ARG! I had some strange cases of gradually (small but noticeable changes over a month or two) shrinking fins in a couple of my bettas, so I had the bright idea of waltzing into the pet store and buying MELAFIX. That would be a kind of herbal-y medicine that I think comes from some teatree extract... I don't have the bottle on me at the moment. Anyway, I used it for 2 treatments on my little Styx, and noticed no sign of fin regrowth (if she even has finrot? I'm even still unsure but there are signs). She has been however repeatedly shedding her slime coat, which was strange. The other one I was treating just got even more scared and angry than usual.
Anyway, I was on ultimatebettas and I saw a link explaining that fish like bettas, with the labyrinth organ, are actually harmed by this treatment. Apparently it puts stress on their breathing and it is an irritant. Some bettas can be killed instantly by it, some you won't notice any changes in, but I'm going to stop using it on them forever. I guess I'll just try good old fashioned aquarium salt...
Does anyone else know about this? I didn't see any warnings about it on the bottle. Apparently even bettafix isn't good.
