"Where did they go?" the brunette murmured to herself as she roamed the early morning halls. She was tall but not too tall with a slim figure. Her hair was pulled back in a ponytail and she wore boot cut blue jeans with a red tank top and red flip-flops. A black messenger bag was slung over her shoulder casually and she was looking around carefully for her best friends. "Joe~ Oli~" she called, "It's Mel~" Melanie had been unable thus far to find the boys. Perhaps it was because it was still somewhat early, but that didn't occur to her. The few people in the hallway glanced at her when she called out, but she didn't seem to care. She was too focused, apparently. Despite having just seen the two guys within the last week, she hadn't seen them in school yet. It was the first day, and she was about ninety percent sure they had first period together. Even if they didn't she would hang out around their classroom for as long as possible. That was just what they did, or at least it was what Melanie did. She had known Joseph and Oliver for years and they were her favorite people. The girl had somewhat of a lack of female friends but she couldn't care less. Who needed girl friends anyway? It seemed like not long ago they'd been going into middle school together. Melanie sighed nostalgically, almost forgetting her goal for a moment. Almost reflexively, she focused on the hallway once more. She had to find them. "Joe~ Oli~"
It wasn't really all that big. The last one had been much larger, and there had been more people, too. In all honesty, Robin preferred his new school, but he knew better than to get too comfortable with it. This was the second time he had moved since he'd started high school. Sure, this time there had been promises he could stay until graduation but they were empty promises as far as the boy was concerned. His backpack was empty aside from some paper and stuff to write with; it was only the first day and the boy highly doubted he needed much. Silently, Robin Bishop walked the hallways. It was still early and not many people had arrived yet. That was just fine for the boy. He wasn't all that fond of social interaction anyway. It wasn't that he didn't want friends... He just didn't know how to start. He had grown accustomed to moving around frequently, and friends only seemed to cause problems. Naturally, because of this, the boy had never really gotten close to anybody, nor had he ever been romantically involved. No, the redhead was much more comfortable just blending into the crowd. Or completely avoiding it if possible. Now... Which classroom was it again...? Despite the school being pretty small compared to his last one, it was still easy to get lost in it seemed. Good thing he had plenty of time.

Side-by-side, the two boys pushed their way through the school's main double-doored entrance. Physically, they looked like they could be night and day to each other; the one that was half a head taller had a messy, corn-blond mop of hair that could have looked like it belonged to a surfer, while the one beside him had a head covered in slick raven-black locks. The blond's wide brown eyes sparkled in anticipation of the new High School year to come as he shared a joke of some sort, but his blue-eyed friend didn't nearly look as thrilled about being at the school. The weather in their small town had already began to get colder and colder in the small American town, but the blond only wore a loose overcoat over his baggy white tee-shirt (along with camo-pattern knee-shorts). The raven-head was bundled up in his trusty warm black sweater, the same one as he had worn the year before in 8th grade, as well as the year before that in 7th... Well, at least he was wearing a brand new longsleeve shirt underneath it, as well as a new pair of light-washed jeans). The shorter one had had his growth-spurt in grade school, too early. Blondie was just beginning to shoot up now- over the summer, he had already began domination over the darker-haired boy height-wise. It wasn't just just an outside appearance that kept the two teens apart; their believes did, too. Although the sweater-boy's mother was laughed at by him behind her back as a "religious nut". Every Sunday held another long morning when she spent countless hours in Church... It nearly drove him insane of what he could and couldn't do! Giving up something for Lent every year- Ah, what a pain that was! He envied the blond's loose-form of the Jewish tradition when he had gotten a huge party for his thirteenth birthday! However, Joseph Roberts (the blond) and Oliver Leslie (the raven-head) were the best of friends. They'd known one another through preschool so many years ago... One thing boys had in common was that they had been born relatively close to the town, and had lived there for all of their life. They'd been inseparateable(sp?) for quite some time... until the later years of grade school, that was. Around there had been the time that Joe (as he preferred to be called) and Oliver had met Melanie. Two musketeers had quickly become three, and they'd been just as tightly knit as before.
Joe was the kind of guy who could get the mood around him to lighten up, to make everybody laugh at some sort of joke. Any chance he'd get was another one to socialize, whether it be in the middle of class or after school sitting in front of his PS2 with a larger group of friends (including the two other "musketeers"), he'd do it. If he didn't even like a person, the boy would make it clear that as clear as day by addressing them loudly... With all the things that bothered Joe, he made sure to get that point across. Thankfully, he liked Oliver and Melanie. Joe laughed at his own joke, elbowing Oliver in the shoulder harder then he intended to. Homework could always be left off until the last minute, in Joe's eyes, where then it could be only partially completed. After all, wasn't he entitled to skipping just one or two or three, itsy bisty math questions...? They'd go over them in class, anyways. This had resulted in poorer grades for Joe, normally around a C+ average... That was enough to keep him on the soccer team, which made it a good enough grade for him. Grades and soccer were yet again another thing Oliver didn't have in common with his best friend. It wasn't like he didn't like the sport or anything, or his grades were too low to keep him on the team... No, Oliver's mother kept him too in-line to let him get anywhere below the 'B' range (why he wasn't so thrilled about moving onto high school where there'd be more work)... It was just he couldn't keep himself interested in actually playing (no matter how hard Joe tried to get him to like it). Even though Joe tried his best to socialize Oliver as much as himself, Oliver liked being in the group of just them three... It demolished the risk that somebody might go talking trash behind his back (as he intentionally heard some words being said about Joe). It pained Oliver that he couldn't tell him- but what else could he do? Olive knew that Mel and Joe would never talk about him- right? That's what best friends were supposed to do! "Did you hear Mel?" Oliver asked as he adjusted the bursting backpack on his back. He could have sworn he'd heard the girl's voice calling out their nicknames...

