SHOOTING SKARS
By Jenna Jones

CHAPTER 1

I ran as fast as I could. Though I was finaly away from that place, that horrible place. And though no one even noticed of my dissapearence, I still felt like I was being chased. I didn't feel free at all. So I kept running, down the dark street, through the pouring rain. Not to any particular place, just anywhere. As long as it wasn't there.

I was surprized, I didn't know I could run this fast. My heart was racing, my head was throbing, my lungs were suffocating, and my eyes were bleeding bitter warm water down my cheeks. My long wet dark hair blocked my vision. The cars passing by as I ran down the street littered my clothes with the filthy street's water. Regardless, I carried on.

As I reached the edge of the city, and green began to slowly take over the landscape, I took a sharp turn and dove under a well-branched tree, just as the sound of thunder crashed.

I could hardly catch my breathe. Soaked, and freezing cold, I pulled myself to my feet, and leaned my back against the tree that protected me from the heartless storm. I exhauled, and was able to regain my breath.

That's when I saw him.

No more then ten feet infront of me there I saw a shadowy figure. Staring at me unphased by the rain. A thick helmet, like that of a motorcyle-rider's covered his face. He made a step forward and in fear my knees locked and I fell to my butt, not taking my eyes off the mystrey-person. He started coming closer to me, and I froze as a deer to headlights. He made a movement with his hand, and I held up my forearms in defense.

But he wasn't trying to harm me. He held his hand out to me, implying for me to grab ahold of it. But I refused. I didn't know of his intentions, and I was just praying for him to dissapear. For me to dissapear, for everything to end.

But everything stayed the same. I opened my eye's just enough to see the figure still hovering over me.

"Please, hurry," an echoeing voice pleaded. Not from this person, but from all around me, echoeing inside my head "It is okay, be quick now." it explained "You are going to be okay now." with those words I imediatly clutched to this person for protection. They didn't seem too shocked with my actions, and put a gentle hand upon my head. "You don't have to worry anymore."

And with that I guess I must have passed out right then. Because before I knew it I was waking up.

I opened my eyes, suddenly facing towards a bright light. I felt warm, and safe. I rubbed my eyes as I sat up, and observed my surroundings.

"Ah! You're awake!" a woman said blissfully. The lady seemed to be in her early twenties sitting at a small desk to the right of my hospital-like bed. Her desk was completley covered in unorganized papers, and files, I figured she had been there for quite a while. "How are you feeling?" she asked in a concerned manner.

"Um, I feel.. fine.." I answered surprized with my content condition, oppose to how myserable I felt not long ago.

The scars, and bruises that previously covered my body were gone. My hair was no longer a mess, but now soft and smooth. In fact, it felt lighter too. Was I dead?

"I'm so glad!" she said smiling kindly. "Mr. Tunee, please come in now, sir." she called facing towards a nearby door.

The door suddenly opened, he was obiously standing right outside. A boy entered the room, slightly cautious it seemed. He didn't look too much older then I was, he couldn't have been any older then seventeen, and he wore a black uniform. He stared at me curiously, but smiled politley. "Is she fully recovered, Lili?" he asked turning towards the woman.

"Yes!" bliss still floated in her tone "She was damaged more then we thought, but with the assisstance of her will, we were able to bring her back to a safe condition."

The boy glanced over at me again and then back to Lili "But isn't she.. a little old to be a Skar?"

Lili looked back over at me, "Mmm-possibly." she explained "But we can't know for sure yet. We'll have to have the Captain make the decission."

The boy nodded, and looked over at me once again "What is your name?" he asked "And you're age?"

"M-my name is Reilu.." I answered, "And I'm.. fifteen.."

"Fifteen? Really?" he asked staring at me a little closer. "You looked a little younger then that." he explained "I was aiming for thirteen."

I couldn't tell if that was a comment... or an insult..

"In any matter," the boy continued "my name is Quez Tunee." he introduced "And I'm seventeen years old." he turned over to Lili "And this-"

The woman literally jumped out of her seat and stood in a bow "My name is Lili Myra. And I'm twentie three years old and completly single." Was that last bit of information even realivent?

"Are you proud of that?" Quez asked, straring at her oddly.

"It means I still have my whole life ahead of me!" she said standing up straight, and proudly.

I got so distracted by the two I completley forgot I didn't even have an idea of were I was. "U-um, excuse me, but where am I exactly, and how'd I get here?" I had so many questions to ask.

Lili sat back down and displayed her kind smile once again "We had been observing you for quite some time." she explained "While you were in your home, we were about to continue on elsewhere, but then when you made that bold move to run away," she countinued "We knew it was about time we came to save you."

Save? "That's right!" I remembered "The person I met in the woods who was that?" I asked. I turned towards Quez, but he shook his head, as if reading my thoughts.

"We were going to wait a little longer to have him finaly meet you, but I suppose we can't make the little brat wait any longer.."

"Tunee!" Lili scolded "Use more respect when speaking of the Captain!'

