Hardly a mile from where she had woken up, Julia forged her way through the brush with great swings of her stick, each tiny cut and scrape only adding to her fury. If she hadn't been so angry, exhaustion and fear would make her drop on the spot; as it was she was lucky for the weight of the stick, which yanked her forward a step with every swing. The sun beat down from its highest point in the sky, making her hot, itchy and even more furious - if that was possible. Plus, her new shoes were filthy.

Who the hell had done this? Warren and Janet had to be behind this - what would be the use to a kidnapper in dropping here out in the middle of nowhere and just taking off?

Whoever did this would be sorry.

But they would have to wait. A particularily hearty swing sent the stick flying from her hands. It hit a tree and dropped to the ground. She crouched down to pick it up, but her legs chose the opportunity to buckle, sending her thumping to the ground next to her weapon.

'Maybe a break wouldn't hurt.' Julia winced. The impact had made all of her aches start complaining...any break couldn't possibly hurt more than that.

It was a quiet enough day in the forest. And Alex had decided to try and learn the lay of the land, mostly because it was either that, or do something constructive like trying to figure out why he was in this world, and how he was going to get home.

Changing hadn't really changed the pilot, as he moved around trees and through the brush. He perched atop a fallen tree, as he watched small prey scurry about the underbrush. Ok, maybe it had changed him a little, because his tail twitched with excitement as he watched a squirrel looking for nuts, under some leaves. His tail twitched faster, and he leaped from his spot, and about half a second before hitting the ground, the realization of what he was doing hit him like a truck.

He landed on all four, chuckling a bit, as the squirrel bolted off, up a tree. The embarrassment set in, slowly standing up. It was the sound of a crash of wood and flesh that caused his ears to perk up.

"Huh?", he muttered to himself, as he made his way over towards the sound of distress. If he was lucky, it was a wounded animal. Oh sure, its not like he had any weapon to attack a wounded animal with, but hey, it was a chance.

The noise of the stick covered the sound of Alex's pounce, but there was no hiding the fact that something was coming in this direction. Bushes rustled, leaves crackled - Julia sat upright, automatically reaching for the stick. The rough wood was reassuring under her nervous fingers. Making as little noise as possible, she picked herself up from the forest floor and took what she hoped was a threatening stance.

Wild animal or kidnapper, it was going to get one hell of a welcome.

It wasn't long before Alex had come across the sound of the disturbance. Oh, sure, he wasn't very stealthy as he made his approach, but he did try, as he peaked over and around some folleage.

Alex raised an eyebrow as he spotted the elderly lady as she sat on the forest floor. He smiled, and raised his scaled hand in something of a wave. "Uh, are you ok, Miss?", he asked.

Maybe Alex had been spending too much time with Damian and Jade, but he wasn't really remembering the fact that his ears were a bit more pointed than they should be, and his hands were sporting scales and short talons. At least Julia wouldn't be seeing his tail. Maybe she wouldn't notice his altered state, yet.

{Julia: Elderly?!! scream Oh, you are asking for a beating!

She's actually 30 xd }

The arrival turned out to be human. Oddly enough, he didn't look anything like a kidnapping thug, but then her eyes went to the goggles around his neck. A pilot? That would explain how they'd gotten so far from the city...

"Cut the crap." Julia snapped, pointing the stick warningly at Alex's chest. "You know exactly what's wrong, so don't pretend I'm stupid." Some warning bells went off in her head as she studied him closer, noticing his odd hands and misshapen ears. Ugh. He'd probably been the one to drag her off the plane - which was just great if he had some disgusting disease.

"Just name your price." she said more quietly. "This has gone on long enough."
PostPosted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 7:19 pm

{Alex: Eeep! Well, you know, thats like 3 years older than me. razz Thats practically ancient. Then again, thats like 3 years in airplane years. wink }

Ok, this wasn't going well. He looked at Julia's stick, then her spot on the ground, then her stick once more. "Woah now. You've gotten this all wrong, lady." He sighed and guessed he wasn't going to get anywhere with just pleading his case that he hadn't kidnapped her. So, that left one option open to him still.

And with that, he walked over and around the foliage that had separated them and moved over to find a spot to sit down on the ground. He made it a point to not hide his tail, letting it twitch behind him as he sat down. "Let me guess. You're not from around here. Its sokay. A lot of us seem to be rather angry when we first get here."

He thought a bit, running his clawed fingers through his hair and looked over to Julia. "My name's Alex Barrett. I'd offer you my hand to help you up, but.. uh... well, I'm not what you'd call normal. So yeah, who are you?"

