Unclaimed animals in the pound should be used for medical research

Above is a new topic.

Choose your position. Are you in agreement (For it) Not in agreement (against it) or neutral?

State your side/position and then defend your viewpoint.

I chose the "given to loving home one way or another" option. I don't think that these animals should be used for medical research OR put to death.

I guess then I should be for it because this would hardly be an argument otherwise.

Disagree!!

Picture this:

You're at the carnival with your loving mother/father/aunt/whatever. You see a penny 5 yards away and go to pick it up (note you're like, 5 to cool You let go of your gaurdian's hand rush over to it before anyone else claims your prize. You stuff it in your pocket, turn around, and see that your other isn't there. You look all over the place until a carni picks you up and brings you to the front. Your gaurdian (for some reason or another) didn't find you by the time the fair closed. They sell you to a medical research lab to be tested on.

Now. What is wrong with this picture besides the fact that your gaurdian sucks as a gaurdian and should be put in jail for losing their kid at a carnival? xD

Your a little graphic. But youre right in some sense. Selling animals to a research facility is wrong. The animals for one dont solve all the problems that theyre trying to solve, because its usually a drug to work on humans or product. Which in the long run takes hundreds of animals to try it out and the animals die and are thrown onto the first compose heap they can find.

I disagree for the argument of abuse of another creature who cannot choose to get research on. Like we do when human trials come out, we fill out the paper work and get tested for cash. We have rights. Therefore a creature with no rights shouldnt be forced to do something harmful.

It's cruel but it is better then use all dieing. Really without them being tested on, most of us would be either sick and dieing or dead. Personaly, I'd rather not die. Especialy since in most pounds if an animal doesn't get picked up within like 3 months they kill them anyways, so why not let them do some good before dieing?

((oh god it is hard arguing for soething that you don't bileve in , but we need both sides so...))

I agree. If only there were enough kind, loving people out there who would open their homes & adopt an animal.
I would, but seeing as I already have three feline companions, it is already too much work to feed, play, love, clean, & pay for all of their expenses.

Whaat funny is that we had to do debates all this week in History and she was giving us the topics and picking for us whether we were for it or agaist it. Well i had this topic and she put me for animal testing..

well, since miss Hulachow down is byherself and could use a little help...i'm going to b for animal testing..

If it weren't for animal testing we wouldn't have all tese medications we do now. So like she said, a lot of us would either be sick, dieing, or dead.

There are many things to agree with and disagree with in this subject. Though I must agree with this because we learn so much and we have expanded our knowledge about many of the diseases by using animals in these procedures. Many people would probably think that they are mistreated, but scientists follow a protocol, in which they take very good care of the animals, and if they experience pain, they treat them as if they were human. Also there is many speculation as to those that secretly abuse them. But PETA does it's best to stop it.
Another note, those animals that wont be chosen, what will become of them? Its bad that they would not meet an owner that would not use it for research, but don't you think that it'd be worse if they don't have anyone to care for them at all. I mean sure, those people at those societies like the Humane society try to find them homes. And if they dont find homes, they lose money, reducing the amount of care that they can give those animals. So I believe that it'd help people. In more than one way. And even though people say they could adopt them but they cant, its true, nobody can save all the animals, so for those they have saved, thats an accomplishment. For those they weren't able to help save, they should give them away, for the survival of humans depends on them. If there was no humans, it'd be pointless to try and save the animals. Wouldn't it?

So in the big scheme of things, it'd be best to give them to the scientists IF and ONLY IF they are unable to find a good home for the animals.
That is how I see this situation.

I have some problems with your argument.

First, a human child is given QUITE a bit more status in our society, so to compare an animal at the pound to a lost child is not a fair or accurate comparison.

Second, even if we were to assume that a human child COULD BE equal to a lost cat or dog, you would then have to make the comparison of the child being placed up for adoption to ANYONE (not just his or her undeserving guardian) and that this option would be made available for more than one day. As far as I know, there is no shelter anywhere in the US that is legally allowed to "dispose" of animals in less than 24 hours.

Third, there is statement that "the survival of humans depends on them". So... You are trying to say that all humans will perish if little Fluffy ISN'T used for medical research? How is that possible? Especially since cats and dogs DO NOT respond in the same ways to medications and other treatments in the same manner as humans. In fact, most HUMANS do not respond the same way to identical treatments. That is why some people are allergic to medications, some people get specific side effects, and even those who develop THE SAME side effects get them in varying degrees.

Using the animals as fodder for medical research is unethical and cruel to the animals, especially since there is no guarantee that these practices WILL help mankind.
