I think the worst thing to happen to disney is some of the movies that they make now a days that make disney have a bad name. Like I went to see Prince Caspian and I saw one of the trailers for one of there new movies coming up for Disney and I said to myslef nooo!!! It was a movie called BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA I didn't think that Disney would go down to that level but they did. crying

I was actually a little excited to see the Disney logo at first, but then when it got to what movie the preview was actually for I wanted to shoot myself DX

It, honestly, looks terrible.
I can only hope The Princess and the Frog makes up for it big time.

Click on my sig, it's super special awesome!

I think the worst thing was when Disney started churning out direct to DVD lame sequels that just cheapened their image. IMO they've also made a couple of blatantly poor decisions regarding titles, storyline and marketing in the past. Oh and giving up 2D animation... that was tragic.

Hannah Montana and High School Musical are good for the company though, they've found a niche in the teen/tween market which is really important to keep things profitable and running... their sugary sweet more traditional stuff doesn't appeal to most older kids these days unfortunately. I think the company has a hard time figuring out exactly who they want to appeal to.

On marketing I agree with leanbh_fiata, High school Musical and Hannah Montana created good money for the raking. Though I am sick of seeing the merchanise... I thought it was bad at the retail outlet I work at, but when I visited Toys'r'us I felt sick at all the Hannah Montana toys.

I also agree that it was indeed the TERRIBLE sequels that Disney pumped out. Little Mermaid too was a DISAPPOINTMENT almost beyong imagining. Aladdin's sequels were bearable... Cinderella's and Pocahonta's were also just bleh. Peter Pan's was forced...

I just want something original... so I hope that the Princess and the Frog is going to give that too me.

Hey, at a time of making bad sequels (Little mermaid at the forefront in my mind) they made the Lion King II, and it was good.

Just thought I'd jump in and protect my precious Kovu.

Hi there, you are right. I remember that "Lion King II" was (I think) Disney's 2nd attempt at a sequel after "Aladdin". I do admit that it wasn't all that bad, I guess after they found that to be profitable they just didn't know when to stop. I mean, classic fairytales like "Cinderella" and "Peter Pan" do not need more tacked on.

I think the only feature that warranted a sequel was "Alice in Wonderland" - that really did have a follow up story in the book, "Alice Through The Looking Glass". Oh and I suppose "Pocahontas" too because she really did go on to live in London and then returned and married John Rolf the tobacco farmer. I haven't seen that sequel yet though so I don't know if they did it justice, I doubt they included the tobacco farmer bit. razz

I'm still not a fan of that movie ^^; It was like the Aladdin sequels for me... only bearable. Classics have that real good grip on your heart... since your opening up to a whole new world with a bunch of characters you learn to love...

When you come back to it... it's like visiting an old friend, but there's nothing to really talk about. They're story was over, sure there's a few problems about, but you know they can deal with it... they did it before. Almost the exact same way.

In the Lion King 2, the problem did take on a different angle, I liked the trust theme... but Pocahontas did it first.

I really don't like the movie Enchanted... I thought it could be funny, but when I watched it I was really disappointed... didn't like the animations, the music, the story...

I actually really enjoyed some of the Disney sequels. Bambi 2 is one of my favorite new cartoons, which is sort of surprising since I despised Bambi 1. I also liked Cinderella 3, though not 2. Then again, it had Lady Tremaine taking over, so that is probably why I liked it. I also loved Lion King 2 and 1 1/2 (my apologizes Sir Kent, but I did) and am greatly looking forward to Little Mermaid 3, I even pre-ordered it. (Yes, I am completely ridiculous.)
All I am trying to say, is that some of these sequels are actually good. Still, I know exactly what you mean. Walt Disney would be livid if he knew what had become of his beloved Empire. Not only do that have a truck-load of sequels, but they come out with the same sort of movies again and again. Walt never believed in repeating himself, in fact, he hated. He makes me furious when I think about how much Walt would hate the Disney Empire these days. Everyone is out for the money, they just do not care about their quality anymore. It is really sad.
Personally, I think the worst thing to happen to Disney, by far, was the death of Walt. I mean, I know this is sort of obvious, but when you really think about it Walt's death was instrumental to Disney falling in to its current hiatus. Without Walt's guiding hand, the company had no idea what to do. Walt had always been in complete control, so no one else knew how to handle it. Walt had always been the risk-taker, always striven for new things once he got tired of the old. The new owners just do not believe in risks, and that is the biggest problem of all. They have grown too secure. I mean, look at EPCOT. Had Disney been alive, EPCOT could have revolutionized modern society... now it is one of my least favorite parks. (Though, to be fair, I have started really liking it lately. EPCOT has been improving recently.)

((And there I went on another rant. My apologizes. When it comes to Disney I get a bit carried away.))

This is a really tough question for me, because when I think Disney one of the key words that pops into my head is amazing. This is possibly because I like to focus on positives. I truly can't think of anything that hasn't already been said. So I'm going to have to agree with cruzcorzo about the Beverly Hills Chihuaha. That really made me angry.
