them was empty and she threw it across the room in a fit. She pushed a chair under the cabinet then stood on it to peer into the cabinet hoping to find a loose pack hiding in the back somewhere. She had no such luck. She began to crave one even more now which is what usually happens when you know you can’t have what you want. Faced with the fact that she had somehow run out of cigarettes she stood there a minute trying to remember why she hadn’t purchased more when she was out.
Then it dawned on her why she didn’t buy a new carton. Bella. She had to take her with her when she went out at the beginning of the week. First she was hungry then thirsty and Lisa had to get her a kids meal from a fast food place along the way. They had taken care of the short stops first leaving the grocery store for last. It seemed to take all day to do her errands when she had to drag the kid along with her. She hated lugging her in and out of the blasted car seat each stop they made. Gratefully they finally pulled into the parking lot of the grocery store she always shopped at.
The day was well on it’s way to 90 degrees with extremely high humidity and Lisa was hot and sticky and oh so irritable. The kid was beginning to whine as she dragged her out of the car seat one more time. Lisa snapped at her to knock it off her voice harsh. When she started crying Lisa shoved the baby doll at her and told her to shut up now or she would regret it.
Her tone must have conveyed the seriousness of what she said to the girl because she quieted down somewhat. She was still whimpering as Lisa pushed the cart down the food isle of the supermarket. The air was cooler thankfully inside than it had been outside but the place was crowded. She had to keep stopping to wait for those people who found it necessary to stop and chat in the isles catching each other up on the last ten years. Then there were the actual shoppers who stopped their carts in the middle of the isle and stood looking at the shelves undecided over what to buy.
Lisa was quickly losing what was left of her control navigating around the milling throng. Her head was pounding like some little satanic drummer was inside it playing for all he was worth. The list in her hand wasn’t becoming any smaller as the minutes ticked by. She had just placed the fourth item in the cart when the baby started whining about something. Lisa couldn’t understand what she was going on about and after a minute she told her to hush she was all right. A few minutes later Lisa realized what she was carrying on about. The kid had to go to the bathroom. Perfect. Just damned perfect.
She headed the cart towards the restrooms at the other end of the store telling her to hold on. Of course the bathroom had a line backed to the door when they got there. Lowering the kid to stand beside her they took their spot in line. Lisa wasn’t about to stand there holding her when she had to go. There was no way she was going to get her clothes wet if she didn’t make it in time. The line moved impossibly slow and the little girl crossed her legs in an attempt to hold it then began to cry that she had to go bad. Lisa told her to quiet down when a few women turned to look at her.
An older lady at the front of the line smiled warmly at the little girl then asked Lisa what her name was. Lisa told her and the woman told Bella she had a pretty name. Unfortunately Bella wasn’t really in a state of mind to chat like she usually did she merely grabbed Lisa’s hand and said plaintively she couldn’t hold it anymore. Two stalls opened at the same time just then.
It was the old lady’s turn now and she told Lisa that she could go ahead of her. Lisa thanked her as she ushered Bella into the largest stall in the room. It was the one provided for handicapped people which made the seat higher than the others. Lisa had to help her onto the seat. Before she had her fully on the seat the little girl began to go missing the toilet.
Lisa made an impatient noise then Bella cried in fright, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” then began to cry again. Lisa snapped at her to stop crying telling her it was all right. She had said the right words but they had been issued in an unforgiving tone that had been heard by those close by. When Bella finished she jumped down and pulled up her own pants. There was a dark wet spot on the seat of her pants from her accident. It was the last straw for Lisa and she snatched the little girl forward hissing in her ear something that made a look of fear cross Bella’s face.
A woman a few years older than Lisa met her gaze as she and Bella came out of the stall. The woman had a hard look in her eyes that was plainly accusing before she smiled kindly down at Bella. If the woman had known her reproof would have been taken out on the baby she wouldn’t have let it show. But she couldn’t understand why the mother had felt the need to treat her child so roughly. After washing their hands they walked out of the restroom then continued out the doors of the supermarket to their vehicle. Opening the door to the backseat she kneeled beside Bella berating the little girl for being such a baby and gave her a sharp smack on her backside. Roughly Bella was shoved into her car seat before they drove away. About a mile from the parking lot Bella started crying for her baby. Lisa realized it had been left in the cart at the store where she had forgotten it.
She told the girl it was gone so she might as well forget about it. Bella started sobbing and screaming for the damned thing then. Her mother told her if she hadn’t been such a big baby and peed her pants she would still have the stupid thing but now it was gone. When she didn’t stop crying Lisa turned the radio up as loud as it would go.
Twenty minutes later she pulled into the driveway of their home and cut the engine off. In her car seat Bella had her eyes closed twin paths of tears dried on her cheeks. Occasionally she would give a sniffling hiccup then a weak cry. Lisa shook her head and mumbled, “Even in her sleep she cries. Never stops.”
Bella continued to sleep in her seat while Lisa took the few items she had picked up earlier into the house. Luckily she slept through being carried to her bed and the rest of the day till her dad came home. The next day her mother had been happy had even been nice to her.
This morning though was a different matter. Bella was unlucky enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when Lisa stepped down from the chair and her empty foray in the cabinet. The trip to the store was fresh in her mind again as well as the episode of last night when she spotted the little girl carrying the bear singing.
“Why can’t you just shut up for a while?” she yelled at Bella. The girl looked up at her mother fearful. She whimpered softly hugging the bear closer to her small chest. “Don’t even start your crying either or I’ll give you a reason to cry.” She made to grab for Bella but stepped on the cigarette carton and it slid across the slick surface of the wood floor. Lisa lost her balance then and began falling. She flung her arms out desperately trying to regain her balance but only ended in banging her right elbow sharply against one of the wooden table legs. Pain shot through her arm as the same elbow broke her fall on the hard floor.
Bella cried out, “Mommy.” and ran to her mother wanting to help her. Instead the little girl received a hard smack before she was shoved roughly away for her efforts. She began to cry holding her bear to the cheek that stung from the slap. Lisa’s hand print began to form on the girl’s cheek in seconds. When Lisa saw it she started screaming at her that it was her fault and she better shut up right now or she would do it again.