"God, I was just kidding," Quez sighed putting his hands into his pockets. "Besides he's not my Captain anyway."

The door slowly opened again. A young boy, certainly only about half my age peeked through. He was wearing a white uniform that was identical to Quez's. He had odd obviously unatural light blue hair, and dark silvery-blue eyes. His god-like innocence made him look almost inhuman. And that wasn't the only thing that startled me about him. He stared at me a moment longer then smiled a heart-warming smile. "She is recovered already right?" he asked, it wasn't what he said, but his voice, it was that same voice I heard within the forest.

This young boy.. was the same as the person who saved me?

He stepped up to the side of my bed and held his tiny hand out in aquointance "My name is Ruk." he introduced. "And you are..?"

I was still in a state of shock but I took his hand and replyed "My name is.. Reilu.."

The boy laughed slighty "Our name's are a bit alike." he seemed humored by that.

"T-that they are.." his smile seemed to give me one myself.

"So?" Quez asked staring at Ruk "What are we-"

"Can I show her around the base?" Ruk asked turning to Lili.

"Of corse you can." Lili said smiling "You can walk, right Reilu?"

"I think so.." I mumbled sliding my legs to the side of the bed and standing up. I nodded.

"Great!" Ruk laughed letting go of my hand and running over to the door. "Come on!" he urged enthusiastically.

Everything was happening far too fast.

CHAPTER 2

We existed the room, and the hallway outside look like that of a schools. There were many doors on both sides of the wide hallway, and they're were other people walking up and down the halls and into the rooms as well. Some seemed like middle-school level, some high-school, even ones about as tiny as Ruk who must have been elementary. Depending on their age they all had different uniforms as well. It must have been a private school for all ages, is what I assumed.

"Um, Ru-"

"Isn't it big?" Ruk interupted as he glanced towards me, smiling again.

I nodded slowly. "Much bigger then my school."

"Skoo?"

"Huh? Do you-"

"Captain." a boy slightly younger then me said suddenly appearing infront of Ruk said sternly. Suddenly the serious look on his face shifted into a smile, and he bowed, saying "Good day, captain."

Ruk smiled back. "Good day, Lan." he said reaching up and patting the boy on the head. "How're the Rabbie's doing?"

"They're doing just fine!" the boy, Lan answered, enthusiastically. "but it was thanks to the Skars help that they're okay now."

Ruk seemed proud of himself "We were all happy to help."

"Yes." Lan said bowing again. "See you around, captain." he said suddenly hurrying down the hall.

"Captain?" I asked staring down at Ruk.

Ruk stared up at me confusedly, and blinked. He thought for a moment. "Oh!" he said holding a finger up.

"Yes?"

"Do you have any siblings?"

I shook my head.

Ruk nodded "I didn't think so."

We started walking down the hall again, until I could see a door much larger then all of the other ones. I assummed that was our destination, seeing he was looking towards it as well. When we got up to it, he went to grab the handle of the door when suddenly an alarm went off.

"Ahh!" I cried covering my ears and falling to me knees, shocked by the random noise.

The care-free look on Ruk's face suddenly vanished as a serious one took it's place.

"Skars, to the main gate." a woman's voice said over the intercom "Skars, to the main gate." she repeated.

"Reilu, come with me." he said suddenly. "Quicky." he said holding his hand out to me. I stared at his hand for a moment, then took it and got to my feet.

Ruk started walking down the hall at a hasty pace, as I followed after. He rolled up his sleeve and spoke into a watch-like device "Tahna, situation."

"The Blues have returned again!" a young girl's voice cried.

"Blues?" Ruk asked "What could they want?" he lowered his arm. All of the gentleness in his voice had faded.

We got to another larger door that automatically opened as Ruk walked up to it.

The room it revealed was huge. There were people allied in the center area on computers, all with worried looks on their faces. By looking at the edge of the room, I could tell where I really was.

CHAPTER 3

A wall of large glass windows revealed the outside. Black sky, glimmering stars. This wasn't a school. This was a ship. In space. More questions began to whelm up inside of me.

I followed Ruk over to the glass walls. He gazed out and in the distance I could see other ships approaching the one we were in. Blue ships.

Ruk turned around, and in response so did I. Their to find a whole group of young children, all no older then me for sure. They all were wearing the same uniform as Ruk's, and had the same bit of fire in each of their sets' of eyes.

With Ruk's nod, they all seperated, and each ran off to one of the small cockpit like areas that circled the room.

Ruk headed to one too, so I unknowing what to do, followed him. A round bubble-like space that emerged from the side of the ship, that was completley made out of metal. Ruk hopped down into it.

And I just stared at him confusedly.

He stared back at me for a moment, as if proccessing in his mind what to do with me. He grabbed my hand, and pulled me in as well. Suddenly a wall came down, closing the area between the ship, and our area off.

Suddenly it began to shake, and once again I fell to my butt. I closed my eyes tightly, as if sensing something had gone terribly wrong. The other ships have attacked us. I thought. But no. The shaking was gone, and now I could feel a slow gentle movement. I opened my eyes, not to see metal around us, but stars. The walls had dissapeared, and only the platform I sat on was visible. But I could still breath. Why?

