Heavy rain fell in torrents from a dark black sky occasionally lit by bright flashes of lightning. The dreary weather seemed to have no affect on the two young adolescents running scared, through central park. Their faces were soaking wet as were their clothing straight to their skin. They wore black jeans, long sleeve turtleneck shirts and black high tops . The boy and girl were about fifteen years of age and looked identical in every aspect save the length of their hair and gender.

“Hurry up Nicky! Do you wanna get caught by DHS again?!” the boy’s voice was deep for his age and quite demanding but there was also concern in it. A small “I’m coming!” came from the girl he had referred to as ‘Nicky’ How long had it been since they had run away from the foster home? A week? Two perhaps? It seemed like forever ago. Both youngsters were cold, hungry and exhausted and worse yet, Nichole had been ill for the past day or so. It was hard enough to keep them fed and hidden but with his sister sick like this Justin had more to worry about. With a sigh he turned back and met his twin half way. “I’m sorry Nicky. I didn’t mean to yell.” He hugged her and felt her small body shake with another coughing fit. “Let’s find a warm place to sleep for awhile.” With a nod the slender, pale girl followed her brother into the dense mass of trees and shrubs. Walking was difficult for her but she did not like to complain it just made her brother worry and that was the last thing she wanted. Upon finding a small cave Justin led his sister inside and out of the rain and chilly air. He had her sit on a pile of dry moss while he built up a fire and rummaged in their knapsacks for some dry snacks and a water bottle. He took them both to his sister and forced her to eat and drink a little of each. “Come on Nicky. You have to eat something.” Reluctantly she obeyed and after that she curled up on her side and drifted off to sleep with her brother keeping watch over her.

It had not always been this way. Once upon a time they were happy and had a somewhat normal life. They had a mother and father and even a pet dog in the yard. Nichole loved the outdoors and was constantly trying to copy her brother and his friends in everything, from playing soccer to climbing trees to camping out in the yard. Her smile was infectious and she loved the way he never shunned her or made her go play with her own friends. It was a close bond they shared and Nichole thrived on his affection and acceptance. She new many siblings did not get along at all, much less have each other as best friends. Her perfect world shattered one day when their parents did not come home from a dinner meeting and the police came to the sitter’s house with DHS and took them away. No expiations no apologies. It was the worst day of her life but she had her brother to comfort her and assure her that they would be alright. And they had been…for awhile anyway. The trouble really began when the social worker informed them they were going to be separated and put into different homes with ‘good families' that would them and care for them, on either side of town. She had been devastated but Justin had stayed calm and emotionless until that night….the night he packed their bags and took her away. They had been running ever since and now she was ill. Waking from her fevered sleep by a nightmare the girl sat bolt upright. “Justin? I don’t feel to good…”

the distinct sound of city traffic whizzed by in the background and the sounds of people moving about in their normal hurried way as Jessie tried to sleep. The room was dark and damp part of an abanded factory. She had been there for what seemed like forever trying to sleep but never getting rest. She had to keep one eye open to watch for rodents and other stray animals. Jessie now 18 had been on her own living on the streets for six years. See had grown tough and callous to the world after she ran from her abusive home. Now she was all alone but never beaten. There was time when she wasn't alone back when Tony was there but... he's gone now.... taken

Justin shook his head to clear his thoughts once his twin spoke up. For the last hour or so he had nearly fallen asleep, and each time, he had shook his head, slapped himself, or pinched his arm. Once he had even gone outside into the rain. Turning his gaze onto his sister, he crawled closer to her, a worried expression on his face. Reaching out with one hand towards her forehead he felt her temperature. A moment later he winced.

"I think you have a fever Nicky. Here, drink some more water. That will help a little bit since we don't have medicine," he told her, reaching for the water bottle once again and holding it out to her. He didn't voice what he was also thinking; he knew she needed medicine, but he also didn't want to leave her here alone, sick. He refused to take the chance that something might happen to her.

((Horribly short. Sorry about that. I hate posting up a first post of this length, but it will probably take me a bit to get into the character. Then I'll make up for this post. Promise.))

With little reluctance the feverish girl took two sips from the water bottle but refused anymore than that. She began to cough again when she tried to speak and had to wait until it passed to tell her brother what she had to say. "...You should not...give me...all our water...you need some to..." Once more she closed her eyes and leaned against the cave wall. "I'll be okay...I hust need... a little rest..." She was feelling worse but she did not want to worry her brother more, although she knew she could not lie to him either. He always knew the truth about her. "Justin,...um...I stole...some ...cash from our foster mom...it's in my pack..." She was confessing to theft for two reasons; one she was to sick t hide it and two; she was giving him the means to go into town and buy some over the counter medication for her. There was actually one more reason for telling him about the money now. She was to sick for him to scold her or be upset with her. He was to kind-hearted to rebuke her now.
