The most world known fish from the Amazon is the piranha, the fish that is most deadly, its all exxagerated, piranhas are mostly quite shy, even the best known one, the red-bellied piranha, a show was filming a person swimming in a school of piranhas, another person offscreen had to herd them torwards the person, they mainly eat fruits and veggies and a little meat but the most dangerous fish is not from the piranha family.

Another (dangerous?) one is the spotted piranha, and ironically, people EAT them too, and most species are considered good eating where native.

The fish from the Amazon that caused a HUGE phenomenon was the neon tetra. Remember the airship Hindenburg? (if you don't know what it was look it up) some specimens were on it shortly before its tragic crash. They caused such a rumpus of excitement in France and Germany for some reason....

I know about the airships' explosion due to its volatile fuel , but not about the fish being involved... How about the neon disease though, that's pretty sad too...

(late reply) The neon Tetra disease is one that cannot be cured, it is when a Neon Tetra gets a dark spot on the neon line, immediately remove the fish and destroy it, The least painful way for you to put the fish down is to freeze it, while freezing it, the fish's metabolism slows down and it doesn't die painfully. You have to remove it because, even when it is the only kind in its tank, other tetras can catch it too!

That's what makes it so sad, some don't even get the chance to reach their full size before they contract the disease... This is why I raise lizards now, they don't get sick as easily as some fish, but the fish in the Amazon are pretty tough regardless!

Not all of them Anolis, there are also hatchetfishes to deal with, they are very fragile and I have only seen them in 1 store so far. they are most definitely known for their jumping, one recorded jump was 16 feet total in eek 1 eek jump.

I've seen them in my aquarium books, but I think I've seen them in a pet shop once or twice...

One very rare fish that is hard to find is the spraying characin, this fish is very special because they actually jump out of water to lay their eggs, the male hides nearby and every 15 minutes comes out to wet them.

maybe that provides more dissolved oxygen for the eggs?

That is one answer but they get splashed because of the main reason, to stay wet like all eggs.

A very costly fish back then was the discus fish, you would have to pay 100 or 125 for just one fish, and just about the only way to get it back then was to go straight to the Amazon, nowadays, very few pet shops stock it so you would have to go to a specialty store or order online.

And its also a very difficult fish to keep, it can get sick so easily and requires acidic water as well. The best way to find them is during the dry season in the acidic pools.

And the locals that live nearby will gladly help you by taking you to the fishing grounds and catch some fish, and among those, you can choose which one you want, they throw the rest in, but sometimes they throw them into the bushes or take them home and fry them for dinner.