Bella stopped crying immediately and backed away as her mother stood up. She watched her mother touch a hand to her injured elbow checking it. Lisa winced when she prodded the sore spot but decided it was just a bump nothing worse. She looked down at Bella anger on her face, “I don’t want to hear you crying again. You better not tell your dad about this either, understand?” Bella nodded.
The phone rang then interrupting the moment. It was Aden’s mother calling to say she would be leaving in half an hour to pick Bella up. Lisa said she would be ready then they said good-bye.
By the time her mother-in-law arrived Bella was bathed, dressed and ready to go. The hand print had faded with the help of a cool washcloth placed on it. Lisa had made sure that Bella understood what would happen if she said anything about the slap as she bathed her. She repeated it to her when she roughly pulled a comb through her hair. She pulled her hair into braids making Bella wince. The little girl stiffened when her mother told her in a harsh tone ‘stop’ then quieted quickly.
Bella was sitting quietly on the sofa waiting for her grandmother when she arrived. Rose smiled at the little girl and opened her arms wide for a hug. She ran to her grandmother then wrapping her thin arms around her neck. Rose lifted her as they greeted each other. After a few minutes of small talk between the adult women Rose asked Bella if she was ready to go. Bella nodded her head yes and Rose asked Lisa where her bag was.
“Why?” Lisa asked.
“So I can change her incase of an accident or if she gets dirty.” her mother-in-law explained.
“Oh. Just a minute.” She didn’t catch the peculiar look Rose gave her as she turned to go pack a change of clothes for her daughter. As it was, Lisa wasn’t much for packing anything for Bella. Aden was the one that put things together before they went anywhere so she really didn’t know what was expected. She didn’t even know where the child’s diaper bag was so she had to get a plastic shopping bag to put a change of clothes in. She didn’t think to pack fresh undergarments for her or another pair of socks let alone wipes or powder. .
Lisa worried that day if Bella would say or do something that gave her away. The crazy thing was, she didn’t even realize she had caused suspicion on her own. The hastily packed shopping bag testified to how uninvolved she was in her daughters daily care. Her mother-in-law was about to start asking questions.
She called one of her friends that was married but didn’t work to meet her at the mall. She soon forgot about her daughter and problems at home as they shopped together. On the way out she had bought cigarettes which she immediately tour open and lit one. She kept telling Aden she was going to quit but the timing was always wrong or it was too stressful at home. Truth be told she had no intention of quitting, she enjoyed smoking, it helped her relax. But she told Aden that she had cut back and hid how much she really smoked.

New Chapter

Unbeknownst to Lisa, Aden had been on the phone to her doctor again informing him of her actions. The doctor had consulted her chart and decided it was time to increase her dosage again. Aden was feeling as though this were just a temporary fix anymore. The increase worked for a few months then the mood swings would start coming back and the erratic violence got worse. He was feeling dragged down by Lisa and her illness. He had to remind himself she was sick and didn’t realize what she did. But she could damn well take her medication daily!
He pinched the bridge of his nose between his fingers trying to ease the hammering in his head. He had to stop by the pharmacy to get her new dose before going home tonight. He called his parents house to check whether they were still out.
His Dad answered the phone on the second ring with a “Hello.” that sounded more like yellow. He must be in a good mood for some reason Aden thought.
“Hey Dad. Just checking to see if our girls made it back yet from buying the stores out.” His dad chuckled softly, “Yeah those two shop-aholics are finally home. I think they must have bought the toy store and clothing shop out of merchandise. Our living room looks like a Barbie convention exploded in it.”
He heard his mother reprimand his father as he handed her the phone. Then his mother’s voice saying, “He’s just jealous he didn’t think of it first. Besides what’s the little sweetpea for, if not spoiling?”
“Mom, she can’t take that all home with her. Lisa would have a fit. She says I spoil her enough.”
“Adenson what in the world is going on with that woman? It’s like she doesn’t even pay attention to Bella. She didn’t have any clean clothes ready for her when I picked her up. I had to tell her to get them and then she didn’t include undergarments or anything else. Does she do anything with her daughter?”
“Mom I usually pack Bella’s bag. Lisa wouldn’t know what to put in it unless she was told.. I was really hoping Lisa would get better at this the older Bella got but it seems to be worse. She isn’t the woman I married mom. I don’t know what to do.” He covered his eyes with a hand then pushed it through his hair in frustration.
“Adenson, how did the baby get those bruises on her bottom?”
“Lisa did that yesterday. She claimed Bella threw a tantrum and she punished her for it. I told her if she ever laid a hand on my daughter like that again I would divorce her and take Bella. The sad thing is mom, I don’t think threatening her with taking Bella away mattered much to her.”
“Oh Aden aren’t you afraid to leave her alone with her? I really think you should get that nanny back. Do you know Lisa tells her that only babies cry? I’m worried Adenson.”
“I called the doctor today. He called in a different medication for her, I have to leave early to pick it up. I made her take her pill this morning. They don’t seem to be helping any. I just don’t know what to do. I don’t want to give up on her mom. I truly loved her once. Anyway, if she so much as raises her voice to Bella and I find out, Bella and I are moving out.” There was a defeated sound in his voice as if he could see what the future held for his family and it didn’t look promising.
“Well you know you’re always welcome here. We have too much empty space anyway. I just hope it doesn’t come to that. A little girl needs her mother.”
Only not that little girl and not that particular mother. She would be better off away from her mother. Rose thought these things but didn’t voice them. Her son deserved a better wife. She had loved Lisa like a daughter before they were married and even after that. She had been a different person up to the time Bella was born. Then their world seemed to start falling apart. She was sick at heart to see her son so torn and she could only imagine what Bella went through daily when he was gone.
“Thanks mom. I appreciate the offer. I’ve got to finish up some paperwork then I’m leaving the office. I should be to your house in a few hours. Love you.” His mom echoed his last words and they hung up.
He sat there a few moments collecting his thoughts before he picked the phone back up and dialed a friend of his that was a lawyer. He wasn’t going to do anything yet just find out where he would stand if and when he would have to make a move. They made small talk for a few minutes before he told his friend that it wasn’t just a social call he was making. He needed some legal advice and gave him a brief run down of the situation.
