Banzai actually originated in ancient China. It was brought into Japan later. It meant, "long live the emperor!" More recently, it's used to mean, "long life!" In Japan, it's used as a word of encouragement, as in, "you'll live through it!" You could also hear it as, "be strong along the tough road ahead!"
