Koto was crying. Crying and shivering. It was only 40 degrees outside, and yet she was soaked up to her chest in the freezing water of the ocean.

She wasn't crying because the others had died. No, they were strangers, she didn't care about them. She was crying because she was terribly cold and alone, clinging to only a small board from the recked ship she had stowed away on. She was crying because if she died in the freezing winter ocean, she would die without finding her brother, and he wouldn't even know she was gone.

She let out a half-sob, half-yell. She could barely feel her toes. She shook not only from cold, but from fear. I don't want to die...I don't want to die...I don't want to die! She wasn't afraid of the legends of the sea monsters, she was afraid of dying all alone and cold, freezing to death in the middle of the sea. She hardly believed the legends of the sea monsters. Surely, it would be interesting if they were real, yet she could never fully put her belief behind them, always having doubts because of the lack of proof. It was funny, though, because even without any proof, and against all the odds, she still fully believed that her brother was still alive somewhere, even though it was over a year since she'd last seen him.

She sobbed again, remembering the time when she was separated from her brother. Scared and cold as she was, she was determined to stay alive. Her teeth chattering, she turned her tear-stained face to the gray sky. I don't want to die!

Koto, still sobbing, began to paddle her feet. It wouldn't get her anywhere, she knew, but she had to keep moving to keep alive. I'm not going to die, She told herself sternly.

Koto felt a large rumble underwater. She quieted herself momentarily to listen. She heard a strange song; like a whale's. But it couldn't be...it was much too loud. She glanced around; the water had changed pace, the waves a lot bigger now. "What?" She said aloud, clinging to the board more tightly now.

Suddenly, a large, serpent-like monster rose from the water, and Koto heard the high, whale-like song increase in volume. She cried out and looked at the huge monster towering above her. It was looking down at her. Koto's eyes widened. The legends were true... "Lyrciantha," She muttered, recognizing her from the stories and drawings.

As the monster heard her name uttered, she gave another long whale-tone and it began to click like a dolphin. Lowering her head towards Koto, the serpent-like entity blew a draft of warm salty air into Koto's face. She gave another whale-tone as she lifted her head to the sky.

Shocked and no longer crying, Koto suddenly understood. It wants me...? She knew what she must do. This monster could save her life. And she knew it wasn't going to hurt her. Reluctantly, Koto removed her right hand from the tight grip on the board. She could barely feel her fingers as she stretched them to the sky. Looking up at the monster once more, Koto filled her lungs with cold air and cried quietly, yet strongly, "From here on, to the end of life, you are mine, and I am yours."

Lyrciantha gave a joyful sounding, loud whale song, and clicking, lowered her large head to face Koto once more. Cautiously, Koto paddled forward and clambered up onto the serpent's head. Clinging to Lyrciantha, Koto managed to mutter, in a slightly faltering tone, jokingly, "We're partners now, huh?" Lyrciantha responded with a strand of clicks and raised her head once more.

Kata was laying on the piece of wood that once had been a part of his ship, drifting around. he looked up at the sky with a bored look and put his hands behind his head. he was waiting for a random ship to come close so he could sneak aboard and steal something to eat and something to drink. the sea he was floating on wasnt fresh enough to drink. he sighed again and sat up, looking around. no, no ships. "im going to die here." he sid with a sigh. though, he wasnt afraid of dieing. he though that everyone would die sometime. sooner or later.

Koto was almost thrown off into the frothing sea as Lyrciantha raised her head. She glanced down and almost cried out; they were high in the air, and even through the fog, she could see for miles. A bit disoriented, Koto crawled back slowly along the monster's head and took hold of the fin at the top of the base of her neck, stabilizing herself.

On the horizon she thought she could see something large, boat-sized. Another monster? Koto didn't know. In another direction, a little bit closer but still far away, she could see a small piece of wood. A raft? She continued to look around her. "Wow..." She muttered, looking out down at the ocean. The waves seemed tiny from up here.

as Kata looked around, he though he could see something big. like a sea monster. "huh?" he tried to see better, but the fog was to thick. "must be my imagination." he said with a sigh and laid down again.

Still slightly nervous about being the new master of a sea monster, Koto sighed. "Um...Lyrciantha?" She started quietly. The monster swiveled it's cloud-gray, nearly blue eyes up towards her. "Can you...I mean...please take me to...a rock? Can you find one? Do you understand what I'm sayi--ah!"

Lyrciantha had begun to move forward, letting out a high tone. She lowered her head until it splashed into the water, however she let the top half of her head and body above the moving sea. She began twisting her body gracefully, heading off into the distance. Koto tightened her hold, amazed.

Xain paced silently on a large boulder floating in the endless sea. He had been minding his own business and relaxing on a schooner he had just recently bought when the damn thing sprung a leak and flooded before he got the chance to seal the hole. "I hate today....oh well at least Ill have someone interesting to talk to if I don't die here." as he stood on his rock he noticed a large shape in the distance slightly obscured by the fog. At first he thought it was a ship only to realize it was a giant water snake sliding through the water. "Ok I have got to meet that thing."

As Koto and Lyrciantha sped along the sea, the salty flecks hitting the girl's face, Koto could not help but think to the legends of the 10 sea monsters. They were real. Real. And she was touching--no. Riding one of those monsters. She shook her head. It was a moment before she remembered something specific about the legends.

Lyrctan. Lyrciantha's brother. A tear came to Koto's eye as the comparison was made. "You...did you lose your brother too?" She questioned quietly, not even sure the monster had heard her over the roar of the sea. Evidently she had, though, because the serpent responded with a slow whale-tone. It almost sounded....sad? Koto shook back her own tears and placed her hand gently on Lyrciantha's neck. "I'm sorry..." They continued to speed along.

Xain noticed them even more as the got closer and even managed to spot Koto on the top of the beast. "What in gods name is that?" 'Lyrciantha....' That word was all he herd but he knew he heard it even if it was in his head. "Did I swallow alot of sea water and not realize it?" In response he heard what almost sounded like a whistling growl coming from behind him. He adjusted his glasses looking back but saw nothing. "Yup too much seawater." he then looked back forward watching them as the waves picked up from their wake.
