Cecil Milner III

Cecil wasn't sure what to think. Here he was, sitting on a rock that's theoretically isn't supposed to exist, looking over a river that isn't really supposed to exist, coming from a town that isn't supposed to exist. At least, in Cecil's eyes. This kind of stuff was listed under fiction. Alternate Medevil dimensions, people growing tails... Hiding ears the size of satalite dishes underneath hats... Yes. All fiction. All stuff that was supposed to be kept in books, and bam, they're out and in your face. Wonderful.

Cecil made a silent sigh and watched the river flow down into the lake, lost in his confusion.

This wasn't supposed to be happening. Pointed ears, castles, old english, none of this was suppose to exist. Not when she was alive anyways. Evi wandered aimlessly, as she had these last... how long had it been anyways? Six months at least. A year? An eternity? Truly, time had not been kind to her mind or body. She had been living on the outskirts of the city since the Event. Meeting up with that pilot in the bar (tavern, she corrected herself), it was all just so wrong... She couldn't think strait, could barely form coherent thoughts, and yet, that day always remained crystal clear.

Lost in her own fragmented thoughts, she didn't notice the boy until she nearly ran up into him. She stiffened soundlessly, her pointed ears subconciously flattening, much like an anxious animal. Taking a careful step forward, she flinched when a twig snapped loudly under her shoe, praying that the sound could not be heard ringing over the loud rush of the river.

Snap!

Cecil's ears jumped from hiding at the sound of the twig, forcing him to grab hold of his hat before it went flying into the river. He looked back to see a woman, with ears just like his. Well, not exactly like his, but they were long, twittery and odd, and Cecil knew that someone else had gone through a bit of growing as well.

He waved to her as if there wasn't anything unusual. Her ears weren't anything unusual to him. If he wanted to gawk at things like that, he'd look in a mirror. If he could find one in this renisance era hell.

The man was odd. More off his rocker than she was, judging by the fact that he had just nonchalantly waved to her. Most people she knew would gawk. If not at her ears, than it would be her eyes. As the boy waved, she tried not to grimace in response. She wasn't social to begin with, and a half-year quarantine hadn't helped it much.

At the same time she was trying not to seem to antisocial, she sized the boy up. Younger than she was, for sure, if not by much. Judging by his clothes, another person from... 'her time'. And by the ears, someone who had contracted the same disease (or whatever it was) as she had. Come to think of it, what she wanted to say was something along the lines of, "What the hell are you staring at boy?" but instead, her mouth shortened it to a single, irritated, "What?"

Cecil got up and walked over to her. He took out his notebook a pen out of his bag on the way over. The young man got up close to the woman, and poked one of her ears. That's what he was looking at. Cecil took off his hat and poked one of his ears.

He scribbled something down in his notebook.

I guess we're in the same boat, huh? he showed the woman. Judging from her clothes and her accent, he assumed they were both from the same time-period-dimension-thing. He shrugged as if it weren't any big deal. Cecil mentally slapped himself, of course it was a big deal, it was just easier to fake calm when you couldn't speak.

Oh, so he wasn't weird. He was mute. Or both. Somehow though, in an unexplainable way, this revelation seemed to calm her frazzled nerves, rather than rile it further. She visible relaxed, her guard dropping and her expression turning to that of a slightly bemused person. Even when he poked her ears and pointed out his own, she managed to produce a wan smile. He seemed relatively harmless, if rather calm about this whole bizarre situation.

"Yeah, I guess we are." She responded, surprised at how calm her own voice was. "I'm Evangeline, by the way, arrived here August 30th, last year." she stuck out her hand, "And you are...?"

August? Cecil's bright gold eyes widened. How long has this multidimensional kidnapping been going on? He shook her hand quickly, than wrote down,

My name's Cecil Milner. I got here... I think last month. Januaury. Did you say August? The hopes of getting out of here were fading even faster now. If Evangeline had been here for half a year, then he was going to be stuck here for just as long- probably even longer. He was a little frightened by the prospect, but he kept his cool. He sat back down where he was before and beckoned Evi over to join him. There wasn't anything quite like being confused with other people.

"Yeah, August of last year. Almost September." She followed him, resting her elbows on her knees and her head on her hands. Without looking at him, she continued, "I met a pilot, maybe you've seen him? I don't know how many of us 'present day-ers' there are so...Alec, I think his name was. Or Alex, or something like that." Musing over what he had wrote her, she couldn't help but feel suppressed panic. He had been here only a month, and already he had mutated. She hadn't... changed until several weeks earlier. So far, she only knew Cecil and herself with this weird disease and from the villagers she had seen, from a distance of course, none of them seemed to have displayed any abnormalities.

"Cecil, have you... seen anyone else... like us?" It was difficult to get that sentence out, not because she had a speech impediment (no offense to the boy next to her) but because it just seemed kind of awkward.

Cecil nodded, and pointed to the town in the distance. He turned to Evi, it was apparent she was avoiding town like him, or she'd know of Blythe and himself. Along with all the others and their changes. He put his knees to his chest and watched the river, leaving silence in the air.

He picked up his notebook and wrote down, They're all in town. I think I know who you're talking about too. Last time I saw Alex, he grew a tail. Cecil raised an eyebrow, feeling a little awkward about writing it, the things you'd never see yourself saying...

While, given her own present state, the news shouldn't have been too shocking, Evi couldn't help but be slightly taken aback. She muttered,

"A tail, well what do you know." She shrugged uncomfortably. "So, how many would you say come from our, um, dimension?"

Cecil counted out with his fingers, looking in thought as he tried remembering the faces. He came out with Blythe, Alex, Karin, Jamie, that headband guy... That was everyone he met so far. He showed Evi a hand of five fingers and wrote down in his book, There's probably more somewhere, but that's who's staying at the inn right now. He skipped a space, indicating a change of subject, I hate this... I thought it was bad enough that we're stuck here, but now we have to deal with these mutations too? Nearly beat up a villager for calling me a "Monster" yesterday. I mean, yeah, sure, I got a tail, and ears, and some strange s**t going on, but I'm still human... Oh, sorry, ranting, going crazy. Cecil made a little goofy face and went back to watching the river.

If she was that kind of girl, Evi probably would have giggled at the boy's face. But, since she wasn't, she didn't, offering another smile instead.

"Well crazy isn't even really the problem here. There's also hygiene to think about. And stoning. By the villagers. Very important." Mentally, she winced. She was so bad at talking to other people. Her intent was to make a joke, but of course, she had to say it completely seriously. In attempt to balance that out, she made a mock-sour face, nearly as goofy as Cecil's.

You're really good at being sarcastic, aren't you? Cecil wrote and made a small smile. There was just something about talking to other people that made Cecil feel better- despite not having a voice and all. Whatever. It was better than staring at a river all day all alone.

Evi peered at the boy's writing, smiling slightly at the comment written. "I get that a lot, actually. Seems to me that sarcasm should be my middle name, as I eat, breath, and sleep it anyways."

She pause for a moment, thinking of what he had said - wrote she corrected herself - she asked, "So, you planning to hide out here forever than? Seeing you got stoned the other day, right?"

Cecil shrugged listlessly. He didn't really care about what the villagers thought of his "Condition" Okay, so there was that hunter he met before, but the man had caught him in the midst of a mid-species crisis- and the guy screaming "Monster" didn't help. Despite himself, he kept his features hidden snugly underneath his his clothing, nub tail and all.

He wrote something down and stood up.

I'm not stoned yet. I just find not being to talk to anyone with my notebook in the village unnerving. I hate peasents. Cecil began to walk, beckoning Evi with a wave of the hand.