"There you are!" came a voice as the brunette rushed down the hallway. She situated herself between the two boys, placing an arm over each one's shoulders. "Good morning~" she sung to her best friends. Melanie's blue-green eyes were vivid with excitement; she was a morning person, and thrilled about their first day of high school. "Where were you two hiding at?" she accused playfully, taking her arm off of Joseph long enough to tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear before replacing it around the boy. Height-wise, Melanie was about the same height as Oliver, possibly almost an inch taller, but it wasn't too inconvenient to lean on both of them at once.

Joseph's brace-wired grin only increased when the girl placed herself in the middle of him and Oliver. "Dude- where were you hiding? That's the question I wanna ask! Me and Oli- we were just chillin' along, totally lost on where you were, Mel!" the blond laughed again, hugging his arm around her hip instead of giving her a punch on the shoulder. Taking his free hand, the blond boy reached ahead of Mel to ruffle the bangs of her chocolate brown hair. He could almost smell the shampoo from over here... The scent was enchanting, almost bewildering on how she could get something that wasn't food to smell that good. "Yo- if you were wondering where we were, why didn't you call me up? You have me and Oli's number, you moron!" Joe gave the girl another squeeze before releasing her again. Having this situation getting awkward and silent was not on the top of Joe's to-do list! And that wasn't sarcasm (neither was this (really))! How was she not able to see it? How did she not want to make a move on him first? Joseph had only known and had a crush on Melanie for how long now...? Too long. Too freakin' long to not have anything done about it! Was she oblivious? Was he too friendly to her if he wanted to mean more then just a friend? What would happen to Mister Third-wheel over there? Joe didn't want to leave Oli out or behind... but hell, he couldn't help it if he wanted to make out with their other best friend! He couldn't help what he thought about, what he dreamed about... And hell, Joe didn't want to help it, either! Besides... They could all still be friends, right? Joe had had one or two girlfriends in the last year of Middle School, but none of them had been serious, and none had lasted longer then a month.
"Mel~" Oliver only chuckled, rolling his eyes. The second she had propelled herself onto his back, it had been sort of a shock... But in no time, he'd gotten use to it. "Don't go jumping us like that! Jesus Christ, you were like, some sort of stalker for a moment there!" the boy's hands had flung out off of his backpack and out ahead of him when her arms had come down all of a sudden. "Don't go scaring me like that! I'm tired, Mel; today was supposed to be a sleeping day... I don't have to go to Church, or anything! If it was summer, I'd still be in bed!" Out of the three of them, Oliver wasn't much of a morning person. He wasn't as grumpy as some people could get in the mornings... but still, waking up and getting changed first thing to go to school on a no-Church day wasn't fun. Heck, waking up early and getting changed first thing on a Church day wasn't fun! It took another few moments, but when Melanie didn't get off of him, he placed his arm around her shoulder as well. Joe had his hand around her too, right...? Oliver couldn't quite tell too clearly; the backpack was in his way from looking over his shoulder. "Hey, do you know what classes we have first? ... I haven't gotten around to looking at my schedule yet." the raven-haired boy admitted, sheepishly grinning. It was the morning- how the hell did they expect him to cope with a brand new schedule for a brand new school? If they had been going into another year Middle School, then he would at least have known the building's layout. "Is there anybody new?" Oliver asked a new question. Since their town was relatively small, a new face was a big deal. If there was... then who'd they hang out with? That would make all the difference in the world to define who they were! "I hope so!" Joe hadn't gotten to his schedule yet, either, and so was glad to answer on a different topic.

