Cash Shop Items Ruin the Economy of Gaia

Items like the Bag of Win and the Infinity Hat, do they create inflation? Or do they help the economy?

Above is a new topic.

Choose your position. Are you in agreement (For it) Not in agreement (against it) or neutral?

State your side/position and then defend your viewpoint.

I am choosing a neutral stance on this... At least until I can get some more information.

I Agree.

People are buying items for 2 bucks a pop with real money, and then selling them for waaaaay too high prices. Yes we did that with the monthly items, but those only sold for 15k AT MOST most of the time. With these you've got 90k items. It's makeing the price of other, much more rare items shoot up even more. -sigh-

Edit: Yes I do know that I am more ranting than anything on this, but still. You get where I stand ><

I agree.

I believe if this continues on the prices for even the monthly items will shoot up. I've noticed that when I started regardless of the item or its type it used to only be 12k when they started out. This months item in the market place is over 30k and increasing. I believe they're making the inflation even worse. I know the item is pretty awesome this time around but the month isnt over yet which in the long run, people will most likely attempt to purchase the item just to sell it, or for themselves. Which makes more in the system and the ones already in the market place will probably let it die down and let the price sky rocket.

I dont think I make sense.

The subject conflicts too much. So I'm gonna be neutral on this. I say neutral because it helps people who buy gaia cash, and it also makes use of the gaia cash. Though it kinda ruins the specialty of the monthly collectables because sometimes the cash shop items are better than the "collectables".

So I'll be neutral on this...

I’m going to say I disagree and here’s why.

I’ll start off with Gaia needs money to keep this site going. As of right now Gaia is spending more money than they are making. The site is only up and running right now because private investors have been investing in Gaia. So items like the Bag of Win and the Infinity Hat help Gaia stay open in effect keeping the Gaia economy running.

All cash shop items except for the “Bag of Win” don’t give you gold. So when people go to sell it in the marketplace all they are doing is taking gold out of the Gaia economy thanks to the 2% tax. No new gold in coming into the economy.

Now for the “Bag of Win”: The bags of win, without a doubt, injected money into the economy. But how much gold because of it? Not everyone got gold from it. Some people got items; some people got items worth less than what they bought the bag for in the market place. With “The Bag of Win” it is hard to say what effect it had on the economy as we don’t know how much came in and how much went out.

Here is what is ruining the economy: Boting without a doubt is ruining the economy and causing inflation. The problem is when people buy gold from non-gaia websites and it enters the Gaia economy when they use it to buy stuff, like monthly collectibles or cash shop items. This is why it looks like they are the problem. Buying gold from websites is against the TOS and will more than likely get you banned, and then you’re out real money and you have lost your Gaia stuff as well. I run into Gaia users who do not know this on a habitual basis. That is also part of the problem.

Now if you’re looking for more information and more detailed information on Gaia's economy you can read Sagger-AT3 journals. He is Gaia's staff economist and where I got most of my information.

I am also going to join the "Against" side.

While I know that the cash shop introduces new items to the world of Gaia, it is up to the MEMBERS of Gaia to determine how much they are willing to spend on these things. If the people of Gaia would refuse to pay outlandish prices for things, then it wouldn't matter how many new items are introduced.

When I first became a member of Gaia, I could purchase thank you letters and/or donation items (monthly collectibles if you prefer) for about 3,500 gold each. No one felt cheated by this and even those "exceptional" items didn't cost a whole lot more than what we were paying for new letters.

At that time, the most expensive item on the site was the Fairy Wings, which cost 40,000 gold.

Over time, though, the members of Gaia have become greedier (and, I am speaking to the members as a whole, not to each an every specific member). Not only do most members want to have the "expensive" items, they also want a lot of gold. Their morality goes farther and farther into nonexistence as more and more items are introduced and more gold is made available.

In essence, laming the Cash Shop for the problems with the economy is equivalent to blaming fictional characters for problems in society. It is just a simple way for people to avoid the truth: We are causing our own problems, and until we accept this, there is no way it can be changed.
