I am AGAINST IT!

The person's economical and financial situation and background have no bearing on their ability to learn. The teachers and school administrators should already know this.

hmmmm...ok, here's one of my reasons for being with it..

kids from poverty r trying to help their families out by working jobs. they end up not having enough time for school work and therfor cannot do as well in school..

IMPY, ur turn.

I'll join in and take the Against it side with I m p y.

To do this correctly, I must first restate what you just said.

Angel-Savy's point is that kids from poverty do not have enough time for school work because they spend their time helping out their families by working instead of studying.

I agree that anytime anyone spends time doing anything else besides studying that this will be a detriment to one's grades.

However, kids from poverty have the same God given ability to achieve in school. If they are motivated to learn, no matter what their tough circumstances, they will and can earn just as high grades as any other student.

obi: kids with motivation no matter what the circumstance can achieve in school

i do agree that if they are determined they can achieve.
however, if the kid does not understand the material, and due to their helping job they can't stay after school for help.

Hmm...
Let me understand the question here. The question is that kids from underprivileged backgrounds are not capable of achieving as much as those from privileged backgrounds.

You have stated that they cannot understand the criteria because they cannot stay after school to get extra help.

My response is that whether or not they stay after school has nothing to do with their born intelligence. If they need extra help and they cannot stay after school, then they can see their teachers at lunch. As I high school teacher, my door is always open to my students before school, at brunch, and at lunch, not just after school. In fact, I would rather see my students at lunch then after school.

I hope this will be a coherent and organized post...

The Topic:

Kids from poverty do worse in school than average kids.

The "background":

First of all, I am not entirely certain how others might define the terms of "Kids from poverty" and "average kids." So, for the sake of my arguments, I am going to start by explaining these terms as I interpret them:

Kids from poverty are those who have very little income. Most likely, these kids get free or reduced lunch, or bring their own lunches to school because their households make slightly more than the "cutoff" to qualify for free or reduced lunch. Often, the families of these students are on welfare, though not always.

Average kids are those who can afford to buy lunch everyday (though may not always be able to afford a lot of "a la carte" options) and may also have the money to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as clubs that require membership dues and/or sports where the students must pay to play (in order to cover the costs of equipment and such).

Second, we need to determine just exactly what "do worse in school" means. I am assuming that it refers to the academic achievements (such as grade point averages, number of credits, difficulty of classes, etc.)

The argument:

I do not believe that a person's financial or economical situation defines their ability to learn OR to do well in school. I believe that people make conscious choices about whether or not they are willing to live up to their potential.

While some underprivileged students do work to help support their families, this doesn't affect their ability to learn. It depends on their priorities. It may be difficult, but thousands of students work and still manage to do well in school. The fact is, average students often work during their years in high school as well.

Also, I am in the process of searching for sites we can use to gather information to use in our arguments... If anyone knows of a site that might be helpful, please post it so we can all visit...

ok, so ur said that if they need extra help, then go their teachers during lunch.

i understand that they could go do that. but, lunch is a time to eat and socialize during the school/work day.

So you are saying they would rather hangout with their friends then get help from a teacher.

Now this general truth can be said about any student, not just underprivileged ones. However, the fact that they want to eat with their friends has nothing to do with achievement.

If the desire is there they will find a way to achieve. The bottom line, as I m p y also stated, is setting priorities. If scholastics is their priority, they can and will achieve.