The call lasted only 15 minutes and the lawyer said he had a good case but he would need to meet with him to get full details and work out the legalities. They set a luncheon meeting up for the following week then said good bye.
He expressed the fact that he wasn’t ready to start divorce proceedings just want to talk it over and the lawyer said he understood. For some reason Aden felt bad even speaking to his friend as a legal advisor. He felt as if he were already condemning his marriage and Lisa to failure by going through with the meeting. But he had to think of the safety of his daughter first. Lisa felt lost to him but Bella could be saved. He had to do something. He had tried for almost three years now. In a few months his baby would be three years old and he didn’t want her to be hurt anymore. He didn’t want her to grow up hating him for not doing something to stop her mother.
He glanced at the silver frame sitting on his desk. It held two pictures. One was of him and Lisa just before she got pregnant. She was sitting sideways on his lap and they were both laughing into the camera. They looked so happy there. The other picture was of the three of them. It was taken in a studio. Aden was sitting holding a smiling Bella while Lisa was standing to his left. It looked as though they were holding the toddler together between them when in reality Lisa wasn’t touching either of them. She was smiling but the smile didn’t reach her eyes. They looked uninterested in the whole affair. At the time he hadn’t noticed it but now he saw the anger and hatred. Oh, most wouldn’t notice it, Lisa had a way with acting lately, but he had lived with her for several years and he knew what those eyes held. They held no amount of warmth or love for either him or his child. He had stopped thinking of Bella as their child a while back when Lisa made it clear, not in words but by her actions, that she wanted nothing to do with her.
He gave some thought to what his mother said about getting the nanny back then decided it would be best. Lisa could go and do as she pleased and not have to worry about Bella if he hired another nanny. He would be able to stop worrying all the time whether his daughter was being taken care of properly also.
He made another phone call. This time to the agency that helped him hire the first care giver. When he gave his name and request he was told the woman that had worked with Bella before was available again if he had approved of her work. He chalked it up to good luck that he wouldn’t have to instruct someone new and agreed to her rehire. She would start the following Monday. Which gave him time to explain it to Lisa and get her used to the idea again.
His heart felt a little lighter now that his daughter would have a protector while he was away. If Lisa had a problem with it then he would tell her it was either the nanny or he was leaving. He was tired of trying to reason with her and help her feel better about things. Now it was about Bella totally and to hell with Lisa.
He finished the work on his desk instructed his secretary of the few items he needed for the next day then told her to punch out when she was through. She looked at him in surprise because he hadn’t used that old joke in such a long time she thought he had forgotten it. She laughed and asked, “Who should I punch out first?”
“Who ever you see fit.” He smiled at her for the first time in months as he walked out the door. She made a speculative noise after he closed the office door. She didn’t know the details just bits and pieces but from what she could gather his wife was having a difficult time with depression and it was affecting him badly. He seemed to worry more lately. It didn’t affect his work habits. He still worked his butt off for the firm and they rewarded him nicely for it. But his easy going nature and quick wit had been gone for quite a while.
She was glad to see something had happened to ease his problems. He was a terrific guy to have for a boss. He would let her leave early anytime she needed to and if he left early he made sure she left soon after. He deserved to be happy again.

New Chapter

Lisa refused his offer of hiring the nanny back. As if it were her choice. He explain to her the woman was starting back again Monday whether she liked it or not. When she made it clear she definitely did not like it he gave her the ultimatum. Either she agreed to it or he was leaving. She glared at his back when he turned his attention to Bella.
“Hey there, buttercup. Do you remember Krista? Well she helped take care of you not to long ago and I’ve been lucky enough to get her to come back. You’ll meet her again in a few days.” He squeezed her to him in a bear hug which made her squeal in delight. She wrapped her tiny arms around his neck and buried her face in his shoulder after saying ok.
She wouldn’t let go of his neck so he sat on the couch and held her close as he watched the evening news. He heard her soft breathing after a while and realized she had fallen asleep. He smiled as he gently placed her on the cushion beside him then brushed the slightly damp hair back from her face. He turned off the television then went to change.
When he placed his jacket on a hanger he heard the rasping sound of the forgotten paper pharmacy bag in the left inside pocket. Damn it. One more thing to argue over tonight. He was staring at the bag when Lisa walked into the room.
“What’s that?” she demanded.
“It’s a new medication for you to try.”
“So what, do you now call my doctor behind my back?” she shouted at him. He was glad he had let Bella lay on the couch down stairs or Lisa’s ranting would have waken her.
“Lisa, you know that other med is only making things worse. You sleep too much when you take it and if you don’t sleep enough you’re moody as hell if you don’t take it you’re miserable to be with. I can’t take it anymore. I won’t let Bella be subject to it anymore either. Do you understand what I’m saying? I worry constantly at work how you’re feeling, if you took your pill or not, if you’re having a good or bad day. Lisa, I just can’t deal with it any longer.”
“Are you throwing all of this on me Adenson? Is it all my fault? You sneak around discussing me with other people and I’m not to be trusted?” She threw something from the dresser top at him. Her aim was bad thank god and it smashed against the far wall shattering the glass in a portrait that it happened to connect with.
She screamed incoherently at him when he wrapped his fingers around her wrists before she could pick something else up to launch at him. She struggled when he hauled her up against him to look her in the eyes, “I’ve had about enough of your temper tantrums. Perhaps I should deal with you the way you deal with Bella, hmm?” His voice had become low timbered and quiet. That and the look on his face terrified her. His grip tightened on her upper arms as he lifted her a little higher and he saw the fear in her eyes.
“Tell me Lisa, do you use just your hand when you hit my daughter or do you find something else to use so you don’t hurt your own hand? How many slaps does screaming get her? What about throwing things?” She winced when his fingers bit into her skin and he jerked her closer, “Don’t cry, only babies cry. Right?”
Her eyes were wide and tears threatened to spill over at any second. She began to tremble and he thrust her away from him, “Consider this your last warning Lisa. You’ll start taking the new meds tomorrow or by heaven I’ll hold you down and make you take it myself. Understand?”
