The Great Seer
~Zach Brown

“To see what is not meant to be seen is a great burden, but also a great treasure”
- Kyra, First Great Seer

In ancient lore there were three brothers, one could see the future and past, another could see spirits, the last could see the physical world, or normal vision. The last brother gave his gift to every one in the world. The first two kept their gifts until their deathbeds and passed it on to their wives. The wives remarried and passed the gift on to their children. Eventually a man who could see spirits and a woman could see the past and future had a daughter, Kyra. Kyra was known as the Great Seer for she could see everything. She made it so certain people could see spirits and the future and every four generations a Great Seer was born in her family.

Chapter One

“Hey Kristy, Catch!” said a voice.
Kristy turned and caught the football. She felt a surge of power go from her hands to her... eyes... maybe...?
Everything went black. Suddenly she saw herself throwing the ball back to the boy. When it passed she just shook it off and threw the ball to the boy.
WOHA! De Javou! She thought.
“Hey grandpa”
“Hello Kristy, how was your day?”
“Good, but I thought I saw the future”
“The future! Really”
“I was probably seeing things. You probably think I’m crazy.”
“No I believe you”
“Thanks Grandpa Kevin. Well talk to ya later.”
I walked up to my room and blared my stereo full blast. The loud music calmed me.
“TURN THE MUSIC DOWN!!” My brother Kyle yelled.
“FINE!” I yelled back.
I heard a knock on my door, “come in,” I said. It was my mom, dressed in an emerald green business suit. She was the president of some environmental group in San Francisco.
“Hey Kristy, can you make dinner tonight? I have a meeting in 10 minuets.”
“Well if it’s in San Francisco you’ll never make it”
“Can you or can’t you?”
“Yeah I –“
“Kim!” My dad yelled
“I’m coming! Thanks Kristy.”
I went downstairs and my grandpa was already starting dinner. Behind him was ... no it couldn’t be ... grandma! My grandma had been dead for nearly five years and there she was yelling at my grandpa how he couldn’t even boil water let alone cook a meal.
“Gra – gra – grandma!?”
“Kevin don’t put so much salt in! Kristy my dear!”
“Kristy who are you talking to?” my grandpa asked.
“No one,” I answered.
“Kristy you look like you’ve seen a ghost,” my apparently undead grandma said.
“Uh ... well I kinda am seeing a ghost right now”
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“I don’t know how to say this, but you’ve been dead for about five years.”
“Impossible”
“Well how come grandpa can’t see you?”
“Well how come you can see me?”
“Um ... good question, why can I?”
“My dear I think you’re a spirit seer!” She said. “Just like me!”
“A what!”
“Before I explain, follow me.”
She took me up to our attic.
“Now a sprit seer,” she said, “is someone who can see the spectral image of spirits. It’s a wonderful gift and also a burden, for spirit seers have to help the spirits they see cross over to the other world.”
“So does that mean I have to help you?”
“If I truly am dead then yes, but I can’t really be dead”
“You’re pretty much dead except the fact –“
“I get that OK!” My grandma yelled. She had never yelled at me before. “I’m sorry it’s just the idea is still new to me”
“It’s ok,” I said calming her, “so let’s get back to helping you.”
“Over there,” she pointed to a trunk in the corner of the room. “That’s where I keep all my notes on spirits I’ve helped.”
I opened the trunk and inside there were stacks of thousand of pieces of paper all covered in writing. I grabbed one and I felt that same sensation I felt earlier today.
