This can mean only one thing...Commissions!
Yes, it's true. People are actually paying me to do something I'm already totally obsessed with and spending all my time on for free. It totally blows my mind. Some of the officers' wives here on base have seen the scarf I made for my mother (she brags) and the scarf I made for myself. Apparently they liked them. Mrs. J wants me to make her a super-funky scarf to match her new coat. Mrs. D brought me three different top patterns that she wants me to make for her daughter (who wears a size 0!!) Of course this also means that I'm going to get way behind on my own projects, but...Yarn Money!!!
So my fellow fiber-fiends, have you ever been offered money for indugling in your addiction?! Is this madness, Sparta, or just awesome?

i wish! Though to be honest I'm not the most reliable on finishing crafty things. I usually only finish things if they're easy/fast/for myself.

Preferably all three!! rofl

I have quite a few times.

and I plan to get a permit to sell at our local famer's market.

Hopefully people will buy >.<

I need to make stuff I actually want to sell though.

Cause I end up keeping all my stuff! (LOL)

I have a queue of like, seven people at work waiting for scarves that they're commissioning me for... It's actually pretty fun, cause they pay for the yarn, and I don't end up with 34946449576 FO's that I can't use xd

I had a friend ask me to make him a flame scarf, but he was the only one who ever actually paid me for my work. Usually I'd have people ask me to make them something, and then I'd get halfway done and they'd change their minds.

Yes.
My boyfriend's mom asks me if I want money for the little stuffed animals I make her kids. I say no because those are gifts that I enjoy making. Plus I know her very well. I can only sell to strangers.

A few of my mothers friends want me to make them a few things. A hat, a scarf. I just don't know how much to charge for it!

Now that is my biggest conundrum. I have no idea what to charge! Obviously I want to factor in the price of the yarn, but beyond that I can't think what might be reasonable. I mean there's time and then there's degree of difficulty, but it doesn't mean that I know what kind of price tag to put on it. ><
Oh I'm just confuzzled. It was like when I first started babysitting (wow, it's been like a decade 0.0) and people asked me to name my own price.

I believe I read somewhere that you're supposed to figure out how much work you can get done in an hour of non-stop crafting and make sure you pay yourself minimum wage plus cost of materials plus costs related to selling like table fees and transportation. I didn't see the point in all that math because I was a stay-at-home mom selling crafts to make money for more supplies. I calculated my cost to make the item and multiplied it by 3. I can't remember why I chose the number 3 to multiply by though.

That is the exact forumula that my mom does. It is the most popular one that I've heard of. It pays for the suppies you did - letting you buy them again. And it adds in some money for your time and effort. If you charge much more than that (unless it was really cheep supplies with a very complicated and time consuming project) then people won't buy it. If you charge less then you're not not really getting paid for your time and you can burn out very quickly.

Actually the other day I was knitting a fun fur scarf. ( I needed something mindless to do) I gave it to my friends in home care nurse. (I am used to making things for others and not getting anything in return.) She was so flattered she offered to pay for it. I tried to refuse. It didn't work. So I agreed to 1 or 2 dollars. SHe paid me 10! How awesome is that? (lunch money for work!)

I don't take commissions on my knitting just because I know I can't guarantee to get the item finished in a certain amount of time. My own projects take me forever, and I don't want to keep someone who is paying waiting for their stuff.

I am, however, not opposed to being commissioned for spinning or dyeing. Spinning projects are pretty quick for me, with the exception of fingering weight and smaller yarns. And dyeing takes no time at all, really, other than the time it takes for items to dry. It would take longer for me to receive the materials than it would for me to actually produce them. xp

Oyy, don't tell me that. Next thing you know I'll be commissioning you ALL THE TIME. Your stuff is really pretty, by the way.
