I found lately when going to conventions or going through fourm threads and see girls dressed in Hot Topic American Gothic and going around calling themselves Lolita. It's one of those twitch, twitch moments. But anyway I was just wonder what other peoples thoughts are on this subject and how you feel on it.

My honest belief is if they stay with representing a loli outfit that isn't too poser-ish, and show the mannerisims with the style and some knowledge behind it... there should be no prob.

I would say that they're uninformed of what the lolita fashion really IS. Just kindly explain to them that Lolita has different dressing standards than what they've been told. Especially empasize that skirts and such are certain lengths and that there's no profuse showing of the skin. Lolita isn't meant to look sexy, just cute and innocent (except for the goth or punk loli. They're just meant to look cute without being sexually desirable xD).
Just be patient with them if they ever talk to you about Lolita and that kind of thing. Otherwise, don't talk to them and ignore them.

Lolita isn't defined by clothes alone
it's also attitude and personality...
and doesn't matter what brand of clothes you wear
if it's american or japanese...
after all, Lolita isn't exactly japanese fashion
it's french fashion =D

If they don't follow the rules then they are simply posers.

Actually I would say its more or a mix of several things , its has strong hints from the early and late Victorian eras as well as some elements stretching from the late middle ages , and things used in the renaissance. So saying that I feel its not at all a french fashion so much as the cutest mutt fashion of the world. So yeah thos4e girls that run around claiming hot topic stuff as loli is rather annoying if you ask me . If your going to wear a fashion please have some clue about it. Or at least not profess to having a clue.

I went to a convention and saw a lot of girls dressed in that hideous Hot Topic dress, acting like they knew everything there was to know about the fashion and it disappointed me a lot(which is why I decided to host a panel that year and will probably host another one in 2009 as well). I think it's mostly a miscommunication of what this style is and that really, it's up to us more experienced lolitas to clear up any misconceptions about this style.

I've moved past my informing/lecturing days. Unless I am asked what I think about "Lolita" outfits, I don't say anything. Not to say it doesn't still bother me to high heaven, but it's one of those situations where it's just their demonstration of how little they know. It's not my business until someone makes it my business.
One of my friends sent these two girls to me last year, and they wanted me to help them execute their original designs for "Lolita." They were obviously trying to go for EGL, but it has some really garrish qualities that infuriated me. I wouldn't have associated myself with such a design, so I had to school them on what they were messing with. sweatdrop

although i think they are representing more of the american goth style than actual lolita, i still have to say that it's a cool fashion. i believe that if they think of themselves as lolita, let them go with it. if they do it right, i don't see why we can't consider them lolitas as well, but if they aren't, they aren't. there's no "fine line" to me. it's a yes-no kinda thing. does that make since? oh, and to the sluts comment, they've found it. stressed

If you buy all of your stuff from hot topic you're a mall goth not a real goth. Tripp pants etc. are not gothic they just look retarded. If they where to go into a goth club they would be laughed at.

I can't be bothered to start anything with people like that. Similar to what Miss Mari said, unless I'm asked directly, I just let them go their merry way.
