I don't have a sewing machine and don't know much about using one even, but I'd like to buy one someday. It may have to wait a while before I can buy one, though. I don't really have any place to put one in my small apartment.

Anyhow, yeah... I was wondering what features to look for and what brands to recommend and what to avoid. Any information yall can offer up on this would be much appreciated!

Since you're a beginner, you don't need anything fancy. Brother and Singer are the two brands I'm most familiar with although the one I have now is a Viking. It's very basic, but it get's the job done. I sewed two quilts for my little girls for Christmas on it. Look at second hand stores. They often have nice machines for very cheap prices. Mine is a handme down from my mother who got herself a much nicer machine. If I were you, I'd look into taking a basic class at the community center or a local craft and fabric store or find someone who has a machine that they will let you do a few simple projects on (try a basic block quilt, save clothes for later). Then you can get a feel for what you like or don't like about a particular machine. Have fun!

Awesome advice, thanks! I hadn't even thought of searching any second-hand stores for one. My mother used to have a sewing machine when I was younger, but she threw it in the garbage several years ago for some reason... maybe it stopped working? I don't really remember.

If it had a problem they are sometimes cheaper to buy than repair depending on the model and how old it was. For most sewing projects though I really perfer to use a surger. The problem is they are way more expensive and you usually can't find them as easily. Plus they take 4Xs the thread to run, but they leave a nice finished edge everytime and it's a lot harder to miss the an edge with a surger. Good luck on the sewing!!
