Definitely my favorite gothic group ever, as I've stated. Sentenced was formed in 1989 in Finland and are one of the bands largely responsible for establishing Finland as the gothic metal/rock capital of the world, and just putting the country on the map musically in general. Their first two albums were solid death metal, but following 1995's "Amok" and to a greater extent its follow-up in 1996, "Down," Sentenced switched to the gothic metal style they'd come to be known for. Four more albums followed "Down" until the group's amicable breakup in 2005 with a farewell album. Their trademark sound is characterized by extremely catchy but simple hard-rock melodies and choruses underneath (usually) solid metal music and Ville Laihiala's superb voice. Lyrically, the band is obsessed with death, loss, and despair, but they approach these subjects more often than not with a sense of humor, though they have almost as many serious, heartfelt pieces too. I hope you mean gothic as in gothic metal.
Their new stuff is hilarious (Excuse Me While I Kill Myself is pretty epic), older stuff is musically ******** jaw-dropping.

I meant it in the sense of both gothic rock and metal, because it's tough to tell with these guys sometimes.

the stuff of theirs i have seems to be very different genres... i've got amok, love and death and the cold white light. I prefer the cold white light album, no one there and aika multaa muistot are awesome songs, so pretty~ smile

I like Sentenced's older stuff, the newer is alright, listenable, but not that great. I saw them at their 2nd last gig ever, summer at Tuska Open Air Metal Festival 2005. Their stage show consisted of the band members carrying a coffin on stage and then going to their instruments while an intro is playing. Then after that Ville emerges from the coffin and the gig starts. After the last song he goes back in the coffin and is carried off stage. BTW, Ville's really hawt. ;D

I regret not having the chance to see them live before they split up. As I understand it, the band's done for good, no reunion shows or anything in the future.
Although Hollow probably won't appreciate me saying so, Ville's PoisonBlack struggles to sound much different than Sentenced, IMHO. I dunno if it's him or just the gothic genre in general that's to blame, though.
