As many of you fans of the Discworld novels may already know, Terry Pratchett has Alzheimer's Disease. Here's a video clip (1 of 2) on Youtube, where he discusses the disease:

I was actually quite shocked to here that he'd been diagnosed with it. What will the fans of Sf/Fantasy humor do when he passes on, or can no longer write? Who will continue to carry the torch? Are there any authors whom you think are on their way to establishing legacies in Sf/Fantasy humor?

I don't think anybody will be able to really replace Terry Pratchett, just like there'll never really be another Douglas Adams. Terry's been my favorite author for years (I have nearly the entire Discworld series), and I was shocked to hear he'd been diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

Have you heard about Match it for Pratchett? Terry donated one million dollars to the Alzheimer's research foundation, and the fans are trying to get everybody to donate one dollar each to match the amount for the foundation. Think there'd be enough people interested at Geek*Kon that we could have some sort of collection for that? If I'm here for Geek*Kon (my plans for next year are still up in the air until I hear back from grad schools), I'd be willing to run it!

I'll check with the other staffers, but I think it's a great idea. We actually got around $400 or so in donations from the first con.

I didn't know there was a collection or anything going around at the first con! That should definitely be a part of the next Geek*Kon, though. If visitors haven't heard of Terry Pratchett, that's a good time to start, and it's for a good cause!