When Oliver put his arm around her, Melanie's heart skipped a beat, though she didn't show it. As Joseph had guessed, she was oblivious; all she saw was Oli. Joe could have kissed her then and there and she probably still would have paid more attention to the dark-haired boy. Well, maybe not, but the point was still valid! Melanie had probably been crushing on Oli as long as Joe had been crushing on her, and none of them seemed to notice any of these crushes at all. Still, it may have been better that way. "I don't know if there's any new kids," she answered Oliver, "But I hope so, too." She paused before answering he first question, it having slipped her mind momentarily. "I haven't looked at my schedule yet, either. I probably haven't even got it yet; wouldn't surprise me."

The dark-haired boy shrugged, retracting his arm off of Melanie when he noticed that Joe had done so. He didn't want the situation to turn out for the worse; loosing Melanie's friendship was more then he wanted to bear. Joe and Mel had become a part of him over time, truly making him feel like a "musketeer". Anything he could do to preserve their friendship- anything at all, he'd do! Oliver hadn't had a girlfriend yet. His mother wasn't too keen on it, but that wasn't what was stopping him. Loosing his friendship and the time he spent with them to some sort of relation with somebody else (which might not even last long) was too risky of a chance for Oliver to want to take. Good thing he hadn't had a crush or anything like that; just descriptions of what kinds of sinful things 'being in love' could bring was too painful! Sure, Oliver wasn't as crazy about religion as his mother was... but that was the way he had been brought up, and the way he was taught to believe. Hopefully, when he was a father, he wouldn't force his kids to think the same way... As of the present, there was nothing that could be done about that. "Should we go to the office? You know... we could get our schedules and check the lists to see if there's anybody new at the same time." Oliver offered, forcing a smile on his lips. It was too early for him to want to contribute any better ideas. He could already guess what Joe's response would be... And oh, there went Joe's lower jaw as he opened it to talk already! "You mean the enemy base?! No way, dude! I swear- the teachers all eat the poor innocent minds out of babies in there! I bet they have like, a fridge in the back stuffed with dead babies and plots from the 1600s on how to torture us! And I bet they also, like, freeze the minds of the teachers from back then so they can teach us now! Seriously- how do you think Mrs. F could have gotten that old?" Joe raised both of his eyebrows at the far-fetched story he had come up with. As stupid as it had sounded, Joe made a serious face like it had a chance at being the truth. "How else would they give me a B- in English? That class, is like, impossible to get any less than an 'A-' on! I know that evil Mrs. F is up to something... Thank God that she's not going to be our teacher anymore! That devil lady hates me!" Joseph ranted on, throwing both his arms up in the air. It was like him to put on a little show like this, and trash-talk the teachers when they could be just down the hall... Would Melanie giggle? Out of the corner of his eye, Joe saw Oliver's lips lift up into a smile.

