I've been looking around a few crocheting communities for some suggestions for this, but haven't found anything promising yet. So, I'll try here. My fingers get sore if I crochet for a prolonged period because my finger pads rub against the flattened area of the hook with the embossed writing (Boye aluminum hooks) as I work. I've heard about foam rubber hook cushion things, but can't find them at any of the craft stores near my house. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a temporary, homemade solution until I can afford to order some online, like some kind of tape to put around the hook's handle or something? Any suggestions are appreciated!

I know what you're talking about. I actually have one, and as soon as I bought it, I think Susan Bates stopped making them. I've looked online, and now I can only find them for lace-size hooks. They've always been hard to find, but more so in the last year or two. They're actually made for carpal tunnel.
You could try looking online. I think Susan Bates made the one I have, but I don't remember.
If you're just looking to cover the writing, I'd just use some duct tape or something, rather than scouring around for the rubber grips.

Haha, that's just my luck that they'd go out of production around the time I pick up crochet and actually need them. Maybe I can find a deal on ebay or something. Hmm, I suppose tape would work in the short term. I'm a bit iffy about using duct tape on the hooks because of the gunk that's left behind. I've heard electrical tape works well sometimes so I may try that. Thanks! limoria look in the school supplies section of your grocery store. the pencil grips work just as well for holding crochet hooks. i usualy buy mine after the big back-to-school rush is over and get a pack of 4 for 50 cents or less I thought about those, actually, but I didn't figure they were small enough to fit on mid-sized hooks. I guess I'll grab a pack and try them out. Thanks!

I think I have seen those grips at my Jo-Ann store before. I have also heard of people molding their own out of sculpey but I've never tried it. I just got one of the Clover Soft Touch hooks and I love it. They are a little expensive, like $6 each but if you find yourself using the same size hook most of the time then it's not so bad. I am definitely buying more next time I go to the craft store.

I am definitely buying more next time I go to the craft store. Yeah, I checked my local Jo-Ann store, but they only had foam needle/hook tip protectors, no grip thingies. They have them available on their site, though, so I may just break down and get one of those. Those Clover soft touch hooks look nice, but I don't remember seeing them at the store. I might've missed them because I was focusing mostly on the Boye hooks, so I may just have to go to Jo-Ann and/or Michaels and check again. Thanks for pointing those out!

I just bought some foam grips from joann.com. I checked out the brick and mortar store first and they had practically nothing for crochet there. I think joann.com is having a sale on knit and crochet supplies right now too.
As for temporary solutions, I've heard of foam tape before but I don't know where one would buy such a thing. There is a thread on Ravelry in the CLF group that has information about molding hook grips from sculpey.

Most of what fiber craft supplies they had were for knitting and those... weird loom thingies. I did see them on the site, and if there's a sale going on, I may just buy some. As for Ravelry, I'm still waiting for my invite. sad

Go to Herrschners or yarn collection.com. They have foam grips for crochet hooks, 2 per package at $3.99. This is an 2009 catalog but they should still sell them. Hope it helps!
