I just wanted to get the opinions of everyone here, and give them a chance to poll whore as well: What did you think about the movie? Did you catch the symbolism in it? Did you like it? Hate it? Did you find it a delectable meal that tasted extra spicy if only a dab of hot sauce is added to the mix...? Ahem...What did ya' think??

I for one, was a bit dissapointed. I liked it, I did enjoy watching it...but they really stayed too far from what it was all about, which was dissapointing. They insulted Harry by saying that his character could better be portrayed by a woman, and they kind of just...mixed in things that didn't belong.

But it was, all in all, a better experience than the RE movies, which made me cry, just a little. sweatdrop They were horrible films...in my opinion anyway.

So, lets hear you opinions...on Resident...oh wait, ahem, Silent Hill! In fact, just discuss all things Silent Hill Movie related, right here in this thread, why dontcha'.

I'm just gonna get this out there, for future reference...
If any one of you says one thing about me and Rose, I swear I'm not gonna hesitate to pull out this glock and let my over-developed trigger finger take care of the rest.
I am NOT with her, in any way. End, done, enough said.

...actually, never mind. I'd like feedback.
Damn curious nature...

My opinion? It was great!

I'm not actualy allowed to play the games, apparently the games might 'frighten and disturb the young minds of my siblings' so I've only seen the movie and read over views, spoilers, and summaries for the games, but in my opinion the movie was great! It could have been better, but like I said, i liked it.

I loved it. I'm no gonna get into the whole, "Oh, it was different from the games," nonsense, because if the movie was exactly the same as the game, there would be no surprises. When adapting a game to a movie, some changes HAVE to be made.
And it's not that generally movie adaptations of games turn out bad, it's just that gamers are very a**l (for the lack of a better term) and each has their own expectation on what the noninteractive aspect of the game should be. And unless the writer/director questions every single fan of the franchise and together with the million+ of them create one storyline that everyone agrees on, then yes, there's always gonna be plenty of people disliking the movie adaptation.

But as far as movies go, Silent Hill was excellent. I went to see it in theaters 3 times, and ended up craving more. It was one of those movies which I could watch an infinite amount of times and not get sick of it. And there's only so many movies that do that to me.

Generally though, I like most game to movie adaptations. Some of them, like Super Mario Bros. is pretty awesome if you don't take it seriously. Plus I liked the cast.
But if I was to take every single game to movie adaptation seriously, then yes, Silent Hill would probably be one of the best, in terms of how well it portrayed the game experience.

I thought that it was a perfect mix of goodies for us fans and new stuff to surprise us. For a serious game to movie I think it was the best, but I agree with Biohazard that the Mario Bros. movie was also great if you didn't take it seriously. I have been a big cheerleader for Gans' version of Silent Hill and I can't wait for another one.

Well, Gans isn't gonna be working on the SH2 movie. So it can go into any direction, from here.

I can't wait for Gans' Onimusha movie, though.

I know he isn't going to be working on the second one but I did hear that he is going to give it to someone that he trusts. That is just what I have heard so don't kill the messenger if this is no longer true! biggrin

I'm not sure. I liked it as a movie, but not as an adaption. It should have been like FF: Spirits Within, a side story, and nothing more. Silent Hill leaves room for many side stories, and I think that if they wanted to change that much, they should have changed it into a side story, so it could fit into the Silent Hill universe.

You see, like mentioned, fans are very a**l. I'm very a**l. When I play a game and think "I'd like to see this as a movie" it means just that...I'm not going to the theater to get a surprise, but to see who's playing my favorite characters, and how they pulled off the creepy monsters or the environment. The Silent Hill movie was a chance to turn an undeveloped game like Silent Hill (1), into something deeper...and they failed on that chance.

Instead it was a montage to semi-fans, leaving out the hardcore base fans like myself. It seemed messily put together, and a little rushed as a result. Not to mention it was extremely confusing...>.<

All in all, they could've done better...the Silent Hill fan base is very tight knit...and it's risky to treat an adaption with as little care as they did. You probably won't find a more "a**l" fan base aside from the Final fantasy fan base.

I would love to see the producer of The Mist, along with King himself, take hold of the Silent Hill rights, and show the others how it's done. The Mist, felt like watching Silent Hill, more than watching Silent Hill, to me at least. But, I've heard it did inspire Silent Hill, after all.