As the blond had hoped, Melanie laughed at him. "Joe, you're so dumb~" she spoke with another giggle. She took her arms from around the boys' shoulders and linked them with their arms instead. The same strand of hair had come loose, but this time she simply tossed her head to move it. Not such a good idea, as it had only loosened up more strands. "How about this, then?" she began, looking to Joseph, "Oli and I can go into the office, and I'll pick up your schedule for you. Does that work?" It worked for Mel. She could get her schedule and be alone with Oliver. She loved Joe and treasured his and Oli's friendship more than anything in the world, but that couldn't help what she felt for Oliver. Each day it grew stronger... Was that too mushy to think? Melanie supposed it didn't matter. It wasn't like she was about to confess to him. As sad as it was, she would not make the first move.

The boy grinned back at the two shorter students, glad his plan had worked. And what now- Mel had her arm linked with him! There was no way he'd back away from going into the office so he could see if Melanie (and Oliver) had any classes with him! Even if it meant walking straight into enemy hands... He was going in there arm-in-arm with Mel. Right now, if Joe were to choose one time to die, it'd be right now after he'd heard her laugh at his joke... Joseph held up both of his hands, palms facing out and fingers sticking up. "Hey, I'll come with both you guys... Who else will be there to tell you I told you so, or save you from their dead baby eating powers?" What would happen if that new kid was a guy? ... What would happen if Mel was totally hot for him? Although he would probably try and associate a new kid with the rest of the grade, he needed to make sure that nobody would get to Melanie. How long did they have before classes begun? There was too little time to get him and Melanie alone... He wouldn't do that while Oliver was near by, though! He couldn't betray his bff Oli like that! It was so awkward to be caught in a web between them like this... To say one thing, Joe was certainly torn. "Okay, then." a more full smile was produced off of Oliver's lips. It was good that both Melanie and Joseph wanted to come with him; that way, they could all find out their schedules together, like had been done the years before. Always together... Nothing could get in the way of their friendship! "C'mon, guys~ I'm starting to walk faster then you, and I'm being a tired lazy a**." he teased, sticking out his tongue at the girl and the boy. He picked up his pace, pulling Joe and Melanie along in toe with them. Since she had connected them all with her arms, it would be hard to walk if one was going fast while the others were going slow. That was just what Oliver intended to do... "Hurry! You two are so slow, and this is coming from somebody who's not even a morning person!" he added on, giving a light tug on Mel's arm. "Don't you two want to see what classes we have together?"

Giving another laugh, Melanie skip-hopped to catch up with Oli, and pulled Joe along with her. Sure, she had been hoping to be alone with Oliver, but she was pefectly happy being with both of them. She pulled on Joe's arm a little harder to speed him up some more. "Hurry~" she insisted.

Oliver and Joseph caught level with Melanie, but that didn't stop Oli, either. He didn't want to be late for classes on the first day of school! What would his mother think? She'd certainly scold him for not doing as he was told, and would probably say that karma would get him for his sins in the end... Oliver wasn't sure what sin being late for class fell under (maybe Sloth?), but he didn't want to be called it by his mother! Oliver's pace came to a sudden halt as he entered the school's office; there were teachers there... Teachers who could hold him in for detention, who had control over the next four years of his life... They were in command of what classes he attended (though his grades gave them their limits). "No hats in school, please." one of the secrataries(sp?) muttered from behind her desk. She didn't give a second glance up at Oliver, as she continued to file her papers. "No running in the halls, please... I assume you three came here for your schedules and lockers, just like the rest of the school?" the grown, grey-haired lady wasn't looking at all pleased with having to deal with a bunch of kids all day. She readjusted her glasses, sliding them up the bridge of her nose where they had slipped down. Joe reached over Melanie's head, snatching off Oliver's hat. "Yeah, Oli~ No hats in school~" he echoed with a mocking eye roll. The smile remained on his lips, a signal that he'd give back the hat after they'd left the dungeons of doom with the precious treasure and the Princess and Noble Steed intact. It was almost amusing how Oliver hadn't reacted to when Joe grabbed his hat; did he really care that much about what him mother might rant him on if he put one toe out of line? Whatever. That was Oliver, and there was nothing Joe wanted to do about converting him. Oliver was as fine as he was. So what if he had respect for elders right in front of their faces? Oli was still Oli behind their backs when he didn't think God was watching. "Yeah, we're here for that stuff..." Oliver trailed off, his eyes slipping away to his hat in Joseph's hands. The boy tried to stifle his smile; it wouldn't be polite to the woman, especially right under her nose to mock her like Joe did. He admired his friend's bravery; but it wasn't something that Oliver would ever dream of doing. Even if she was just a secretary, Oliver suspected he could get in trouble.

