I often see .mkv movie files and have a real problem watching them on linux... MPlayer most of the time either can't read the sound... or can't see the subtitles <.< as for VLC doesn't matter how many times i try to configure the subtitles... i can't fullscreen the movie that the subtitles get huge and don't fit the movie... <.< help help help ;_;

I have not dealt with .mkv files before, but if Mplayer, VLC, and Xine can't read it then the only other thing to try is convert it to something else transcode or ffmpeg maybe your best bet in this.

Well as for a player the best thing that is suggested is VLC, maybe open a bug report with them about the subtitle problem, in the mean time you can use ffmpeg. Sorry can't be of much use but I don't bother with .mkv's
Edit: Have you tried a xine based player? Xine has support for several audio and video formats and a lot of times people under estimate it.

Hmm... MKV usually works for me with the players you suggested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_media_players#Container_format_support As you can see, VLC, MPlayer, Totem, and Xine all support it.
MKV is a very awesome container though, and as with most awesome containers it can hold a variety of video and audio formats, I think the real question is what video and audio formats do your Matroska files contain?