He wasn't sure what else to do. He couldn't make her listen. All he could try to do was pose as little a threat to her as possible, and hope that she'd be more stunned at his appearance than to complain about her situation. Only one way to try.

{Julia: Uh huh. stare Well, Alex (or whatever your real name is), I hope you remember this when someone 'ancient' comes over and tears your legs off for talking too much /<

^
l
*totally acting like a grumpy old crone right now, but dares you to point that out*}

The stick followed Alex wherever he walked, like a compass. He was still playing the stupid card - fine, they could do that. But she wasn't going to let her guard down. One phrase of his, though, made her wonder. "A lot of us seem to be rather angry when we first get here." "Us?" Julia repeated suspiciously. 'Us' meant they were somehow alike. A kidnapper wouldn't say something like that.

Add in the weird details (was that a tail? it sure looked like it) and they added up to a picture she did not like one bit.

"Oh?" Julia lifted an eyebrow and glanced at his scaled hands, hoping he got the message: even if he offered a hand up, she wouldn't dream of taking it. Horrible. "You aren't learning a thing until I'm convinced. What's the story?"

Alex sat there a bit, and sighed. Why is it he always seemed to run into people who thought he was a drunk, a sinner, a kidnapper, or all three at once? The thoughts running through his head made his ears move slightly down, his tail still twitching.

"Its too bad Jade's not here for this conversation", he sighed about, indeed wishing that the talking, floating horse was there to talk with the lady. Talking horses were great ice-breakers, or at least he assumed they would be. "But anyways, like I said, I'm Alex Barrett. I run a small cargo company out of Manila. And let me guess, you fell through a sea of colors before you found yourself deposited out here in this forest. Happened to all of us, or most of us anyways. Actually, Damien ended up in the church, but thats different."

He shook his head. His mind was wandering from one topic to another, and he looked back to the lady and her stick. "Would you mind not pointing that thing at me, please? Seriously, do I give off that creepy I'm Going To Get You, Muhahaha feel? Its like folks want me to have a complex or something."

Alex erfed as he realized his train of thought had shifted once more. "Shuh-MUH*. Ok, back to the topic on hand. We're not anywhere close to home, and we're still working on finding out how to get home. Any questions so far?"

"I didn't." she replied stubbornly. But then she thought about it; what were her last memories before waking up here? Julia cast about in her mind for them, and what she found made her go pale. And with her Scandanavian descent and fondness for the indoors, that was very pale indeed.

"Actually..." She coughed, mind filled with the swirling images of the void. "Maybe that did happen, yes." The more Alex talked, the more innocent he seemed; maybe it was the drooping ears that did it. Mandy always wore that expression when she got yelled at.

Julia gave in and dropped the stick. The lack of it made her uneasy. To hide that, she folded her hands in her lap and wound her fingers tightly together. "If you really were the shady type, you'd do your best -not- to look creepy." she said wryly. Maybe in Alex's world people were clearly defined, but the monsters she knew always hid their true colors.

in response to his request for questions, Julia just shook her head. Not in the negative, though - just amazement he had to ASK if she had questions. Of course! Like who was this mysterious 'us' - he still hadn't answered that one - who were Jade and Damien, where on earth was this place, and why did he have a tail for Gods' sakes?

"When you say home, you mean the United States?" He must be from America and just work overseas; how else could he take two places from two different sides of the world and lump them together as 'home'? Hopefully he'd only guessed she was from America, and didn't actually know where she lived. The kidnapping story still had some merit.

Well, at least he wasn't being threatened with a stick. That was a bonus. He smiled just a bit, his ears perking up, tail twitching. He ran his claws through his hair, brushing it back over his pointed ears and the small feathers he had there. "Uh, no questions?" The pilot looked around the area some, then back to Julia.

"Well, I'm actually from California. Long Beach originally but I moved overseas and started my own shipping company. Its been over a year since I've been back over to see my folks though. Was running relief supplies out to Indonesia back when the tsunami struck. Was pretty good business, considering." He sighed a bit as he thought about his beloved PBY. It had been what, a month since he'd been able to smell the warm fuel vapors and oil off the large prop engines.

He closed his eyes, taking a deep breath, and then looked over to Julia. "Anyways, this place is called Athlaias, or thats what the locals call it anyways. Looks a lot like some sort of Robin Hood movie, but I was more of an WW2 movie watcher myself. There's a town called Loghedge about 10 to 12 miles from here, but uh... well... I doubt they'd take kindly to my current... uh... altered form."