It's very hard to portray such a video game, where you find notes laying around and read those notes, into a movie. It's not as easy as you might imagine.
I think Gans did a terrific job.
I mean, to be fair, EVERYTHING could be better. Everything has potential to improve.
That's why I choose to focus on things that were GOOD as opposed to things that were BAD. Even though I do think that Silent Hill was one of those movies where Good outweighed the Bad.
But that's another thing. It's like, let's say they would have interpreted the game itself into a movie. No surprises, nothing new... Then they have something to live up to. So, then the said a**l gamers will get THAT MUCH more picky about it.
But the way it is now, if I didn't like it, it wouldn't bother me, BECAUSE it's like an alternate storyline and doesn't intersect with games.
Which means, if I didn't like it, I could ignore it altogether.

Alright...seriously, what the hell is up with me with Rose? That's the most frequent pairing I've seen recently on websites.
And HOO BOY, are those fanfics explicit. burning_eyes
I think I used more bleach on my eyes than my hair when I read one of those.
It actually freaks me out, seeing as the main pairing used to be me and Harry. But, nooooo. Not anymore. Now I'm paired with some random woman who screams at the slightest bit of movement.
-sighs-

...alright, she was kinda attractive. So sue me.
Any input/ opinions on this?

Well, as you might know, a large portion of the internet crowd are perverts, and would find nothing better than a woman-woman pairing. Simple as that.
And since Rose and Cybil actually worked together, it makes heir pairing more suggestible than, say, Heather and Maria who are from completely different games, or Eileen and Cynthia who MOST likely, never actually met.

I know a guy who's writing a script for Silent Hill, he's probably one of the biggest fans of the first game ever, and he's a writer like myself. So far, it's quite a good read, and is staying beautifully faithful to the game, while not bombarding the viewer with document after document...it takes creativity, and I don't think Silent Hill (the current movie) tried as hard as they should have.

Certainly, the gamers would be on the edge of their seat, expecting everything to be just so, but in the end, the Good would outweigh the bad by far. Besides, I don't believe a writer or a director, should take on a project they feel they can't do 100% justice. Silent Hill is a tough game to keep going (the new creators of SH5 were one of the few and only people up to the challenge, other developers were too afraid to take on a game with such a dedicated fanbase), I would expect the movie to be just as difficult to make...if it was easy to make, in any form or fashion, they probably didn't try as hard as they should.

But still, I did enjoy the movie. I hope they scrap their current plans however, and accept my friends script as I would rather watch it, then a repeat of the same drama from the first movie.

@Cybil:

Oh my...well, I think Bio said it best, "a large portiion of the internet crowd are perverts". Simple, and true...and sad. With any female in any game/anime/cartoon/tv show/movie...you have the chance of something sexual being released about it. And since same-sex relations appeal to many people, girls and guys alike, you're likely to see that as well. I saw their relationship as a very sweet friendship, a girl who you thought was tough (Cybil) turned out to be the one needing comfort, and Rose, formerly they coward, turned out to be the sensible one (after Pyramid Head's appearance).

It was great dynamic in characters, and really helped bring the two together (as friends). It was a good story, and a good way to develop characters...that's all...but in today's society, perverted individuals want to see it as more than that.

Well, you think it's a good script, and I might too, but we're fans of the series. But when making a movie, you have to try and appeal to people unfamiliar with the franchise as well.
I mean, when a person plays Silent Hill for the first time, it's the horror aspect of it that intrigues more than anything. THEN the storyline becomes something you fall in love with.
But when someone who's never played the game goes to see the movie version of the game. Not only might some things confuse them, but obviously without interactivity, the movie isn't gonna be as scary, then it'll be just another horror flick.
That's the problem, you have to appeal not only to fans of the game, but to people who never played it as well. And do you honestly know how those people feel? I mean, you're a fan of the game. So am I. So I honestly can't say that I'd enjoy the direct adaptation of the game in the movie, if I wasn't a fan of the series.
Like I said, I simply choose to focus on the good things, when I watch movies. And I am happier for it. ^_^

I just found it funny how Cybil's and Rose's roles reversed. That it was Rose that had to be the stronger of the two, and tell Cybil, "It's gonna be okay," when Cybil is the police officer.

((...it's scary how true that is.
I hate the truth a lot of times. No, lemme rephrase that. I hate admitting the truth, especially when it comes to my faults or insecurities.
Actually, my entire lifestyle and personality is basically the same as hers. It's actually kind of sad how much I can relate to her.
...just look at the most recent entry in my log/journal. You'll understand..,))