When she nodded silently he finished undressing. Standing there naked in front of his wife didn’t even stir him. He looked at her with raised eyebrows when he found her staring at him. His body was tensed in anger making his muscular frame even more opposing. The vein in his throat throbbed with every beat of his heart. She had never been intimidated by him until now. She was afraid of the man standing before her.
“Go away Lisa, I’m not in the mood.” and he waved her away then turned his back on her.
By the time he finished his shower and got dressed again Lisa had dinner on the table. Bella was still sleeping peacefully. Nanny must have really run her ragged she was exhausted. He thought she would probably sleep through the night.
Lisa was back to her acting. It was as if nothing had happened. He didn’t care how she acted with him, it only mattered where Bella was concerned. As they ate Lisa tried to hold a conversation with him but he only answered with the least amount of words he could. She asked him how his day was and he said it was interesting and left it at that. She asked a few times why but he shrugged it off and tuned her out.
He was thinking about keeping his meeting with the lawyer next week. He had came to the conclusion while he was standing in the shower that his marriage was over. The moment he had admitted that to himself he had felt a weight slide from his shoulders. The cool water washed the dread he had been living with lately down the drain along with his earlier anger. When he toweled off he felt hopeful again. He would give Lisa one last chance. She had till Bella’s third birthday to show him she could control herself and start being a real mother to his daughter. As for him, he would stay married to her for Bella’s sake but there was nothing there for him anymore. He would be fair to her and give her every courtesy if she would act like the mother Bella deserved. He knew it would only be an act on Lisa’s part. She didn’t have any maternal feelings for the child she had carried. He couldn’t understand it at all and didn’t want to try to any longer.
He finished the food on his plate washing it down with the rest of his drink then got up put the dishes in the dishwasher and took the sleeping child up to her bed. He tucked her in carefully making sure she was completely covered then kissed her chubby cheek. He whispered, “I love you, Bella” before going back downstairs.
Lisa had cleared the table and disappeared to somewhere else in the house. Which made him happy because he didn’t really want to look at her right now. He sat in the recliner and watched a movie that he didn’t find very interesting. He was only watching it to give himself an excuse not to go to bed yet. Lisa was the one that usually used the television as an excuse to come to bed long after he had gone up. Not tonight. He was contemplating moving out of the bedroom they shared. It wasn’t as if he would be missed. Hell Lisa would probably help him put up a bed in the den to get him out of hers.
He slumped down in the recliner making himself more comfortable. Flipping through the channels he couldn’t find anything of any interest to watch. He made a disgusted sound shaking his head, “372 stations and nothing of any value on to watch.” He put it back on the Friday night movie special then laid the remote on the seat cushion next to him.

New Chapter

He started a new habit that night of falling asleep in the recliner. Lisa didn’t complain about it. He didn’t kid himself about that, he knew she wouldn’t. She didn’t object when he set up a twin bed in the den either. The damn bed was too short though and he woke up most mornings with a stiff neck and feeling like he hadn’t gotten any sleep at all. Bella asked him why they had a bed in the den now. He told her it was for him to use when he stayed up late working at home so he wouldn’t wake her mother. She accepted the story easily enough.
Lisa was sleeping better with the new arrangement and she was taking her new medication every morning. She was up in the mornings before he left now, some days even before he woke. Her mood swings were gone but now she seemed to be in a daze most of the time. The nanny took over completely at the house when he was gone and the rest of the time he took care of everything else. Lisa basically lived there with them contributing nothing. She still didn’t act like a mother to Bella in fact she had totally shut her out lately.
He didn’t know if the situation at the house was any better now than before. At least Bella wasn’t being mistreated anymore. She and Krista had become fast friends to the point where Bella had cried the first few days when she left. She soon realized that Krista would be back the next morning before her dad went to work. She would ask her daddy several times over the weekend when would Krista be back because she didn’t take care of her those days.
The first month of Lisa’s trial period went by without any incidents and Aden thought things were going to be okay. His wife acted a little bizarre occasionally but nothing he couldn’t handle with Krista’s help. Toward the end of the second month he started waking up to someone talking. At first he didn’t recognize the voice, it had a hushed desperate tone that he hadn’t heard before. He had thought that someone must have gotten into the house some how and he got up to investigate. He had quietly walked through the house following the sound of the voice.
It was coming from upstairs and sounded stranger by the minute. Carefully he climbed the stairs stopping at the top and listening. He had checked Bella’s room before coming up here, making sure she was alright. Now he worried that who ever was in his house was in the room where Lisa slept. He stepped to the door opening it a crack to look in. He didn’t see Lisa on the bed and wondered where she could be. He hadn’t seen her down stairs anywhere when he had looked around down there.
The room was still shrouded in semi darkness but he made out a figure standing peering out the second floor window. He couldn’t make out the words being said at first, they were coming out so quickly. The figure suddenly turned from the window and he realized it was Lisa. She had the blanket from the bed wrapped around her covering her head and she seemed to be having a rapid conversation with herself. He caught bits and pieces and couldn’t make sense of it.
“Lisa, are you all right?” he asked as he reached out to turn on the light.
Her eyes squinted almost shut at the harsh light and she jumped in fright at the sight of him standing there. She stopped talking immediately and stared at him blankly.
“Everything okay?” he asked again.
“Yes.” She sounded harassed as if she were backed into a corner. Her eyes darted around the room before settling on his again. She seemed to suddenly understand where she was again and her voice returned to normal.
“I’m fine. What do you want?”
“Why were you standing at the window looking out into the darkness?” The question he really wanted answered was why she had been talking to herself using that strange voice.
“Just waiting.” He assumed she meant waiting for the day to start. It wasn’t what she had meant at all. She was waiting for that retched woman who came into her house everyday and tried to take over her life. She watched her. She knew what she was up to. Her and that brat. But they couldn’t have him. She wouldn’t let them take her husband from her while she was still here. But they already have the voice in her head nagged at her. She placed her hands over her ears shaking her head.
“Do you have a headache or something?” He asked when she pressed her palms to her temples. He went into the bathroom to get a couple aspirin for her.
“What?”