This time I saw my grandma sitting at the desk we had in the attic writing the notes I held in my hand.
“What is it my dear?” My grandma asked.
“I saw you writing these notes at the desk,” I replied.
“You just had a premonition”
“A premy what!?”
“A premonition my dear, a vision of the future or past.”
“I’m so proud of you my dear”
“About what?”
“Being the Great Seer!”
“Huh?”
“In your grandfather’s family every four generations a seer is born with the ability to see the future and past, spirits, and obviously the physical world. That’s also why everyone in his family names start with K. Kyra, the first Great Seer’s daughter wanted all other Great Seers to have a name to start with K,” my grandma explained.
“OK – this is all crazy ... I know, this is all just a dream.”
“No, it’s all real,” she said, “now back to helping me.”
“Well how long have you been lingering around here?”
“For about two weeks”
“You’ve been dead for five years.”
“Really, I wonder what caused me to appear now.”
“Hmm ...”
“Wait was I the first spirit you’ve seen?
“Yeah”
“That means I’m your guardian”
“What’s that?”
“A spirit that helps first time seers.”
“Well that’s a relief because I had no clue how to help you,” I said, “By the way, how long do guardians stay with spirit seers?”
“For at least one year,” she stated, “though I had mine for three years and I wasn’t a very good seer until my fifth or sixth year.”
“What if I need help with seeing the future or past?” I asked.
“Talk to your grandpa, he has that gift.”
“What about mom and Kyle?”
“Your mother only has premonitions and Kyle has no gifts that are known.”
“Dinner’s ready!” My grandpa yelled.
“I’ll be down in a minuet!” I yelled. “Bye grandma, talk to you later”
“Good bye my dear”
I went downstairs and grandpa was already eating. “Hi grandpa, sorry I didn’t help with dinner.”
“It’s ok.”
I sat down and filled my plate with spaghetti and put butter on top, I hate marinara sauce. Yuck!
“Where’s Kyle?” I asked.
“He had some night classes at the university,” he replied.
When we were finished eating I told my grandpa that I had saw grandma.
“Did she explain that you are the Great Seer?” He questioned.
“Yeah – wait how did you know?”
“My grandfather was so that you make you or Kyle the next Great Seer.”
“Still how did you know it was me?”
“Kyle is 19 years old he should have his powers by now. I got mine when I was 11.”
“Grandma pretty much explained what spirit seers do and how they work, but not so much about future seers.”
“Well they are also called Psychics. They have premonitions and some very powerful psychics like you and me have visions though a crystal, orb, or even a mirror.”
Out of his pocket he pulled a scarlet bag and pulled out a glass orb.
“This belonged to Kyra and every other Great Seer. It now belongs to you.”
“Grandpa I can’t take that from you.”
“No, it belongs to you and it is my destiny to give it to you. Now, hold out your hands.”
I held out my hand and he placed the orb in my hands. It fit perfectly in my palms. It felt like it belonged there.
The orb’s edge started to glow gold light and soon the rest of it did to then I saw my brother in an ally way being ... shot.
“I saw it to let’s go.”
We got into my grandpa’s car and went to the university. Kyle came walking out of the admin building. My grandpa honked the horn. Kyle came over and got in the back seat.
“What are you guys doing here?” asked Kyle.
“Thought we surprise you and pick you up so you didn’t have to walk home in the dark,” replied grandpa.
Wow, I thought, I just stopped my first vision from coming true.

