Alano yelled, his hackles up. Just because she was so afraid of love didn’t mean she had to rain on his parade. I mean, you only picked one mate, and that was it. This was a big deal for him. And if he was ever going to introduce Kappy to these two he had grown up with, Maero better be respectful.
She glared at him in response. How many times had he treated her like an old spinster, and now he wanted her to jump for joy because he was signing up for heartache?

She mind-spoke privately to Naton, a skill of hers. Her psychic ability was better than either of theirs, so she knew he couldn’t respond in kind, but he could hear her clearly.
He whimpered softly, his ears folded back. He didn’t like it when they fought. Just because he never spoke in anything but bird noises didn’t mean he was ignorant, it just meant that he chose not to talk. And who wouldn’t, growing up with these two? He’d rather let them think he was slow than have to actually fight and keep his own among them. He liked being peaceful, and was actually rather happy for Alano. He tried sneaking a smile the male Koivu’s way when he thought Maero wasn’t looking.
He sat down in the clearing, pretending to be fascinated by the grass on this spring morning, trying to take himself out of the fighting as much as possible.
