In our day, big close families are rare in existence, but I don't think they die out totally. I think that people make up for the blood related families they never have by finding family elsewhere, whether it be with friends, a girlfriend's, with fellow club members, fellow guildies, fellow team players. Family is a very unrefined and non static definition.

I disagree. Extended families are gone, but I do not consider other people my family. Alesia could not have been my family for example. She would be best friend. It is your own personal decision on who is family and I doubt that when you really get down to it, you would find friends family.
Most people can not really decide to ignore family on the basis of hatred. However, your best friend can drift apart and become forgotten. I will never again speak to my grandmother but I won't forget her.

If a best friend has a big impact on your life, I don't see how you can forget them any more than a grandmother who you may have talked to once.