"The walls are still there." Ruk explained, sensing my confusion. He turned towards me, and his smile returned. "This just is a lot better, huh?"

"I'm scared." I was nervous to admit it, but I was. I was scared. I wished I had stayed back on the ship instead of being so foolish as to follow Ruk over here, and I'm probaly just getting in the way too..

"It's okay." Ruk comforted. "Don't worry, you're okay as long as you're with me." he said with a nod.

It was also scary how such a young child could speak with so much confidence in his self. But I had no choice but to trust him.

"Captain," a girl slightly older then him said suddenly standing beside him. She was obviously in a ship of her own.

"We have no use for anymore warnings." Ruk explained. "We'll have to attack."

Suddenly a screen appeared infront of each Ruk and the girl with a woman's face on it. "Skars," she annoucend. They must have been waiting for her to give the word "GO."

Our ship and the other's girl's both started to drift apart, and I could see the other children, as well as Ruk all aligning in a row infront of the ship we were in previously.

The enemy ship's were approaching faster. All of the children each put their hand in fist over their heart. And suddenly all eyes turned to Ruk. "From the base of our hearts.." Ruk muttered under his breath. A smaller screen appeared infront of him, with a bar on it that slowly started to increase more and more. "We will fight!" he cried throwing his fist out infront of him, in unison with the others. Each ship fired a beam that directly hit the opposing ships. They hit and the other ships started to crumble apart with the blasts.

A moment passed by, and soon the ships started retreating. Why was it so easy? And what... happened? All they did was chant some hero-type words.. and..

Ruk stood tall with his hands pressed against his sides, with the same serious look as earlier pasted upon his face.

A screen reappeared infront of him, not with the woman's face but of a child's. A little girl, even younger then Ruk.

Ruk suddenly lit up with excitment. "Princess!" he cried.

"Skars." she annouced in a cute but straight-forward voice "We have sent them back once again. But likewise, they will return. Not so much as a threat but as a battle, I'm sure." she explained. "But in any matter." she paused, "Good job, all of you. Things are settled for now, and you may return to base." she explained as the screen dissapeared.

Ruk sighed, dissapointed for some reason. He seemed to just now remember of my existance and looked down at me, who still was incapable of standing. "Isn't it pretty?" he asked.

"What?"

He took a step back and spread his arms out. The stars glitered in the distance, it took me up till now to notice the beauty of it all. The darkness lightened up by kind little sparkles. It was.. beautiful. I smiled and nodded in anwer "It is."

Ruk chuckled and suddenly the ship spun around towards the ship we had came from. He took my hand and helped me to my feet, once again, as I could see all of the other child-pilots returning as well.

I had so many questions to ask, I didn't even know what to say. But the ship was much bigger then I imagined it to be. Though I only got a front view of the outside, it was huge.

Our ship ported, conecting back in place to where it had oringinally launched from. The door opened and we both carefully stepped out. The bright lights that lite up the interior of the ships blinded me for a moment, just long enough for one of the little pilots to tackle me without my eyes giving me warning. The ten-year old girl pilot who had spoken to Ruk when we were outside, clung to me.

She stared up with me with glistening eyes, the happy look on her face made it seem as if we had met before. "Who are you?" she asked.

"I'm.. Reilu.."

The girl, still clung to me, spun around, so she could face towards Ruk. "Is she a new Skar?" she asked.

Ruk smiled. "She is fit to be."

The girl spun around me again, facing back towards me. "But.. she's a lot older then all of us."

Suddenly a hand came upon the girl's shoulder and pulled her back a step from me. It was Lan, one of the boys from earlier. He shook his head and mumbled "Cauna, Don't judge someone's heart by their age."

The girl, Cauna folded her arms behind her and apologized "Forgive me.."

Lan then led the little girl back to where the other children had already gathered.

"My goodness." a familiar voice sighed, seemingly irritated. "Not only here for even a few hours and already Ruk has gone and took you out into space." Quez said stepping up to me, and poking my forehead. "What do you think?"

"A-about what?"

"About this. About everything."

"I don't understand this... let alone everything.." I muttered as my voice grew quiet.

Quez laughed at my response. He looked over at Ruk who stood beside me. "You really didn't tell her anything did you?" he asked, still laughing.

Ruk shook his head. "The alarm.. went off right before I got the chance.." he explained.

"Well that's no good." Quez sighed."But even if you tried to explain it all to her.. doubts are she'd understand."

"Wha-what?" That was so cold..

"I guess I have no choice to explain everything to her myself." he sighed, burdened by my being it seemed.

"You really don't have to.." Ruk muttered. He didn't seem too trusting of Quez.

Quez gave a cold stare at Ruk, and flicked his forehead. "You're explaination wouldn't make any sense to an outsider."

"BUT.." Ruk huffed.

Quez held up his finger to silence him. "Now, where shall I start?"
