August 26, 2005Continued from The Beat Shop conversation:
Nairn lounged in an old overstuffed green velvet chair (that had probably been there since the 1920s) with his feet propped up on a box. He slouched a bit toward the lamp near the chair so he could read, not that he'd been able to really concentrate on the words. He'd always been rather fond of Anna. After all, she left him alone and didn't pester him, but seeing her now...he couldn't stop thinking about her. He refused to believe what the women were implying. A crush? Bah. He had no use for such things....right? He sighed a bit, slouching down more in the chair.
Anna paused at the doorway to the backroom, looking around at the place where she was born for the first time in months. She stepped in and said, "A little too dark to read in here, don't you think?"
Nairn glanced at the doorway, trying to act nonchalant. "I have a lamp right next to the chair." He rolled his eyes and went back to pretending to read again. "What did you need anyway? Come to heckle me some more?"

Anna was genuinely confused. "When did I ever heckle you?"

"Out there," Nairn grumbled, closing the book, but marking his place with his finger. "You and the owners laughing at me." He slouched more, if that was possible, sulking.

Anna laughed. "I think they were laughing at both of us, and they both seem to think they have good reason." She paused and then said pointedly, "Do they?"

"I stopped trying to figure Jynk out a long time ago," Nairn smirked. "I don't know your guardian well enough to make a decision on her." He studied Anna, tilting his head a bit. "You want to sit down?" He gestured to an old wingbacked chair next to his. The two chairs had been set in the corner on either side of the lamp, mismatched but still going well together.

Anna nodded and sat down on the chair. She looked at Nairn, considering him. He didn't seem concerned about diplomacy or tact; then again, neither was she. She had spent too much time on her own to know about tact anyway. She spoke her mind, nicely mind you, but still said what she thought. And so she did now, "Why were you avoiding looking at me earlier?"

Nairn was quiet a long moment, then shrugged. "I haven't seen you in awhile. I wasn't expecting you to look so.." He stopped himself before saying "pretty." Looking over at her, he licked his lips at little. "You look very grown-up now." He nodded. That would work. Yeah. Another nice save by the Master of Everything. Rock on.

Anna looked amused. "Glad to see you decided not to stay in Neverland forever, too."

"We all grow up sometime, Anna," Nairn answered, shifting in the chair to look at her better. "All them little rugrats out there, they'll grow up, too. Then there will be more kids." He shrugged, not really sure where he was going with all of this.

"And the cycle of life continues. When did you get to be so philosophical, Nairn?"

"I've been reading Plato lately," Nairn snorted. He sulked in his chair, tail twitching. "When did you get so damn curious about me?"

"I was born curious. Hasn't killed me yet, so I think I'll go on being curious. There's something you're not telling me. What is it?"

"Why do you think there's something I ain't said yet?" Nairn asked, looking at her. "You came back here after me, remember? Maybe you're the one hiding something, eh?"

"I'm not one for hiding. I came back here because I thought you were. Not to mention that the two of them out there teasing me was getting old." She remembered something, and held out her hand. She was holding two chocolate chip muffins. "I brought offerings."

"Muffins are a good way to start," Nairn chuckled, taking one. He picked at the wrapper, sticking his tongue out a bit in concentration. Once he got the wrapper off, he began picking the muffin apart, popping small bits in his mouth. "I only came back here for the quiet. I figured you girls wanted to chat without the bad, bad male in there. Or..well..male-minded." He sighed. "You're a good person. Thanks for the muffin."