Well, it seemed Robin had to resort to going to the office. In fact, he was right ahead of three other students who had just entered the office. He turned so that they could get their own schedules and maps and such, but ended up bumping into the one with dark hair. "Ah, sorry," spoke the redheaded boy. Robin hadn't quite hit puberty yet; his voice was soft and just a bit girly, and he was at least a head shorter than the boy he'd bumped into. All the new kid wanted to do was get out of the office and go to his class.
Melanie watched the boy bump into Oli. Despite looking rather feminine, she instantly could tell the kid's gender. Maybe he was the new kid? She hadn't seen him before. He was cute, but not the kind of guy Melanie would date. Well, the fact that he wasn't Oliver automatically made him the kind of guy she wouldn't date.

Oliver's dark blue eyes squinted shut in the shock from bumping into the stranger. Who wouldn't? It had been all so sudden in the first place- how had Oliver managed to not see him in the first place? As Oliver's eyes blinked open, and he recovered from the sudden bump, the boy addressed the other student. This kid was at least a head shorter then him... and his voice so light... Was it even a he? The highschooler took a double-take, staring down at the kid. Surely, this was the new student! Oliver hadn't seen this face before, those eyes, that hair among the hallways... Never before... Did they belong to a girl, or a boy? The red hair may have been short, but it was too pretty to belong to a boy. "Um, it's okay." awkwardly, the words were choked back out to the newcomer. What the hell? Why was there so many difficulties getting three words out to some new kid? Perhaps that it was just that he was new. That must have been it! Just the unfimilarites(sp?) of having somebody that he wasn't use to... Oliver decided to go with that. "Yo, you the newb here? So there is somebody else! You got your schedules? I'm sure that me and Mel and Oli here could show you to your classes! I'm Joe!" Joseph stuck Oliver's hat on top of his jacket's hood, tilting it slightly to the side. At once, he sprung forward to introduce himself to the new kid; anything to get himself out of the classes was a good thing. Besides... if he went around to show this redhead kid his classes, then Joe had the right to complain he hadn't gotten his class sheet... Heck, he didn't know his way around the building so well, but that would just advert him away from going to class longer! It was pure genius! The teachers couldn't fault him for showing a kid around, could they? It would get him out of this stuffy office faster, too... "Well, obviously your the newbie! I haven't seen you around ever!" Joe laughed again, leaning his arms back on Melanie and Oliver. "Don't scare him, Joe!" offered Oliver softly. There was no stopping Joe if he wanted to take them to show this guy around. At least he was taking Oliver and Melanie along with him.... Why did he want to go along? Why should Oliver even care what Joe was dragging him into? It was getting away from class, there was no doubt that was where Joseph was aiming for, ... but was that the responsible thing to do when there would be classes going on? How much work would they miss, how much would they need to make up? Was going around a school they didn't know with a kid they didn't know such a great idea? For some reason, Oliver didn't argue against Joe's idea. "Do you kids want your schedules, or what?" the elderly woman spoke, growing even more impacient(sp?). "Are you going to need hall passes now, too?" Already, the woman was reaching to the drawers in her desk to get the papers. "Names?"
