I mean, it's soooo lame...kidding. rolleyes
My question is, what do ya' like about Silent Hill? I think that the game/movie is a lot like the town itself, in that it draws us to it for many different reasons, some darker than others. Even the game has taken on a dark personality of its own, much like the town...that's why, I think, you have the tight-knit fan base who tend to be very particular. Or maybe I'm just insane? sweatdrop lol
Anyway, what I'm asking is, what draws you to Silent Hill, the games or the movie, just Silent Hill in general. So, what is it? The symbolism? The plot? The characters? Or maybe a mix of all three? Or is it something deeper, a connection you have with one of the characters of plotlines in some distant way?

I'm not actualy allowed to play silent hill, so I dont know much about the characters, or plot, but I do know the town. For me its the town itself, you dont have to play the game to understand how dark the town is, its a character in and of its self in any role play I have ever been in! So yea, I'm all about the town itself since my only exsperiance with silent hill is the movie, and the role play(plus a few AMVs on the side)

I think what draws me to Silent Hill is the Fog... Nah, just kidding. Well, I like horror. Being scared is one of those cheap thrills that I enjoy in life. Well, that's what compelled me to buy the game in the first place. But yeah, there's just so much about the game that I absolutely love... I love the symbolism, the intricacy of the storylines. (I don't care what anyone says, Silent Hill 4 has one of the best backstories in the series.) The graphics are always gorgeous. Which is why I'm not too impressed with the way SH5 looks, but graphics aren't everything. I just think they could do better. SH2 and 3 were ahead of their time in graphics. SH5 should be too. The horror is another thing, of course. Anyone who was skeptical about Origins not being scary because it's on a smaller screen (The PSP version) was sorely mistaken, if played in a proper environment--in the dark, with headphones on. It can be just as immersive on a handheld as anything on a normal screen. Another thing I like about it is the occult factor. The fact that the incidents aren't caused by something man made, or scientific (as much as I love scientific horror.) But the occult part of it means that they can expand the artificial universe as far as they want, and it wouldn't be considered too over the top.
Wow, I'm in a rambling mood today. sweatdrop

I'm a horror fan not because I like the gore - although I do like the gore - but because horror is the emotion which is best at getting at the inside of your head, where your soft bits are, and screwing them up.
We like being shocked, don't we? When a story is shocking, a story is good. And being shocked is just getting your mind hurt, fast and unexpectedly.
Silent Hill, by employing symbolism and basically going into the world of the main character's (or some other character's) head, goes even deeper into the player's head. Good characters are characters you can't help but empathize with. You experience their emotions and reactions. That's the entertainment - that's why we don't want to read about accountants having a normal day. Silent Hill isn't only gruesome, it's deeply, inescapably intimate.

Silent Hill is made great by what makes all great things: A long-established legacy, a rabid fanbase, and the hilarious in-jokes that come with both.

I'd have to disagree. Rabid Fanbases are very bad. Fanboys and fangirls ruin every franchise they touch. Plus... What if Silent Hill had no fanbase whatsoever? Would that make it a bad franchise? I mean, let's just say that Silent Hill is the way it is, and nobody likes it. Would you base your opinion on it based on its sales or its popularity?

Biohazard EXTREME I'd have to disagree. Ok, rephrase. A dedicated, yet intelligent fanbase.

THERE ya go... But still, Silent Hill wasn't made great by its fans. The fans were the RESULT of its greatness.

It's such a loss of an experience though. You can't really appreciate a horror game by watching it. First of all, YouTube video quality kinda sucks. There's no interactivity. I would never subject myself to such pain. I need to experience a game. Not just watch what happens.

Well. When you aren't allowed to play the games YouTube is a good alternative.

I would have to agree, there's nothing like the thrill of feeling like you're the one responsible for the well-being of your character, and fighting off all sorts of freakish creatures. Playing in secret is always fun too, hehe. When my b***h-troll of a mother used to ground me from my NES, I'd just play when she wasn't around, she never commanded much respect as an authority figure anyway, so the hell with her. So, why aren't you allowed to play games anyway, Lisa?

Well, I think that's why translating games into movies isn't accepted so well. Because no matter how good of a storyline and special effects the movie might have, taking away interactivity automatically downgrades it as a medium.