Or so I thought ...

Chapter Two

The rest of the week had been pretty dull. I went trough techniques on how to get premonitions from grandpa. I also helped my first spirit! His name was Mark. My mother found out from grandpa that I was the Great Seer, she didn’t seem to care that much. She bought me a journal with the Chinese symbol for sight on it so I could write down my notes.
My first spirit, Mark, was a very confused old man who lived in our house before us. Luckily he didn’t die in our house, that would have been just plain creepy. It was pretty easy to help him I just told him another family moved in. He didn’t seem to care, but for some reason he wanted in the fridge to make a ham sandwich. Anyways I wrote about how I helped Mark in my journal.
Tonight, much like it was a week ago, mom and dad were only god knows were. Kyle had classes and grandpa and me (and don’t forget grandma’s spirit) were at home eating (except grandma).
After dinner, like most nights when it was just grandpa, and me, I looked into my crystal. I saw the same thing as last week, my brother being shot.
“Grandpa!!!!!” I yelled.
We were almost to the building that my brother had classes in. Then we heard a shot. Grandpa and I exchanged looks and he slammed his foot on the accelerator.
We went to the ally that I pointed out was the one in my vision and there was Kyle, still alive, but a gun was pressed to his head
“Give me your money,” said the man with the gun.

Dear Reader,
I feel that the next event is too grim to explain in detail. In short, a man who wanted his money shot Kyle Kurtis in the head. Before the man could take his money he was scared away by Kristy and Kevin Kurtis. I know some will be saddened by the fact that I did not go into more details about his death. If you wish to make them up, do so if you wish.
Sincerely,
The Author

“NO!!” I yelled.
I ran towards the man who killed my brother, but before I reached him he ran out of the ally.
“Hello,” I heard my grandpa say, “911?”
Once grandpa hung up I immediately heard sirens. I knew it was too late though. My brother was dead, and the guy who killed him was gone.
“What’s going on,” I heard Kyle say.
Kyle...!
I turned and there stood my ... well ... floated my brother’s spirit.
“Well... how do I put this... umm... you’re kinda... dead.”
“Huh! No way!”
“Then explain that,” I said while pointing to my brother’s body.
“How can I be standing here and lying there at the same time??!!”
“You were shot.”
“Oh!! Know I remember. So cold!”
“What’s cold?”
“Dying.”
“Umm... let’s go home.”
“One problem.”
“What?”
“I can’t move.”
“Oh... you're probably still attached to your body.”
“Meaning...”
“Your spirit doesn’t want to leave you body. It wants to stay near it. You need to accept the fact that you are dead to be able to move.”
“Well how do I do that?”
“By understand that you are dead and it was your time to die. To help you I need you to accept the fact you dead so you can come home and talk to grandma.”
“Grandma?” Kyle had always been close to grandma. “Let’s go!” Kyle said as he floated through half the police force of San Francisco.
I explained to grandpa that Kyle was in the car with us. I also finally told him grandma had been following (and nagging) him for the past week. He seemed a bit confused. Finally I said, “Let’s go home.”
When we got home Kyle was happy to see grandma and grandma was happy to see Kyle.
“You died so young my dear, so young,” grandma told Kyle.
My mom and dad got home and were in tears. I was surprised dad could drive home with the tears clouding his vision.
“You shouldn’t have let him walk home alone,” my mom said.
“Mom, I’m 15 I can’t drive without someone 21 or older and has a license,” I stated. “Maybe you should have bought him a car,” I told her.
“Well you and Grandpa Kevin should have gone to pick him up.”
“What do you think we were doing?”
“You know you seem very calm through all this.”
“That’s because Kyle’s spirits here with us,” I whispered in her ear.
“Really! Were is he?” my mother asked
“Right here!!” Kyle yelled.
“Kyle she can’t hear you.”
“Can she see me then?”
“Would she be asking were you are if she could.”
“Oh. Well, looks like you’re the messenger.”
“Hey no fair!”
“What’s going on?” mom asked.
“Kyle’s being an idiot!!” I said.
“You still didn’t answer my question. Were is he?”
“He’s over there by the window with grandma.”
“Grandma?”
“Yeah grandma showed up about a week ago.”
“Oh,” Mom said really confused.
“Just talk to Kyle like normal and I’ll tell you what he says back.”
“Kyle, um... I wished you wouldn’t have died,” my mom said.
“Well duh!!” Said Kyle.
“Well duh!!” I said.
“Kristy!” Yelled my mom.
“That’s what Kyle said!”
“Well then, Kyle!”
“Sorry.”
“He said he’s sorry.”
“Well I’m gonna go to bed,” said my dad balling his eyes out while coming into the living room with us.
“Me too,” said my mom.
“Yeah it’s been a long day,” said Grandpa Kevin.
“Good-night,” I said to them.
