There have been some visions of the Underdark in the Forgotten Realms world that people have got wrong in the past. D&D players and those who read the Forgotten Realms books will know much more about what it is actually meant to be like than many others.

From what I have read about Drizzt Do'Urden, I have a fairly good idea about it myself. The kinds of creatures that exist down there can be very horrifying and menacing. Hook Horrors are one example.

The Underdark is said to be full of twisting and turning tunnels and huge caverns. The Drow city, Menzoberranzan, is located in one such area.

Here's a sketch of a part of the Underdark.

Hook Horrors... my girl Hadoriel fought one of those once... They suck.

Personally, I'm not particularly partial to the Underdark, but that mostly stems from my general dislike of boring ol' dungeon crawls that one often sees D&D GMs fall back on when they don't have actual story to present to the players. I do like Skullport and parts of Undermountain, though. The former because it's just an interesting place to have an adventure in and the latter mainly because of its connection to Waterdeep.

Call me crazy but those hook horrors don't look so terrifying or menacing from looking at a drawing. Maybe if someone could make one for a live action movie or something they could actually look scary enough but, a drawing? Come on! mrgreen
This is the first I hear of them btw...

They're meant to be terrifying. I don't think that picture is particularly scary either, but it's the best I could find. I always imagined Hook Horrors (from R. A. Salvatore's description of them) to look a bit like that creature we see in Castlevania Hypno. You know the one that appears in several of the games, but you fight it as a boss with the flying demon that shoots fireballs at you. It's the one with the pike in it's hands.

I thought of Hook Horrors being like that but white and a lot bigger and bulkier.

The dude on the ground.

The Underdark is interesting, though I don't really see any reason that creatures underground would be necessarily any more evil and/or horrifying than creatures on the surface. In D&D game mechanics the more dangerous qualities of the underdark may simply come from the fact that it is a place that humans and other surface races are not adapted to and are thus out of element and at a disadvantge. If we were all drow this topic might be about the bright and horrible surface world and the terrible monsters that dwell there.

And the Hook Horror picture reminds me of the vulture headed villains from Jim Henson's The Dark Crystal. What a great movie.

I've not seen that film in YEARS! I must see it again at some point.

I know what you mean SK, but as it's a dark and foreboding place it fits into this subforum perfectly and it can be discussed as an area of "dark fantasy". In the long run, the drow aren't exactly a nice race of people. There are a couple of exceptions, Drizzt being one, but on the whole the drow are wicked and so is their Spider Queen, Lolth.

Yeah, I guess yer right but I couldn't picture something as terrifying. And I figured the picture was the only one you were able to find but... rolleyes
So those demons are meant to look like Slogra from CV then? Can you believe I still remember their names? The other one is called Gaibon, btw, he-he.
That fight you posted a pic of is quite cool cuz it's the first boss fight in CV and it's rather easy. 3nodding

I feel a bit weird that I didn't quite catch that "Drow" thing SK was talking about at first. I guess I ain't very informed in those matters but, I finally got it after a while (obviously before finishing up this post, he-he). sweatdrop

I remember the names now! redface
I'd just forgotten before and couldn't be bothered to look them up.

Yeah, in the Dark Elf trilogy they're described in such a way that made me think of a creature that looks not unlike Slogra, but bigger, stronger and I actually imagined them being white/ivory. They are described as having a large exoskeleton and being somewhat bird-like in the face.

The rendering of the hook horror in the Drizzt comics isn't really the best, but of course, neither is most of the artwork in the Drizzt comics. It's all very cartoonish and it's just so hard to take it seriously. Wizards of the Coast kinda churned them out to get money while they waited for Salvatore to churn out yet another Drizzt book.

Here's a pic of the hook horror from the D&D Monster Manual

And here's a photo of the figure from the miniatures game

I'm glad I was able to assist you with the name Mel. I just can't forget stuff like that, especially when it comes to CV. mrgreen

It's a good thing Berz brought us some pics, eh?

Hey Berz! Those are some cool pictures. I like the miniature figurine's better though, he-he.

From what Salvatore described though, my imagery will remain as a larger, white, bulkier version of Slogra from Castlevania I'm afraid.

You know Mel, you should really learn to control that fear, he-he. Get it? rofl

Seriously now, I wish I could see some kind of, umm, what's it called? Oh yeah, animatronic version of the monster in real life so I could tell if they're scary enough or what. Wouldn't that be cool to see? Well, maybe not in a dark alley mind you, he-he. sweatdrop

Where are we going with this? whee
I'm getting rather confused now.

Oh yeah, the Underdark. Really dark, creepy underground cavernous kind of place. There are also "acid pits" in there. Just wondering about the logistics of that.
