Crosshaven General Hospital

User Image

For the past year, the west wing of the hospital has been under construction. It is the last wing that is in need of repairs and so the hospital has remained open, taking in as many patients as possible, despite being under staffed and overcrowded.

A silent form, unidentified, lays in one of the hospital's coma wards. Day in and out, the nurses come and tend him, and there are no signs of consciousness, though brain activity persists.

It is getting to the point where his breathing is starting to pick up, as is his heartrate and response to stimulus, but even if he were to wake up, what sort of heartbreak and loss would he be waking up to?

All he has right now are dreams, of running through the grass outside of town, keeping watch in the poverty-stricken areas, and working at the radio station. Such pleasant, distant memories.

((I hope I'm not intruding on anything!))

She had been transfered to the coma ward a few weeks ago due to her "Inability to shut the hell up" as Doctor Levy had so eloquently put it. At first she was upset and a little insulted by what was obviously his idea of a joke, but she realized she didn't mind it so much. The patients were good listeners, and she had a lot to say.

She walked through the rows of beds, picking up their clipboards, marking down their readings as she checked their heart rates and monitors.

She was the only nurse in the coma ward at the moment, as Jenny was currently on her lunch break. As she reached the one unidentified coma patient whom she had dubbed Oliver she checked his heart rate, his eyes for dilation, and examined his charts. Once she had finished, she sat the chart down, and checked his eyes once again, shining her little flashlight into them briefly, she gave a small smile, "Are you trying to come back to us Ollie?"

She wanted to show Jenny his readings, but she still had fifteen more minutes to go. She shrugged her shoulders, "Well, I guess we will have to wait. How about a shave?" She walked over to the sink and grabbed a bottle of shaving cream, a bowl of warm water and a razor. Once she returned to his bed she spread the cream across his right cheek and began to shave him, "So I had my first meeting with that therapist I talked to you about, between you and I, he's cracked out of his mind but I guess I'll give him a try, what do you think?" *Silence* "Yeah your right, it's worth a shot."

(( Not bothering me a bit! Welcome to the thread. ))

He just lays there, his mouth slightly open, cracked a bit, though they have been giving him plenty of fluids.

An attentive eye, however, will catch a faint movement of his hand. He trails it from the side of him to his stomach. It is probably just a reflex, patients like him have them all the time.

She has had trouble keeping this one clean... he seems to always smell like chemicals, even though he isn't on any unnecessary medication. Sometimes he appears to cry dark fluid, and his tears smell faintly like medicine.

Then right as she is speaking to him, in the calm and silence one would expect from the comatose, his heart rate spikes, and starts to fluctuate. His hands open and close, grasping at the bed sheets.

((Thanks!!))

"I'm not sure if the therapy is going to work for me though, I've never been very good with accepting other people's advice, no matter how much experience they have had..." she finishes up his left cheek finally and smiles, "There we go, much..." she hadn't noticed the hand moving across his stomach, but she certainly has become aware of his heart rate spiking up, and she jumps out of her seat when his hands start to grasp for the sheets.

"Ollie...er...sir?!" She fumbles with the phone next to her, paging Jenny as quickly as she could, and turns back to him, checking his eyes, his heart, and his brain waves which all seem to be spiking at the same time. She knows that any medication that they could give would do little to nothing for him, no one knows the real reason why, and so she leans over him, "Sir you are ok, everything is fine!" Her voice somehow manages to stay calm and steady, she isn't sure if he can even hear her but she tries none the less. Come on Jenny, where are you?

His back arches and his eyes roll open, catching a bit of blurred light. He hears a woman's voice, and for some reason it sounds familiar. He tries to speak, but all that comes out is a mumble and a moan.

For some reason, other workers in the hospital are taking a long time in getting here.

He grasps at her arm, and keeps making soft sounds, trying to speak, trying to focus. His eyes roll frantically in his head as though he cannot see anything yet, when in truth he can't tell what is real here from what he has been dreaming.

Then they fix on her face, and blink a few times. The charts and graphs on the machines around him show that he is displaying full brain activity. His heart rate starts to level off at a normal rate, as though he is starting to relax.

He forms words slowly, and oddly he doesn't ask where he is, or what happened, he asks "Am I safe?"

"How long has he been like this?" A tall woman with brown hair and a few wrinkles has arrived, along with Jonas, one of the orderlies. It's all they can ask for when the hospital is so under staffed these days.

When the man's back arches and his eyes roll, Jonas grabs his shoulders, holding him down to keep him from falling off the bed.

Gwen looks up and there is a rush of relief at the sight of the doctor, "Since I paged you," but her head snaps back down at his hand when she feels him grasp her arm.

A quiet "Oh god..." escapes her as she stops and looks back down at him, trying to find his focus once again. When he manages to fix his eyes on her, she remains still, knowing that too much movement would only scare him more than he already was.

She can hear the monitors start to slow back down, his heart rate beginning to steady, and when she hears him ask her if he is safe, she manages a small yet reassuring smile, "Yeah...you're safe, and you're going to be just fine." She checks the IV to be sure it hadn't been damaged and then looks back up at the doctor, who appeared to be at a loss for words.