“A headache, do you have one?” He asked again when he came back into the room but the voice she heard was in her head telling her he didn’t really care anyway. Why should he care Lisa it asked you’re crazy and he’s going to leave you and take the kid and that house wrecker with him leaving you all alone.
“Go away!” she shouted. He handed her the aspirins then turned on his heel and walked out the door thinking she meant him. She was talking to the nagging voice that never seemed to give her a moments peace anymore. Lately she would be awakened by whispering in the night. It was about her the voice inside would say. They were here whispering about you. How they would be happy once they were rid of you. It’s true, it’s true, it’s true. Those words would echo in her mind like a chant. Moments of sanity would bring her to her senses and she would tell herself it was only a dream. But as she was fading back into sleep laughter would reverberate through her mind.
This morning the voice was demanding to be heard and nothing she did would silence it. He’s leaving, you know. It reminded her again. The kid is the reason. You know it’s true. Lisa ran to the dresser and snapped the pill bottle up from it. The only time she had quiet was when she took her pill. Her mind seemed to slow after she took it. A calm lethargy would take over then and she had no ambition to do anything much less think. The voice let her alone then.
She swallowed the pill hastily without the aid of water then sat on the bed rocking waiting for the drug to take over. It seemed to take forever to quiet the now screaming voice in her head. The problem lately was the voice was getting stronger and started nagging at her quicker with each day. The dosage needed to be upped soon but in her state she didn’t know that. Adenson was unaware of it as well.
Finally the voice shut up and she could get dressed. She brushed her hair and washed her face before going down stairs. Aden was at the kitchen table when she walked in. He was eating breakfast and she smiled at him. He noticed she didn’t spare a glance at Bella who sat in her highchair eating oatmeal. At least she looked half normal now and wasn’t clutching her head.
“Aspirin work?” He asked not even looking at her. He was reading the paper that lay beside his plate.
“Huh? Oh, yeah.” She didn’t even remember any aspirin. It wasn’t the first time that he had reminded her of something. She forgot a lot of things recently. It didn’t really bother her much though. The house keeper took care of all the important things. Thank goodness or they would be in a heap of trouble. Most of the time she forgot to eat. It wasn’t that she forgot the food, she just didn’t pay much attention to time anymore and it tended to get away from her.
Life was pretty nice in her haze. Nothing bothered her now. She felt free. There was one thing that got to her occasionally. She forgot why Aden didn’t sleep in the same bed as her any longer. She missed the comfort of his arm holding her at night. She was sure the dream wouldn’t get her if he would only go back to sleeping in their room again. She didn’t mention this to him though.
Several days went by with him being awakened by her strange rambling before he became used to it. After almost a month of it, it no longer woke him. It had bothered him at first because she would act so different but when she came down to breakfast she was fine again. He had asked Krista if she noticed anything strange about her but she said she hadn’t. So he just let it go as her way of cooping with everything.
A week before Bella’s birthday the voice couldn’t be silenced by the pills any longer. It taunted her mercilessly. It pointed out how much time Aden spent talking with the house keeper and how little he talked to her. How he spoiled that rotten brat anyway he could but never thought of her. She had noticed the house keeper watching her several times during the past week. She was convinced the woman was sneaking around spying on her. Just waiting for Lisa to do something wrong so she could get her out of the picture. She would have Aden all to her self then if Lisa were gone.
No, Lisa whispered to herself, Aden isn’t like that. He would never leave me. He loves me. No he doesn’t the voice argued back. He told you before he would leave you. Remember? He didn’t mean it she whispered. They’ve got you fooled. They laugh about it behind your back. It’s true, it’s true, it’s true. “NO!” she yelled. Her shout reached Krista’s ears and she came to investigate.
Krista found Lisa whispering fiercely to herself, “Is everything okay Mrs. Vaughn?”
Lisa whirled around to face her, “Why wouldn’t it be?”
“I’m sorry. I heard you yell and thought you might have hurt yourself.” Krista said apologetically.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you? An accident to get rid of me, huh?” The voice in her head pushed her on. Tell her you know what she’s up to. You’ll see the truth on her face. She won’t be able to hide it once she knows you’re on to her and the brat. Go on.
“I know what you’re up to. Spying on me all the time. Laughing at me behind my back. I know all about it.” The accusations hissed out as she warmed up to the tirade that was coming. “What do you have planned for me? I won’t let you take over my place in this house that easily.”
Krista realized this outburst must have been what Mr. Vaughn had been worried about. She knew nothing she said would calm her. She didn’t understand what her employers wife was screaming about but she seemed totally convinced Krista was trying to take her place for some reason.
Krista apologized again as she slowly backed out of the room. She was afraid she would perhaps become violent and she decided to get Bella and leave the house if possible. The older woman stood where she was repeating at the top of her lungs that she wouldn’t be easy to get rid of. Bella heard the commotion and came running to Krista just as she entered the little girl’s room. Bella understood what that screaming meant coming from her mother and she trembled uncontrollably. Krista picked the terrified little girl up and ran out the front door.
She buckled the baby into the back seat on the passenger side of her little car wishing she could get her car seat but not knowing if she should waste the time doing so. She decided against it then buckled herself in the drivers seat before zipping out of the drive and down the road. She had no idea where she should take the little girl in the backseat. She did know when to expect Mr. Vaughn and decided to take Bella to the park until she was sure he would be home before returning there.
When Lisa was alone again the voice said see, I told you. It was all over her face. Guilt. So what if she does want him, it doesn’t mean that Aden is part of it she argued back. Laughter echoed in her head. You don’t get it do you? The only reason he wants her is because of that damn brat she takes care of. If the kid were gone there would be no reason for him to leave. He loves the brat more than he does you. If you don’t believe me give him a test. Make him prove his true intentions for you. Go ahead.
I will, she whispered aloud. Then he’ll get rid of you and I’ll have peace and quiet again. I’ll show you he loves me more.
She sat down on the couch and waited patiently for her husband to come home. She knew he would pick her. He married her first. She deserved him more. He would see that. He had to.

New Chapter

Krista pulled her car into the driveway right behind Adens that evening when he got home from work. He thought it was strange that she had Bella strapped into the backseat without a car seat. She never took the baby anywhere without a car seat. When she jumped out of the car and rushed to him he saw the worried expression on her face.
