Explanation of why people belive in gods and religion by looking at:
Weakness...why people believe in gods, in religion, in prophets such as Jesus and the bible...
It's a tough life. And, religion claims to make it so much better than it really is. I've come up with four main categories as to why people believe in religion in relation to weakness below.
The Unknown:
One of the original reasons mankind invented religion and gods was the issue with the unknown. Humans look for the easy way to explain things; humans want to get the answers easily and we all know this. Sometimes people need answers so badly, that they'll do anything, absolutely anything, to satisfy their thirst to deal with their questions. We aren't a race of super-intelligent scientists. We can't explain why everything happens. And let's face it, for most of us, that's not always good enough. And, it works pretty well, doesn't it? To say that a god simply made us, and that you lost your job because of a god, and that you don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend because of a god. Think about that. ( I know, I said "think," when we all know religion is about blind faith). It takes about 2 seconds to say out loud "because of God." How long does it take to explain gravity? Or the cause of a thunderstorm? Imagine what an easy life we'd have, if every time we didn't know an answer to a test, we could just put "because God did it?"
Protection:
The world is a dangerous place to live in. Religion offers the ultimate protection: A divine being, an all powerful, eternal entity that's always there to protect you? What could be better than that? A divine entity always there to watch over and protect you...which would you choose if you needed to defend yourself? A gun? A tank? An entire army? Or a god? I don't think that any one of us, in a dangerous, life threatening situation, would choose a gun over a god for their protection. And, in the dangerous world in which we live in, who would feel safe without a god protecting them?
Personal Insecurity:
Life is complex. Sometimes it feels like we're walking around like chickens with our heads cut off. We don't know what's going to happen next, what's become of us, or where we're going. It can be mind boggling, insanity producing, and just plain numbing. But, if you can convince yourself to believe in a god...oh, never again do thinks look fuzzy and uncertain. You've got a god up there! Some religions have many gods. Imagine... a whole group of gods guiding your life, making sure things are going to be ok for you. It's pretty tempting. How often have you walked into a job interview and asked a god to let you get the job? How often have you presented a project in front of the class having beforehand asked a god that you do well? It'd be such an easy life, wouldn't it? To know that, no matter how bad you did on the interview or project, your own personal god was there to make sure things turned out ok.
Death:
It's terrible. You live a little bit, and then you're gone, poof, vanished. This is a two pronged reason to believe in a god. First, there's loved ones. It's crippling...to one day wake up and have to accept that you'll never see your loved one again. You don't want to hear it, you don't want to acknowledge it, you don't want to accept it! No. Why should they die, it's not fair, you can't stand to be without them, why, no, why, no no no! But then again, if you had a god, you can calm down. You don't have worry anymore. Your loved one's up there with your god, watching over you. They're not gone forever. They've just moved on. And suddenly the pain isn't so bad. You haven't lost your loved one forever. Your mother, father, brother, sister, boyfriend/girlfriend, or whomever it is...they're not gone, just, up there. They haven't stopped thinking, stopped feeling, stopped existing...they're not in a damp hole in the ground. They're up there, happily frolicking, being at peace and whatever else your own personal religion tells you. Who wouldn't rather their loved ones continue existing, rather than vanish into a damp hole in the ground?
And then there's your own personal dilemna. You don't want to die. You don't want to stop thinking and feeling and being. To just stop and be gone. To no longer dream, to no longer eat and love and cry and play and everything you could do. Who wants to accept that? Most people are so desperate to do anything BUT accept that, including believing in a god.
Now of course, there are more factors and categories and issues that cause people to believe in religion than the 4 I've named above. But I think that those that I have addressed pretty much include all others. For example, if someone wanted to say that by some random frequent act of luck, they survived a freak accident, and that it could only be the work of a god, you could include that in the Personal Insecurity category, Death Category, or even Protection category.
And besides the four categories i've just named above, is the fact that we're brought up being brainwashed by religions. Our parents take us to church, make us go to religious schools, you hear the elderly talking about it. Of course, most of them, like most of you, didn't logically, using reason and common sense, conclude that their belief in god made sense. They just were brought up in the same way, being told by their parents, and their parents being told by their parents, and so on and so on. So you see, with all this, it's no wonder people believe in religions and gods. It's like a sickness affecting logic, a tumor in the the part of the brain that controls reason... it's...an epidemic!
