I was just curious what sorts of musical instruments everyone has used for spellcraft or ritual purposes. Music can often be an important element in magic, particularly Shamanic paths. Most of us probably also played some sort of musical instrument in school, though I hear that since my time they've started seriously cutting out the music curriculum in public schools (a travesty I tell you!!). Anyone been to a drum circle or some other sort of bardic group (participant or witness)?

The first thing that came to mind when I read the thread title was the band Muse. 3nodding
With me it's 90% unaccompanied singing. There are sometimes drums. I am very curious as to what you mean by bardic group. Care to elaborate? I have been in African style drum circles, but those were 100% social, no spiritual or magical over-/undertones whatsoever.

Hmm lets see what intstruments can I play:
Bugle Trombone Keyboard/piano (out of practice) Recorder Ocarina Bodhran Guitar (learning.....the resources for leftie guitarists is all but non-existant)
and the crazy thing is I can't read music.
I've been to a few drumming circles both mediational and healing these have been at the big halloween and beltane bashes in london every year.

Just my own voice. I can't play any instruments, so I don't own even a drum. Humming will do perfectly for me when I need some sort of music - but normally silence is the only music in my rituals.

Bardic group? I probably should have used different terms, but basically I meant any other sort of Neopagan-y music group that isn't just drums. Some more organized groups have bardic circles that are responsible for the music during rituals and such. Basically just Neopagan musician groups, though they might also incorporate elements of poetry.
I posted this topic up primarily because I was gifted with an Irish flute recently. I like this style of flute much better than the ones you usually see in bands. Easier to play than trying to hold it horizontally and blowing air across a hole rather than through the instrument.

I've used my flute, and I want to get involved with a drumming circle because I own a drum and maraccas. The first instrument I played was the drum. I've also started to use my own voice and chanting. For me Music is the language of my soul.
I really want to get a set of Pan pipes. I used them once before and I felt so wild and well free. Considering that Pan is one of the first deities I've worked with, it only seems fitting. I'm also really good at them! The drumming circle I was with that had them was like "OMG! That was awesome".
I've always used music. I'd like to learn the harp if only so I can play some "Celtic" music. It's beautiful and seems to relax me more than other forms of music. I have this CD of drumming and chants and it really energizes me. I might also buy some bongos...

If I had the money to buy it I would have done

Personally when it comes to music in ritual I either want really slow and relaxing, or I want really fast and ecstatic drum beats.

To the one that I serve I do remember one Imbolc I did a ritual to Pan and played my flute for a long time. I was naked and enjoying the ritual. There was a knock on my dorm door. I threw on my robe and was like "yeash?" It was too loud to late... redface I will give my all