“What happened?” His tone was more harsh than he intended but it couldn’t be helped now.
“I, I heard her scream and went to see if something had happened and I found her arguing with herself in the living room. I asked if everything was okay and she started screaming at me that she knew what I was up to and she wouldn’t be easy to get rid of. I think she thinks I’m trying to take her place in your family.” The words came out in such a rush she had to stop and gulp in more air before continuing, “I’m not trying to take over for her sir. I’m just trying to help anyway I can. She was screaming over and over that she wouldn’t be easy to get rid of.” Krista looked ready to cry but she blinked back any tears that where there.
“Stay here with Bella. I’ll straighten this out then be back out to get her.” He patted her shoulder before walking through the front door.
Lisa was sitting on the couch calmly waiting for him. She smiled at him and stood to face him as he walked into the room. He looked angry about something.
“What’s wrong Aden?”
“Perhaps I should ask you that Lisa. What happened here today?”
A spark of something flashed in her eyes before she smiled, “I’ve had a horrible time sleeping lately. I keep having this horrible dream that wakes me and then I can’t seem to get back to sleep. On top of that today I’ve had a terrible headache. I couldn’t think straight and when she came in here I guess I kind of took it out on her. I’m so sorry for it. I didn’t mean it.”
She sounded sincere but Aden knew her acting abilities too well to be taken in by it. He pushed a hand through his hair mussing it. She reached up to smooth it but he jerked away. He wasn’t used to her touching him anymore. She hadn’t come near him in nearly two years and hadn’t voluntarily touched him in a lot longer than that. It was only natural that he was suspicious of her touch now.
“What kind of dreams Lisa?”
“Mostly whispering voices that tell me bad things that scare me. I’ve wanted to tell you about it for weeks now but I didn’t know how. I can’t remember why you moved out of our room Aden. I feel so lost without you there. I know the voice would go away if you were there when I woke up from the dream.”
How desperately he wished she had come to him like this months ago when he would have done anything in the world to get them through this. Now he didn’t have the interest in making it work. He had been living in a dream the last few weeks thinking he would be content living like this. Their family life was a joke. He couldn’t let her think he was willing to take what ever she was willing to give him. He wanted it all and knew she wasn’t capable of that.
“Lisa why are you telling me this now? Why not years ago? Hell even months ago it might have worked. Why now?” He needed to understand what she was offering.
“I’ve been in such a drugged stupor with the different medications I’ve been on that I didn’t know which way was up. Most of the time I don’t know what’s going on around me. Lately though things have been becoming clearer. I need you.” She touched his face with her finger tips. He closed his eyes briefly but felt nothing from her touch.
“It’s a little too late for that Lisa.”
“No it isn’t.” She insisted desperation entering her voice. “I know you love me. We just need to get back to that.” She moved closer to him holding his face in her hands not noticing that he wasn’t returning her caresses. “I would like for us to start sleeping together again.”
She smoothed her thumb over his lower lip before he reached up and took her hands from his face, “I’m not interested in it anymore Lisa. Sorry.”
She looked ready to crumble before him. The voice laughed inside her head. I told you. She suddenly couldn’t breath, “They told me. I didn’t believe it though.” She ran from the room before he could ask who.
He went out side to get Bella and talk to Krista. Neither of them notice the face in the second floor window as they began speaking. He apologized for his wife’s behavior as he unbuckled a sleeping Bella. She woke up when he lifted her from the car.
“Daddy!” she said gleefully. He nuzzled her cheek, “Hey pip squeak. Who’s my soon to be birthday girl?” He asked as he tickled under her chin.
Giggling she gasped “Me!”
He put her down and she ran to the house. He watched her go inside and turned back to Krista finishing their conversation. He was only out there with her for a few minutes when he heard a scream from the house. They both ran into the house to see what had happened.
The basement door was wide open and the gate was missing. Lisa was standing at the foot of the stairs leading to the second floor. He looked at her then at the basement door. He didn’t want to look but knew he had to. He took a deep breath then took the final step to the door.
“Oh dear God.” he whispered as he rushed down the stairs. He nearly fell half way down in his haste to get down them. Bella lay motionless at the bottom. She was laying on her back, one arm twisted behind her a leg bent at an odd angle. There was blood seeping from a gash on her temple. Tears were running down his face before he even touched her. He bent to pick her limp form from the cold concrete floor but remembered at the last minute he shouldn’t move her.
He screamed for someone to dial 911 as he sank to the floor beside her. Krista had the cordless in her hand already talking to someone on the other end as she rushed down the steep stairs. When she got to the bottom of the stairs and saw the baby laying there so still she was afraid it was too late for help. The emergency worker at 911 said someone was on the way and began asking questions that would help the E.M.T.’s administer emergency care faster when they got there.
When she asked if Bella was breathing Krista was about to say no when she caught the baby’s chest move in a shallow breath. Krista nearly cried in relief then but knew she had to stay calm for Mr. Vaughn. He was kneeling over the still body of his daughter calling her name softly alternately with begging God to not take her from him.
They heard the ambulance’s siren coming down the street seconds before the emt’s rushed down the stairs. They began working on her within seconds of arriving. Aden could only watch helplessly from a place out of their way. Krista stood beside him praying with him she would be okay.
No one noticed the mother of the child standing at the top of the stairs a sick look on her face. She was struggling with herself as her child struggled to stay alive.
Krista drove her car to the hospital behind the ambulance. The paramedics had let Aden ride in the back of the rig beside his daughter. They weren’t sure if the little girl would even make it to the hospital. The father sat beside her begging her to open her eyes. He was holding her uninjured hand in his stroking it.
They continued to work on her all the way to the hospital. She quit breathing several times in the short 15 minutes it took to get there. Her temple was beginning to swell frighteningly and they were afraid she would have pressure on her brain from it. When they pulled into the emergency ambulance lane they couldn’t take her in right away because she stopped breathing again and convulsing. They tried to get her breathing again but all attempts failed and she died before they could do anything else.