Alex sat there and smiled, "As for not being shady, you'd think me having a tail and feathers would be consider creepy." He reached behind him to grab ahold of his tail. "I'm still trying to figure out what this is about though, although I've got a good hunch that the Church is behind it. Too bad I can't get anywhere close to town now." There he goes, being distracted again.

It was amazing how the man could talk for 10 minutes and yet say nothing at all. Julia played with a lock of blond hair, not bothering to conceal her disinterest in Alex's reminiscing. Until he mentioned Loghedge, that was. Then she sat bolt upright, a look of total disbelief on her face.

"You mean there's a town nearby? Do you...how could..." she sputtered. "How could you forget to MENTION that?! The sun's going down!"

Forget the stupid tail. Oh, and also his muttering about how the townsfolk would react badly to his strange looks; might as well forget that too. The stick may have been set aside for a little while, but Julia immediately snatched it up and pointed it at him imperiously.

"Forget the questions for now. You are going to lead the way there. Got it?" If he didn't, there was always the threat of legal trouble to back it up. She had no idea how useless that was in their current situation.
PostPosted: Thu Apr 10, 2008 4:43 am

Ok, so he had a few issues with concentrating without his mind wandering lately. It wasn't his fault, honest. He'd just had a few issues since he'd changed. Thats all. The fact that Julia wanted to go to town didn't really suprise him, although the loudness of her demands did, his ears twitching.

"If you reaaaaaally want to go to town, I'll point you in the right direction. Tsai boo shr* I'm leading you there, though. I left the town before I could get in trouble for having a tail and feathers, and there's no way I'm going back there just so the guards or the Church can poke me with a spear if I do."

He folded his arms and shook his head. "Only place I'm going is back to camp." His clawed fingers tapped against the leather sleeves of his jacket.

Alex frowned some, "Whatever brought you here brought me here, and that means you're going to change at some point." He was pretty sure the Church was involved, since they had brought Damien to the world, and he'd changed, but it didn't quite make sense why folks were ending up in the forest and not in a nice cell under the Church.

Still, if she wanted to go to town, he wasn't going to stop her. And with that, he pointed off in a direction. "Just head that way. You'll come to a river. Just follow it south and you'll come to Loghedge eventually."

Julia shook her head. "The Church'll be the least of your worries if you don't." Talk about paranoid. Sure, plenty of people didn't like churches and had a problem against religion in general, but that didn't mean they were going to lock Alex up behind bars. She waited for a moment, but it didn't look like he planned on budging anytime soon.

"That's just great." she hissed. She slapped the stick back against the ground and rose to her feet, not even looking at Alex, off into the woods. The way he said lead to the river looked exactly the same as everything else. Without a doubt, as soon as he had gone back to this 'camp' she'd be lost.

Even sticking with a paranoid freak of nature sounded better than a night all alone in the forest.

"Where..." Julia choked down the irritation in her voice. "Where is this camp of yours, then?" She eyed him discreetly, more disturbed by his strange looks than before. Scaled hands and deformed ears could be explained away by a disease, and a birth defect for the tail, but where on earth did the feathers come from?

Nothing added up, and it was starting to wear at her. There had to be some explanation, some sort of logic that would bring sense to this situation.

Oh, Alex could be stubborn if he wanted to, especially when it came to not going back to town. He didn't want to have a run in with the guards or the Church, and maybe he was being paranoid on some level, but he also had claws, feathers, and a tail, so maybe a little paranoia was allowed.

He slowly took off his coat, the feathers at his elbows visible even moreso than the ones near his ears. "Its a few miles away, but its closer than town." He held his coat with one hand, letting it rest against his back as he started to walk off in a different direction.

"As for the camp, its not really 'mine'. Its a friend's. Damian. He's a nice guy, although... uh... well..." How did you go about telling someone that the owner of a camp was a tall werewolf/croc-looking beast that had a snake for a tongue, and not seem like a total lunatic.

So, Alex just said the first thing he could think of, "Damian's different. So try not to be surprised, okay?"

And with that, he started to walk slowly towards where the camp would be. If he was going to have to lead the paranoid lady who still hadn't given him her name and used a stick to help with walking, he might as well walk slow enough that she could keep up. "Maybe Damian can give you his story when we get there. Or Jade. Something tells me you'll probably like Jade more. Hope she's still near the campsite."

Anyways, back to walking, and avoiding getting hit in the face with low hanging tree limbs.
