Without a standard language, how can we hope to communicate our ideas, thoughts, and etc.?
Without structure, how can we have a standard language?
So why is it many fan fiction writers abuse it?
Their lack of grammar, spelling, and characterization gives fan fiction writers as a whole a bad name. I know fan fiction is a hobby since obviously we can't earn any money off of it, but for the love of ramen, at least have a decent grasp of a known language, l33t and txting does NOT count.
If you're going to write in your native language, take the time to spell check it, and if you're going to use another language, please use it sparingly. On a lot of fan fiction websites, I see Japanese as one of the most abused languages for the English fan fictions. I'm not sure about fan fiction written primarily in other languages. Some words can be easily translated into English. Why not use them? I mean not everyone's going to know the translation.
Then there are some words that are roughly translated. When it comes to those words, I'm fine with it, but please for the people who don't know leave at least some notes either at the beginning or end of a story. Any author's notes in the middle of the story tends to detract or interrupt the flow. Pick up a book. Do you see any announcements in the middle of a story? No. Sure, there might be footnotes though they're at the end of the chapter. I think very few might have them in the borders of a page and small writing so it doesn't draw the reader's attention to it.
A typo here and there, I don't mind, because we're all human, and even our betas are human. What a concept; however, if there are going to be like two or three mistakes every other sentence... that's where I draw the line. Obviously, someone doesn't care about how he/she presents his/her story so why should we care about the story? If a writer puts effort into at least the grammar and spelling, it will show. Kudos goes to those who go an extra effort in making the story flow as well as keeping it interesting.
It's quite a shame that many people judge fan fiction writers based on the lazy. Sure, they're a lot of them since it doesn't take much to write one. I believe that all you need are a computer, internet connection, and registration with a web site. Doesn't take a lot.
Some fan fiction writers work hard. Don't judge us based solely upon the mindless drivel of lazy writers... Can they even be called that?
Wow, what a long rant, and that's only on the language. XD Don't get me started about IC, plot, and whatnot.
XD I copied and pasted this rant from a thread. Dun worry, this is one hundred percent Chibi. I happen to like the rant and transferred it here.