It was the most horrible thing anyone was forced to do telling someone their loved one was gone especially when it was a child. A paramedic that was standing over Bella looked at the father to express his condolence. He knew it would mean nothing compared to his pain. But he had to convey his sorrow for not being able to help his daughter. Aden was kneeling beside her his brow pressed to her cheek groaning. He held her limp hand in one of his and wrapped his other arm around her pulling her closer to him. He shook his head back and forth moaning oh no several times a lump in his throat threatening to choke him making him sound hoarse.
“I’m sorry sir..” The paramedics voice trailed off not knowing what to say. He never really had to give this speech. It was usually the doctors job to talk with family members. It was obvious what had happened but he still felt he should say or do something to help this man.
The emt’s began cleaning up the rig to let the father have a few minutes before they had to remove the body. The hospital had known their eta and a doctor came running to the rear of the rig. The driver stepped out to catch him before he could bang on the rear doors.
“She’s gone doc. We’re just giving the father a few minutes with her first. He’s not taking it real well.” The driver frowned at his own words. No one ever took this kind of news well.
Krista parked her car in the emergency parking lot as close to the ambulance as she could get. She jumped out from behind the wheel running toward the ambulance. She slowed when she saw the emt and a doctor just standing at the back talking in hushed voices. A hand flew to cover her mouth as a cry escaped her throat. They shouldn’t be just standing there like that. The doctor happened to glance up and see the woman running at them.
“Is that the mother?” He nodded his head in her direction.
“No. But she made the call to 911.” He walked forward to meet her the last few feet. “I’m sorry ma’am.” he began when she stopped in front of him.
“No.” she began shaking her head.
He walked back to the rear doors and slowly began opening them. Aden was still leaning over his little girl holding her in his arms when the doors were finally open. When Krista saw him like that she knew it was true. Bella was gone.
“Mr. Vaughn?” she called to him. He looked slowly in her direction, trying unsuccessfully to hold back his tears. Krista’s tears came then when she saw the ragged look on her employers face.
New Chapter

They were calling it a tragic accident at first. Aden was grateful that Krista had followed them to the hospital. She had called his parents and they came running into the waiting room asking what had happened. Aden was trying to get control and brokenly started to fill them in. His voice broke and he couldn’t continue and he placed his face in his hands sitting heavily in a chair. His mom sat quickly next to him wrapping her arm around her son’s shoulder.
Krista softly spoke telling them everything they knew about what had happened. She felt so sad to be telling these nice people their granddaughter was gone. Soft sounds of crying filled the room. His mother asked how this could happen and Aden was saying he didn’t know when two uniformed police officers entered the room looking for someone.
There was a moment of confusion when they asked if anyone by the name of Aden Vaughn was in the room and he stood up saying that was him. His father stepped forward in front of Aden to address the officer asking what this was about. The officer nodded stiffly at Aden’s father saying they needed to speak with him.
Aden’s mind wasn’t working beyond the point where his daughter was dead and he didn’t know what he was going to do without her. Confusion was evident on his ravaged face when he looked at the officer.
He vaguely heard his mother’s voice whispering oh no oh god no as the officers stepped closer to him. He couldn’t understand what they would need to speak with him about or how they happened to be there. Who had called them? His dad was speaking again wanting to know what they needed to speak to his son about. In a dream he heard them say it concerned his daughter’s accident. His dad was trying to protect him from something but he didn’t know what. The taller officer stepped around his father and addressed Aden, “Sir we need you to answer a few questions about the accident.”
Aden nodded looking from the tall officer to the heavier set man behind him. He didn’t know what they needed to investigate, it was an accident. Wasn’t it? Didn’t he see Lisa at the bottom of the stairs leading to the second floor? She couldn’t have been close enough to cause Bella to fall. Could she? Surely he was reading too much into this.
His parents and Krista started to leave the room to give them some privacy when the heavier officer stopped Krista. “Are you the mother?” When Krista shook her head no he looked at his partner then back at her. “Then you are?”
“This is Bella’s nanny. Was her nanny.” he corrected.
“Was she at the scene?” When they both nodded he indicated that she should stay also. The officer looked around the room then asked where Mrs. Vaughn was. That was the first time Aden had noticed that Lisa wasn’t here. He couldn’t believe that she wasn’t here. But he didn’t really care at this point. He merely shrugged his shoulders.
2. He’s sitting outside at a table in a café reading a newspaper. Lorna walks toward his table on her way out of the café. As she nears his table a feeling of dread overcomes her. It settles in the pit of her stomach like a cold heavy stone that with each step closer to him causes her stomach to clench in worried tension. She knows what this feeling is. Knows what it means and she glances around to find it’s source.
Her gaze settles on the man sitting alone at an outdoor table. He appears to be quietly reading a newspaper. Lorna knows he’s doing anything but that right now. Inside he is raging. Battling a war with himself that he’ll never win on his own. She feels his despair as if it were her own. It cloaks her for a few moments before she is able to suppress it. His sense of loss and pain nearly break her heart. Concentrating on him alone she listens to what is inside him.
He is missing someone terribly and blames himself for the loss. No, it’s not just one person that has been taken from him but two. There is anger there inside him also. It’s aimed at himself and another. Lorna stands there as if in a trance staring at the troubled man. Outwardly he didn’t seem to have any other care than the print before him but inwardly he was a mess.
She could sense things about people. More than most would like. She could tell when a person was lying. Something deep inside her would set up an alarm when something didn’t sound quite right to her. She didn’t know how it worked, it just did. It came in pretty handy in her line of work. She was a guidance counselor at a local high school. Sometimes the kids would try to pull one over on her to get out of class and she would be able to tell if there was a true problem or just wanting to skip.
The man sitting five feet from her was in definite trouble emotionally if he didn’t get help soon. He was trying to make it though his loss alone. One minute he believed he would be able to live through this pain, the next he didn’t know how he could possibly go on living. He didn’t want to continue living with the pain in his heart.
He looked rather young, she would guess in his early thirties or so. Despite the intense feelings raging inside, the only indication was the slight furrowing of his dark brows. Anyone looking at him would think something in the paper he was reading had caused the irritated look. Lorna knew differently. He was handsome in an intense way. His face was clean shaven except for the short angled sideburns clipped close at his ears.
