So, after seeing some awesome recovery in Yellowstone, the US Fish and Wildlife Service decided as of Thursday, Feb. 21 2008 to remove the gray wolf from the list of endangered species, thereby stripping it of its previous protections from the Endangered Species Act. The plan would be effective starting March 2008.
And while we certainly do not want to list every single species for the protections of the ESA, I personally don't think wolves are ready to return to being hunted and killed. Wyoming and, especially, Idaho have openly expressed their desires to hunt and kill nearly all wolves in their states.
"Idaho's governor publicly announced his intention to kill more than 80% of the state's wolves, and the state has already begun planning large scale wolf eradication efforts through hunting and aerial gunning.
"Wyoming's wolf management plan would allow 16 of the existing 23 packs of the wolves in the state to be killed on sight. To accomplish this goal, the state would authorize poisoning, trapping and shooting within 90 percent of the wolf's current home range outside of the national parks." -Defenders of Wildlife

I think that yes, wolves are ready to be delisted...but obviously the "[US Fish and Wildlife] Service-approved" state plans would be heavily damaging to the gray wolf. ID and WY need to improve their plans. They're known for their constant attempts to legalize wolf killing. It's time we change that.

I agree completely. What I don't get is how they can justify the eradication of a keystone species. Why do they want to kill 80% that makes no sense to me at all plus bush has put his 2 cents in on this issue and is on the side of shoot on site.

I know that this thread started months ago and things probably have changed since then, but that's still terrible! I haven't heard of this before. Only twenty-three packs of wolves in the entire state, and only seven after hunters are done?! Why are they so determined to kill them all?!! gonk

It is sad. Some people really seem to hate wolves for some reason. They're my favorite animal. When I lived in the country I loved listening to the pack that lived in the woods on my moms land. their howls at night was like soothing music for me not something to be feared. People can just be dumb sometimes.

And, according to my sister, this has already happened by now and the wolves are in very few numbers.

NO! Not the wolves! All life has value, all of it...why do they want to legalize this stuff? It's just ridiculous how people think in some situations, especially this one.
