On "summoning" a faery (or any other nature spirit for that matter)...
I find it easiest to stand or sit quiet in the middle of the woods, relax and listen to the songs that the forest sings around you, from there interpret what the energy around you feels like. If you have an easily portable instrument such as a drum or can sing, then feel free to do so. Nature spirits are attracted to the sound of calming music. The fae folk have given me many visions this way, and are very willing to tell you their stories or give you guidance and assistance.
Be wary though, the fae aren't all as nice as what I've encountered and you may come across a few nasties.

Hmmm... let's see, besides what you said, the Spirits I've come across seem to be attracted to warm places, white flowers, feathers, honey, and skipping stones.
I notice I see them a lot when I read, which I believe has to do with my eyes being focused on their plane of existence for so long. For instance, focus your eyes on a page in a book, then lower the book, but keep your eyes focused in the same way. It feels very dizzying, because you're basically focusing on what's "in between" the air.
Another trick I like, is crossing your eyes. Not so they're both looking down your nose, but so you split everything in two. You know, when you look at a candle and unfocus your eyes it because two candles? Well, split the image around you in two and then try to look between the two pictures.
It's also supposed to be the way to find a safe place to rest. Look around in this fashion until you're drawn to a paticular place.