She couldn’t stop herself from walking over to him and lightly laying her hand on his arm. He looked up at her a startled look in his eyes. Before he could speak she said softly, “I’m sorry about your loss.”
He looked down at the slim fingers wrapped earnestly a few inches below his elbow before looking back into sea green eyes. He didn’t recognize her and wondered how she could possibly know anything about his “loss”. “What do you know about it?” His voice was rough as though he had a sore throat. She knew it was from the pain he held inside that tightened his throat.
“I don’t know anything about it.” she said truthfully, “but I know you’re hurting inside and you need some help before it drowns you.”
“Like you said you don’t know anything about it.” and he pulled his arm from her grasp. He threw some money on the table as he rose to leave. He didn’t know who she was and didn’t care to find out. There were too many things wrong in his life right now he didn’t know where to start to begin fixing it.
He glanced down at his watch before saying in a short tone, “Excuse me.” in way of a parting. Unfortunately she didn’t take the hint but began walking beside him matching her gate to his. Which wasn’t all that easy for her when you took into account his height. He must have been several inches over six feet tall. She had to take twice the steps to keep up with him. But she managed to do so without looking as if she were desperately running to walk with him.
“If you would like to talk with someone to help you through this, I could give you a number of a counselor. He’s a friend of mine and very good with issues of loss. Or if the thought of counseling doesn’t appeal, there’s a group that meets every week on Wednesdays at the United Church on Toby Street. The meetings start at 6:30 p.m.” She said all of that in a rush knowing he didn’t want to listen to her but hoping it would stick with him anyway.
He looked down at her with a tired expression on his face. He had hoped she would go away if he ignored her but so far he wasn’t having any luck with it so he decided to be direct. “Look, Miss?” He raised his hand waving it distractedly, “Never mind. I appreciate the concern, really I do but you don’t know me. You don’t know what I’m going through. Now I really have to go.” With that he upped his pace enough that she would have had to either run to match it or give up and let him go. She let him go but not before she had slipped a small card into his jacket pocket. Printed on the card was the name of the group, Grief Management with the church’s address under it. It also had a toll free number on the bottom where someone could be reached at anytime of the day or night.
She watched him walk away, his back ramrod straight. She hoped he wouldn’t be too upset with her for slipping it into his pocket when he wasn’t paying attention. He had been so intent on getting away from her. He had been uncomfortable in her presence as most people often were at first. His disquiet hadn’t come from being caught in her knowing gaze which was the case normally, his came from the inability to speak of the thing that caused him such pain. She knew he kept these feelings to himself. That was the reason he couldn’t get past whatever had happened to make him feel this way.
He didn’t know how she pinned him like that. He thought he was finally beginning to cover his feelings. At least his parents had stopped looking so concerned every time he walked into the room. It had been a year since Lisa had been convicted and sentenced. Even though he knew she was sick he still couldn’t stand to hear her name mentioned. He didn’t visit her. He couldn’t bring himself to see her.
He was sure he wouldn’t be able to get over this. He had seen a shrink for about six months but realized he wasn’t getting anywhere and he stopped going. Everyone said it would take time but he would be able to move on. He wondered if any of the people that told him that had lost children. He was sure they hadn’t or they wouldn’t be so quick to say that. They would know better. They would know you never got over losing a child.
He had taken a leave of absence from work for a while after he buried Bella. After a few weeks he couldn’t stand having nothing but time to sit and think what he could have done to prevent losing her. He blamed himself every minute of the day when he was awake and hardly slept but when he did he had terrible dreams. In them he watched her fall down the stairs as she called for him to help her. He would then be in the ambulance again with her glazed eyes open accusing him, blaming him. He would wake shaking and afraid.
He threw himself into his work again. Believing if he worked every moment he was awake he wouldn’t have any extra time to think of anything else. But the dreams always found him and he would relive it every night. The shrink had prescribed a sleeping pill for him when he told him about them. He had used them for a week or so then tossed them. They made him groggy and wanting to sleep more than he should. He didn’t like feeling out of control he wasn’t the kind of person to close his eyes and hope it would go away. He preferred to deal with it head on. His problem with this was he didn’t know how to deal with it. He didn’t know where to start.
He guessed becoming a workaholic wasn’t the way to work through this but for him it was doing something.
He was sitting on a bar stool just downing a shot and chasing it with a beer when a small group of people walked in the door to his left. He glanced up and saw a tall man with two redheads walk in. He vaguely thought some men... but didn’t finish the thought. The one redhead looked at him but he turned back to his beer. He was seriously in a drinking mood.
He just downed his second shot and was raising his beer to his lips when one of the redheads stepped beside him.
“Hello.” she said in a soft voice.
“I don’t need any company.” he muttered without looking at her.
“Are you here alone?” When he didn’t answer she tried again, “Are you waiting for someone?”
He finally realized she wasn’t going to be put off easily so he turned to look at her that’s when he recognized her from the street. “What are you? Mother Theresa? You trying to save the world?”
“No, I’m not trying to save the world. And by no means am I comparable to a saint. Actually, I’m an exotic dancer.” Her eyes were wide at her own lie. What had possessed her to say that? Maybe the smug look on his face that said he was looking at a do gooder.
For all of about half a second surprise registered in his eyes then he shrugged and turned back to his beer. She gave it a full two minutes before asking, “How are you doing?”
He ignored her question and motioned for the bartender to set him up another round. He downed the shot and took a gulp of the beer. He glanced down at her then, “Oh, still here?”
The large man walked up beside her and put an arm around her waist, “Hey, Gorgeous, we ordered your drink. You coming back to the table?”
She smiled up at him but before she could answer the drunk on the barstool that she was trying to get through to said, “Yeah, Gorgeous, go back to the table.”
Ian looked sharply at the man being rude to his sister-in-law. He would have put him in his place but Lorna stopped him. She went with Ian back to their table and tried to forget about the man sitting at the bar. He needed her. He just didn’t want to admit it. But soon he would.
They ate around conversation and laughter. When they were leaving she noticed that he was still sitting there on his barstool. She was surprised that he was still upright by now. She stopped on the way out the door to speak with the bartender. She slipped him a 20 and thanked him.
