Ok, derived from the Past Life thread, let's talk about what we think about the soul specifically. Anything relating to Past Lives/Memories should remain with the relevant thread.

You know, I was wondering about this a while ago while writing my story about this special being who has the potential to be the most powerful in all existence. In order for that being to be THAT powerful, I figured that having many kinds of abilities might be necessary. For example, body abilities (the ones anyone can use by learning them or just having them) would be good but, what about "Soul Abilities"? Can a soul have an ability? If so, I've probably just came up with something that can be quite original. If not, that's ok cuz I may put a spin on them after I revise my tale.
More on the subject, I think a soul is another representation of a being. Whether or not it can re-incarnate is besides the point. Many people have their own views about the souls and how they can be affected or whatever. For example, I like how the view of the soul is on "Ghost Rider". And how he can use his ability to burn bad guys souls by making them feel all the suffering they have inflicted on their victims.
I hope to see more views on this subject later on. 3nodding

It may seem strange to say, but we are souls the way I see it. A spirit inhabits a body, and when a body becomes useless (aka it can't function anymore and dies), the soul moves on. Our souls are our consciousness effectively. For example, as I type this to you now, it is my soul that is controlling my body. Remember the quote from the strategy guide of Vagrant Story that I posted?
"The body is but a vessel for the soul, a puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny. And lo, the body is not eternal, for it must feed on the flesh of others, lest it return to the dust from whence it came. Therefore must the soul deceive, despise and murder men."
I think that we as people forget ourselves in this sense. People who do not believe in souls haven't picked up on what they really are, if that makes sense. It's almost as if their physical selves have become more important and so they think their souls (effectively the soul is thinking) "I'm physical, this is me." I don't know if that makes sense to you at all, but let me know.
Erm...how else can I put it? The soul thinks it's something it's not perhaps? It's the soul that is the person. The body is the puppet, which makes us all puppeteers. I don't know any other methods of analysing it.
Feel free to look at it from another angle. You might be able to put it in a clearer form. I do have a habit of being overly complex much of the time.

Could the Lifestream in Final Fantasy 7 be relevant to this subject, in a matter of speaking??

Of course, but I also want to focus on the point I made above. The thread is all about souls after all, and according to FFVII's world a person's spirit returns to the planet's energy when they die.
The main point of the thread is to discern what souls are as a part of ourselves as well as perceptions of them. One series of perceptions stem from Squaresoft/Square Enix in Final Fantasy.

So, no comments on my idea of the soul having an ability then? neutral
I like how the story of FF7 says that they can return to the planet and how all the energy can sort of take a more active role when the planet is in huge danger.
Say, if a soul is in reality, what we truly are... then what do you think happens when we have dreams that seem like dreams but in reality, they're like some form of astral projecting? I've heard of a few cases where people think they've been dreaming when they were actually traveling the world using their astral form. Do you think the astral form is some sort of travel for our souls or something else entirely? Just for the record, I don't think I've had this happen to me at all. And if it has, I can't recall.

It's said that the soul can experience the future as well. Apparently that's what deja vous is.
I've had dreams where I've been somewhere in reality. I've been to Portsmouth to see HMS Victory about three times in one month during my dreams, and each time it's felt quite real.

When we experience dreams that feel way too real where we are somewhere else in this world, it could be possible that our souls actually leave our bodies and go to these places. I saw some show where they would show examples of things that are either fake or real, I believe called "fact or Fiction?", and there was this one about a guy who had some mental disabilities. He went for a drive at night and his car broke down in the bitter cold. He had forgotten his jacket at home and was all alone and left to die until a strange man came from nowhere with some tools and fixed his car. Then they showed the man, who turned out to be his father, wake up from sleep in his bed next to his wife. In his hand was oil stuff and a wrench. At the end of the show they revealed the stories they showed that were real and those that were fiction. Turns out the story was all true.
So, why can't we separate from our bodies while in a very meditated state of mind and go places we might not otherwise?

That's a very good point. I only wish it would feel more real in my own dreams. I've never really had a dream that felt so absolutely real that I couldn't differentiate it from reality, so it's hard for me to understand. Then again, perhaps I have had realistic dreams, but just have no recollection of them at all...
I'm curious, by the way, what does it mean to be asleep? I mean aside from letting your body rest, what purpose is there to having dreams? And why can't you be conscious of what's going on around you. I mean, if you lie down for 12 hours without closing your eyes and dreaming, does that still count as sleep and would you still feel more energized later?

I suppose I should give that idea of mine a rest then, he-he... sweatdrop
I saw that show too E-Dragon! I used to watch it a lot but, too bad we don't get to see it anymore. I wonder if it's still running... I've heard of how it IS possible to meditate and be separated from our bodies but, not everyone can pull that off. It supposedly requires a lot of training of the mind and body.
You know calimouse, I don't think that could count as sleep cuz, my cousin couldn't sleep for a few days and she even tried to lay down and everything without closing her eyes or being able to dream and she didn't feel energized later in the morning. Sleep is very essential to good health. 3nodding

i guess my technical answer would be that the soul is something that is embedded into a persons body and when you die your body goes but the soul is still there. I guess its a bit hard to explain, but my idea of the soul comes from the basics of practicing my Hindu religion.

Yeah, that's pretty much what the soul is for a lot of people.
However, I hear that the soul is not the same as the spirit and, I recall there being something else even... but what? I can't remember... sweatdrop

So, you used to believe they were both one and the same? But not anymore? What happened? Or maybe you meant to type "believe" instead of "believed".
BTW, guess what I saw the other day!? An anime called "XXXHolic"! It's about this teen who sees ghosts. He meets a good looking woman with a hot body and she sort of forces her way into becoming his tutor. The thing is that, the lady in question has these two kids who seem to be kinda her servants and are usually in a cheery mood. Here's the weird part, "they have no souls"! Now I ask you, how in the hell is it possible that two kids don't have a soul? They say they can never leave the lady's house because they are empty shells and they see the world differently than regular people. Weird, eh?
What does everyone think about this one?

No, I still believe they're the same thing. I've heard of XXX Holic but not seen it.
I don't think a being can "think" without a soul. Without a soul, a person or creature is either undead or brain dead as far as I am concerned.
